A fire is built with paper and kindling and it flames up in a blaze. The blaze burns low and seems to be about to fizzle out. You blow on it, fan it, working hard to keep it going. Smoke may almost choke you at times. If the materials you started with are good, if you exert enough energy and are eager to keep it going, soon the logs are alight, burning brightly, full of fascinating qualities. So it is with marriage. It takes desire, and endeavor to keep it alive and in an interesting state of well-being. Cancer shuns no one. It invades the bodies of the young, adults and the old. It strikes the poor, the wealthy, the powerful in high places, as it did 74 -year-old President Ronald Reagan of the United States. No matter what one's personal opinion of the man, sympathy is felt .as it is for anyone stricken with this dreaded disease. Specialists say he has a good chance of not having a recurrence of cancer. May they be right. The dark, threatening Monday brought nothing to us here but some rain and blustery winds. No flooded basements, no damage. It was a different story in the east end of Kitchener where people found their furniture floating in 100 mm of water in flooded basement rooms. Several roads were closed after being washed out. The downpour was part of an intensive thunderstorm that hit southwestern Ontario. How lucky we have been so far in this area. No tornado damage, no flooding, no vicious storms this year. Yet we grumble about our weather -- too cold -- too hot -- too dry -- too much rain -- too windy. How about appreciating the beautiful, warm, sunny days with refreshing breezes, the bounty of flourishing productive gardens we have already enjoyed. Not too much to complain of is there? Who among us has not engaged in so-called "friendly" gossip? What harm is there in a little gossip among friends? The harm is that gossip is insidious. In being repeated, that little of truth invariably becomes "improved" (added to), distorted into outright lies and sneers, nasty, cruel, hurting those gossiped about. It is well to keep a curb on our tongue when gossip is flying around. If we cannot speak kindly of someone we should keep our tongue still. The Toronto Argos goofed and lost the CFL Saturday game to Winnipeg Blue Bombers by one point, 28-27. (Continued on page B5) Cranbrook couple back from UK Cranbrook Correspondent MRS.
