Students find conservation summer work
The Maitland Valley Conservation Author-
ity, W roxeter, is sponsoring an Experience
'85 Program employing 13 area students for
the ,ummer months.
The provincially funded, Experience '85
Program combines working and learning
e(xpertences for students in the area of
conservation and resource management.
Participants gain insight into the daily
operation and maintenance of the Maitland
Valley Conservation Authority through man-
ual, clerical and supervisory work exper-
iences.
Jeanne McDonald of Brussels commenced
her 15 -week -employment period with the
M V. C.A. on May 13, in the position of
E7rperience Program Co-ordinator.
Working out of the M.V.C.A. Administra-
tive Headquarters. in Wroxeter are: Lisa
Webster., Paul Robinson and Jeff Moore of
W Ingham; Tammy Sachs, Ustowel; Robert
. Gordon, Belgrave; Helen Morrison and Brett
Garniss of Wroxeter and Charlene Hen-
hoeffer, Gorrie. These students work under
the supervision of Raymond Gowdy, Field
Operations Superintendent, along with the
'permanent field staff of the M.V.C.A.
Vicki Pentland and Todd Finnie of
Goderich, David Lobb, Clinton -and Kelly
Markham of Lucknow will be working out of
Falls Reserve Conservation Area outside of
Benmiller.
W hat duties does the M.V.C. A. have lined
•up for these 13 enthusiastic students? The
crew will be actively involved in forestry
management at various plantations through-
out the watershed and conservation area
development and maintenance at any one of
the ten Conservation Areas owned by the
M.V.C.A. Streambank erosion control work
on public and private lands will also take up a
large part of their employment period.
The crew has already participated in an
orientation day to introduce them to Maitland
Valley Conservation Authority. The day
included films, speakers and of course. a
"mystery car tour" to familiarize partici-
pants with the land and projects of the
M.V.C,A.
A Red Cross Emergency First Aid
Course was held at the Wingham and District
Hospital to provide the students with a
working knowledge of how to deal with
emergency situations and to ensure a safe
summer for park patrons and themselves.
Since the formation of the Experience
Program in 1975 the Maitland Valley
Conservation Authority has employed well
over 150 students. This year's Experience
Program finishes August 16, 1985.
Finnegans meet at Lions Park
• .
On July 14 seventy members of the Fin-
nigan family met at the Seaforth Lions Park
for their 27th annual reunion. Grace by
Stuart Finnigan was followed by a delicious
smorgasbord dinner.
The business was conducted by President
Lloyd Finnigan who welcomed everyone. A
report of last year's activities was given by
Secretary Frances McKnight. Officers
elected for 1986 are; president, Stuart Fin-
nigan, Bramalea, Ont.; first vice-president,
Keith Finnigan, Dorchester, Ont. and
secretary -treasurer, Susan Kirby, Terra
Cotta, Ont. . •
An interesting article concerning an
honour bestowed on Gordon Kilpatrick, a
family member from Saskatoon, was read
by Lynn Finnigan. The,placing of a plaque
in the church on Amhedst Island honouring
Robert Finnigan, the first settler of the
family in Canada, will be presented in 1986.
Games were ably conducted by Susan Kir-
by and Kay Finnigan. Finnigan Trivial Pur-
suit winners were Nora, Marg and Cindy
Finnigan. Jeanette Edmunds, Bea Oke,
John Kirby, Bill Hitchcock, Ron and Kathy
McKnight, Keith, Melba, Kitchener and
Ethel Finnigan. In the potato race Doug and
Rob Mumford were the final winners. Win-
ners in the cookie -eating contest were Kathy,
McKnight and Roy and Jamie Finnigan.
The Finnigan Finale, led by Kay Finnigan
included a medley of Irish songs. Violet
Elgie read a humorous poem entitled "His
Single Hair."
The oldest member of the Finnigan Fami-
ly attending was Violet Elgie, Seaforth,
Florence Scriver, London was the oldest

COLiEEN (MALONEY) LAING, grand-
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bowman of
Stratfordgraduated with honors from the
Food Service Management program at
Centralia College. Colleen received three
awards, including recognition as top student
in her graduating class. She is currently
employed as a Food Service Supervisor with
Beaver Foods and is the daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Ray Maloney of RR 5 Seaforth, and the
wife of Allen Laing of Waterloo. '
EDW ARD W ILUSZ
Edward W ilusz, of the Kilbarchan Nursing
Home, died at the Seaforth Community
Hospital Wednesday. He was 86.
He was born in Charalhow, Poland, and .
predeceased by his wife, the former Emilia
Iipoweski.
