Perth to be
Canada Post
testing spot
Canada Rost 'will be doing some test
mailing in Perth County, says Perth MP Dr.
Harry Brightwell.
Dr. Brightwell told the annual of the Perth
County Progressive Conservative Associa-
tion that Michael Warren, head of the crown
corporation told him Perth would be tested at
some unknown time.
The member of parliament said his'
meeting with Mr. Warren a couple of weeks
ago came about because of the numerous
complaints the local MP receives from his
constituents. Dr. Brightwell said on average,
he receives four or five complaints about the
post office a week.
He said he has heard complaints that it
takes five days for a letter posted at the
Stratford Post Office to be put in someone's
mail box in the same building..
Dr. Brightwell said Canada Post is now in
the process of working out a format to be used
in the testing: He notes if any constituents
want to take part in the testing they should
contact his Stratford riding office. However,
there .will be a limited number of people
required for the testing.
The former veterinarian said he is very
concerned about the moral of the postal
employees. Mr. Warren told him that moral.
goes down when there are numerous
complaints about the post office service.
"I am going to make every effort to search
out the good points," said Dr. Brightwell.
DHC POSSIBLE FOR PERTH n
The idea of a district health council for
Perth County will bloom this fall when the
Perth District Health Unit sponsors a public
meeting on the subject.
Board of health chairman John Lindner,
told the July 11 meeting of county council
there is considerable interest in getting more
information on a district health council for the
county.
A district health council is made up of 19 to
.29 volunteers who donate their time and
expertise to work with the ministry of health
in planning the health care system for their
community. Its main responsibility is to
identify local needs, look at alternatives, set
up priorities and prepare an all encompassing
health care program within provincial health
guidelines.
Medical officer of health Dr. Susan
Tamblyn said the public meeting would be to
see if there is enough interest in setting up a
steering committee. /
In the late 1970s, Lloyd Morrison of RR 1,
St. Marys headed a steering committee which
looked into the feasibility of a district health
council for the combined counties of Huron
and Perth.
"1 was disappointed it didn't pass," Mr.
Morrison said Friday. He was and still is in
favor of the idea of district health councils.
"W a would have had all those volunteers
who would have given free advice," com-
mented the former county warden.
The steering committee voted against the
district health council concept and recom-
mended to the provincial ministry of health
that no such council be formed in Huron or
Perth. .
Recalling that time, Mr. Morrison said the
medical profession at that time voted against
the idea because as he understood it they
were afraid of interference. However. Mr.
Morrison said the final vote on the
recommendation was close.
Dr. Tamblyn said informal meetings
among the medical community were held last
fall and the outcome of those meetings was to
refer the whole topic to the board of health.
She said no details have yet been worked
out about the fall meeting.
There are currently 26 district health
councils across the province.
