At the Branch Jacklin, Newell excel at district track and field event By Jo -Ann McDonald It was a quiet week around the Brussels Legion Branch. Many folks have been asking when the "Catch The Ace" will return and it takes some time. Filing the report, applying for a new licence and then getting tickets printed all takes time. It is a busy time for everyone and the tickets will be back as soon as everything is back in order. Watch for the opening date in The Citizen. Sandra's Soups for a Cause are still available at the Branch. There are cream and broth soups available and a portion of the sales goes to the Branch for Veteran's services. Comrades Eric and Deb Ross spent a few days at Lake Joseph last week. It is a camp that welcomes veterans from Parkwood and Sunnybrook hospitals for a stay. Besides the dozen or more veterans, with an average age of 85, nurses and companion aids, as well as a few members of the District C Hospital Royal Canadian Legion all attend. The veterans enjoy the fresh air, some time on a boat, fishing or even swimming, they have a dance and enjoy games and fun times. "Rockin the '50s and '60s" was the Helping out Artificial External Defibrillators in Huron need to be replaced and organizations are being asked to help replace them. Adam Gwalchmai of May McConville Omni Insurance Brokers' Goderich and Clinton offices, centre, presented one for the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre to Huron County Paramedic Services Field Supervisor Art McNaughton, left, and Community Paramedicine Co- ordinator Joanne Hickey. (Denny Scott photo) Brussels, Blyth United Churches switch times A NOTE FROM BETTY By Betty Graber Watson Call 887-9231 Ah, the rain came. All around us last week, folks were talking about the rain they had — not for us. Then it was our turn. Finally, the moisture started and it came gently and over a few hours, just what the vegetation needed. It's good to be reminded of how blessed we are to live here, the dusty soil was one clue. Holiday plans are in the works. Dates set, plans made, flights booked and anticipation riding high. Every family uses the summer months to gather. Numbers involved, distance to travel and holiday schedules all determine how often a reunion can be arranged. With Alberta a big factor for us, having all children in one spot is a rare occasion, so my anticipation is rising by the day. Phil, Lauren and Hark fly in next month. Except for farmers and a few others too, summer is a time to relax. Churches, along with other organizations, let details simmer for the summer and give everyone a break. Things still happen, just with a little less attention to detail. Just a reminder for the Blyth and Brussels United Church folk, our time change is this week — Brussels worships at 9:30 a.m. and Blyth at 11 a.m. for the next year and to let us adjust, both churches are closed for August. The need at North Huron Food Share remains high. Please share with those whose money does not cover housing and food. We need to remember, "there but for the grace of God go I" So a cheque or food in the containers is the way to acknowledge the working poor. Use your summer well, do something different, go to a new place, learn a new thing. We have so many opportunities in our area and get so busy in our wee worlds that we don't see what we have available. Learn and grow and even change, the world just might be a better place. Enjoy the days. Bye now, Betty G.W. FORM.Rf Brussels Legion Branch 218 presents Karaoke with Stubby D Friday, July 6 starts at 8:00 p.m. Music, food, fun - drop in and enjoy! theme for the dance party and they had a blast. The fish fry crew was in Bayfield on Saturday for a fry at the Bluewater Campground. They fed about 125 for the evening meal. Working for the Branch were Deb Ross, Randy White, Catrina Josling and Chris Brown. Eric Ross was on clean-up duties upon his return. Good job folks. The district track and field competition was held in Kincardine on Saturday with 10 Brussels/ Walton youth participating. It was a great day and many of the youth did exceptionally well. There were at least six youth participating for the first time and they really enjoyed the experience. Senior athlete, Ryan Jacklin, participated in the 17 -and - under group, repeating his winning ways capturing first in shot put, discus, javelin and now, hammer throw. Another Senior is Jamie Newell and she captured second in both long jump and triple jump. In the 15 -and -under division, our area had four competitors, including Matt Oldridge finishing first in triple jump, fourth in long jump and fourth in 100 -metre run. Lucas Holthuysen finished seventh in the high jump and long jump. Carson Heise finished first in javelin, second in discus and third in shot put. In the Girls 15 -and - under category, Walton's Claire Mitchell finished second in discus and third in javelin. In the 13 -and -under category, Lucas Jacklin finished eighth in the 100 -metre run and Liam Watson finished fifth in the 1200 -metre run. Maddy Bernard finished third in triple jump and fourth in long jump and Madison Koch finished first in javelin, second in triple jump, fourth in long jump and fifth in high jump. A former local, Ava Sutcliffe, now Clinton, finished third in high jump, and sixth in both 100- and 200 -metre runs. Obviously, we have many talented young people in our area and congratulations to them all. I'm not sure how many of them will go on to provincials in St. Catharines in mid- July, but we wish them well and will be finding out! The Saturday afternoon euchre was held with eight -and -a -half tables of players at play. Comrade Glenn Bridge had no helper on Saturday and a reminder, we are still looking for another couple of volunteers to help with the events. Contact the Branch please if you could help at least once a month. Winners were: first, Bruce and Carol Hoelscher, 84; second, Ann Laidlaw and Joyce Hodgins, 83; third, Bruce and Joan, 68; low, Bush Whittard and Pauline Bennett, 46; lone hands, Mae Ritchie, Lillian Appleby, Lois and Millie, six. Euchre is every two weeks. The Brussels Cemetery decoration service for Sunday afternoon was cancelled due to the poor forecast. A steady rain in the morning looked like it had settled in for the day. It takes an hour to do set up and getting the word out to cancel takes time, so an early morning decision had to be made. Churches and radio stations were called, pipe band and members contacted to get the message out. We regret having to cancel, but no one likes to get wet. We can report that 34 names of loved ones were on the remembrance list and will be remembered at next year's event. We thank those who planned to attend and appreciate everyone's understanding in cancelling. The Sunday night dance had a good crowd to enjoy the music of the Tri -Country band. There were just over 60 in attendance. We were happy to have Glenn Bridge join us toga Wangat UBS' Brussels Community Bible Chapel - VBS Bible Stories, Crafts, Games, Snacks July 2 - 6, - 9:00 - 11:30AM Ages 5 - 12 - Register Upon Arrival No Cost !! 650 Alexander St. Contact: Andrew - 519-357-7302 Janice - 519-887-8138 FOLLOWING JESUS r THE LIGHT of THE WORK in replacing door girl Mary Bradshaw for the evening.
