Sitting Room haven for loca
For the third year the Van Egmond House
will feature, "The Sitting Room", a show-
place of local arts and crafts.
Constructed in 1846, the . two-storey
Georgian home is a local tourist attraction.
Visitors to the house are treated to a tour by
Denise Dudiarme, a 20 -year-old economics
student at Wilfred Laurier University,
working at the house for the summer. The
"Sitting Room", located in the home's
original dining and living room, is an added
feature.
To date 18 people have provided such
things as knitting, woodwork, glass and
mirror art, paintings and sketches for display
and sale. The work is sold on a commission
basis.
Some of the more local artisans include
Grace Corbett, Viola Taylor and Annie
Staffen, all of Seaforth, Linda Neeb of Dublin,
Doug Chamney of Auburn, Eva Laing of
Staffa, Donna Price of Exeter, Karen
Whitmore of Clinton, Paul Eisler of Mitchell,
Peter Chandeler of W Ingham and Henry
Young, also of Clinton.
Judy Gratton, now living in Florida, sends
sketches and paintings to the house through
her mother in Exeter.
The house is open daily from May through
Labor Day. It may remain open for the month
of September.

Teacher loses bidto regain job
Former Exeter high school teacher Joanne
Young couldn't get the courts to overturn her
suspension put on her by the Huron County
board of education because she missed
teaching days while participating in anti -war
demonstrations.
Ms. Young was fired effective Dec. 31 for
repeatedly being absent from school. Her
prolonged absences were marked by time
spent in jail because she refused to identify
herself to police officials.
Before being fired, Ms. Young was
suspended without pay for 12 days in
November of 1983. She filed a grievance with
the Ontario Labor Relations Board which
upheld the suspension without pay. In turn,
she appealed that decision to the Ontario
divisional court for a judicial review of that
grievance decision-.
The grievance was handled properly and
the decision was sound, ruled Ontario
supreme court justices Horace Krever, M.A.
Craig and RS. Montgomery. Those three
justices make up the divisional court.
Goderich lawyer Dan Murphy, the board's
lawyer, said the decision means school
boards can now suspend teachers without
pay.
• No board official could be reached for
comment because the board office is closed
while repairs are being done and they are on
holidays.
