Confusion reigns There was some confusion at a meeting of the Perth County board of education when a relatively new Listowel trustee (he has served since last fall as replacement for former trustee Rev. John Anderson) said he wanted to "register my disappointment and dis- approval". Bert Johnson said he was disappointed in the way he has been notified of possible conflict of interest charges. Mr. Johnson is part owner of Johnson- Dadson Insurance Brokers of Listowel. The firm also deals with real estate. The Listowel businessman said director of education Paul Sherratt spoke to him regarding a possible conflict of interest in the sale of land for$1 from the school board to the Listowel and District Association for the Mentally Retarded. Mr. Johnson duly declared a conflict of interest when this was discussed at board meetings and left the room. A later possible conflcit, of interest arose when the school board was discussing its insurance premium. Again, Mr. Johnson declared a conflict of interest and left the room. However, he maintains his insurance interest is greater than the real estate, yet he received no warning signals from Mr. Sherratt. Mr. Johnson does admit that the director did give him some written informa- tion. The trustee is also upset the question of conflict of interest insurance was raised at the June 18 school board meeting and he didn't declare conflict of interest because he wasn't aware it was being discussed. What happened is that Shakespeare area trustee Rodney Bell said he was disappointed the premium for trustees' conflict of interest insurance had doubled from $25 annually to $50. He feels if trustees want the insurance they should pay for it themselves. Mr. Johnson didn't know of Mr. Bell's comments until he read the minutes of that meeting. He also doesn't think there is anything more he can do.