He is survived by three daughters, Alice
Delaney and Bernice' Karlanchuk, both of
Manitoba, and Elizabeth Casselman, of
Petawawa. .
Friends were received at the W hitney-
Ribey Funeral Home. Mass of Christian
burial was held Saturday at St. James Roman
Catholic Church.
Cremation and burial took place in
Windsor Cemetery, Teuton. Manitoba.
M A BEL IRENE KILLO UGH'
Mabel Irene Killough, formerly of Exeter,
died at Huronview in Clinton on July 25. She
was 79.
The daughter of the late Joseph Killough
and the former Christianna McDowell, she
was predeceased by two sisters, Merrill
Kelley and Eva Killough.
She had served as a dietician with the
Canadian Army for 20 years, including
during World War II.
She is survived by her brother-in-law
William Kelley and nephew James Kelley,
both of Seaforth.
Friends were received at the W hitney-
Ribey Funeral Home, where services were
held Saturday, with the Rev. James VanSlyke
officiating.
Burial was at Dungannon Cemetery.
KENNETH ARNOLD JOHNSTON
An East W awanosh Township native,
Kenneth Arnold Johnston of Clinton. former-
ly of W ingham and Victoria B.C. died in
Clinton Public Hospital on July 27. He was
61.
Born on May 6. 1924, he was the son of
Gershom Nixon Johnston and the former Ella
Maude Elliott.
Mr. Johnston worked as a civil servant with
the Department of National Defense until
1980. In 1981 he started work as a sales
representative and designer with Royal
Homes in Wingham. a position he held until
1985•
He was a member of the Wesley -Willis
United Church in Clinton and a past elder and
Sunday School Superintendent. He was a
member of the Clinton Masonic Lodge No. 84
AF & AM and a member of the Clinton
Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star No.
266.
Mr. Johnston was active in the Boy Scouts
organization in Victoria B.C. and was a past
elder of Gordon United Church in Victoria.
He is survived by his wife, the former
Donna Van Camp. They married on June 4,
1949 at Trinity Anglican Church in Beigrave.
Also surviving are three children NM.
Gary (Marie)Blackof RR Clinton, Mrs. Ben
(Marilyn) Swartz of Chatham and Mrs.
Robert (Debra) Virkutis of London and six
grandchildren.
Surviving brothers and sisters are Mrs.
Stewart (Doneida) Smith of Kitchener, Mrs.
Charles (Ariel) Wood of RR3 Seaforth, Mrs.
Lois McMichael of Seaforth, Mrs. Edward
(June) Robinson of RR 2 Auburn, Mrs.
Clarence (Alice) Ritchie of Lucknow. James
of Ustowel and John of RR 2 St Pauls. He
was predeceased by two brothers Elliott and
William Johnston.
Funeral services were held on July 30 from
the Ball and Falconer Funeral Home in
Clinton. Rev. James Bechtel from W esley-
W illis United Church officiated interment
took place at the Clinton Cemetery.
Flower bearers were Russell Peterson of
Newmarket, Robert Wright of Stratford, Ian
Hulley of Clinton. Brian Greenaway of RR 3
W Ingham and Samuel Thompson of W Ing-
ham,
Pallbearers were nephews David Johnston
of RR 2 St. Pauls, Paul Johnston of
Woodstock, Douglas Smith of Kitchener,
Richard Wood of Seaforth, William Robinson
of RR 2 Auburn and Donald Ritchie of RR 1
Lucknow.
Ri'SSEU D. LEE
Russell D. Lee, of Thames Ave. Mitchell,
died last Tuesday. He was 46.
Born in McGillivray Twp Dec. 23, 1938, he
was the son of Harold and Maureen (Steeper)
Lee of RR 2, Ailsa Craig.
He was a truck driver with Lippert
Trucking of Crediton, and a member of the
Royal Canadian Legion Branch 128, Mitchell.
He is survived by his parents. wife Isabel
(Shannon) Schellenberger. whom he maned
March 3. 1978; son David Russell Lee of Ailsa
Craig, stepdaughter Dawn Lee Schellen-
berger, brother Douglas Lee of Ailsa Craig,
and three sisters - Mrs. Leon (Helen) De Potie
of London, Mrs. Glen (Marion) McElrea of
Kirkton and Mrs. Dave (Doreen) Pergel of St.
Josephs.
He was predeceased by his first wife, the
former Darlene Frayne. She died in 1969.
Friends were received at the Lockhart
Funeral Home in Mitchell on Thursday.
Funeral services were held Friday, officiated
by Rev. Donald Pletsch. with burial in the
Exeter cemetery.
