Having returned to the board office last week, it was closed while repairs were completed, Mr. Allan said the main cost has been lawyers' fees. Ms. Young was fired from her position as math teacher at South Huron District High School in Exeter last December 31 for repeatedly being absent from school. Her continual absences were marked by time spent in jail because she refused to identify herself to police officials. Recently the courts refused to overturn the school board's decision to suspend her without pay. Mr. Allan said it is his understanding all costs associated with this most recent judicial review have been awarded to the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation. The Huron school board, and thus the taxpayers, have had to pay for two days of Goderich lawyer Dan Murphy's time. Mr. Allan said the school board staff had spent time on the Young case but costs were not separated. "The external costs are below $5,000," said the director. Before being fired, Ms. Young was suspended without pay for 12, days in November of 1983. She filed a grievance with the Ontario Labor Relations Board which upheld the suspension without pay. In turn, she appealed that decision to the Ontario divisional court for a judicial review of that grievance decision. • Mr. Allan said significant costs could enter the picture if a board of reference was called by the ministry of education. Ms. Young filed for such a board when she was fired, but to date no response has been made by the ministry. Murray Cardiff home from Taiwan Murray Cardiff, MP for Huron -Bruce is coming home today (Wednesday) from a 15 -day trade mission to Taiwan. Mr. Cardiff and a fellow MP from Alberta, as well as civil servants are there to see about exporting Canadian goods to the eastern country. Perth's MP Harry Brightwell is sticking a little closer to home. He spent this past weekend at the Listowel fair on Friday night and later at the Lions' club youth camp at W ildwood. Provincially, Huron -Middlesex MPP Jack Riddell, agriculture minister for Ontario, is heading off, to St. John's, Newfoundland for the provincial -federal agriculture ministers' conference. Mr. Riddell left Sunday and is expected back this Friday. His counterpart to the north, Huron -Bruce MPP Murray Elston spent his weekend in the riding. On Saturday he was at his W ingham constituency office and on Sunday he was at the Bruce County picric. Mr. F3ston has spent the past two to three weeks in briefings for his new role as provincial health minister. Recent elections in District 22 of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federa- tion (Perth County) have resulted in Tom Barker, a teacher at Mitchell District High School, being named president. He takes over from John Hofstee of Listowel. Arabians to show The Ontario Lupus Association's London branch is holding its seventh annual benefit Arabian horse show at llderton fairgrounds on August 4. The show is put on in co-operation with area Arabian horse owners, and all proceeds go to aid lupus research in Ontario. In the past six years more than $35,000 has been raised. Lupus (short for systemic lupus erythema- tosus) is a chronic, life-long rheumatic disease which afflicts 75 out of every 100,000 people, and can cause damage through inflammation to any organ or part of the body. its cause is unknown and as yet there is no CUM. Firmed in 1979 under the auspices of The Arthritis Society, the London branch is a volunteer organization devoting its efforts to informing the public about this disease, and providing support for lupus sufferers and their families. The home show is the branch's only fund-raising effort. last year $8,000 was realized, largely through sponsorship of 44 classes of competition by area businesses, groups and individuals, and donation of entry fees to the cause by the horse owners. The branch has more than 50 members, half from London and the rest from surrounding communities. Show competition starts at 9:30 a.m. and admission to the public is free.
