Entertainment Leisure Khan to make Festival debut in `Curling Club' First -timer Despite a varied acting career, Omar Alex Khan will make his Blyth Festival debut later this week in The New Canadian Curling Club. He will then take on 1837: The Farmers' Revolt later in the season. (Photo submitted) By Denny Scott The Citizen For the first time Omar Alex Khan will be bringing his theatrical experience to the Blyth Festival this season with roles in The New Canadian Curling Club and 1837.^ The Farmers' Revolt. "It's exciting, as an actor, to do these completely different stories," he said. "One is a Mark Crawford comedy and the other is a Canadian classic." Khan said he is excited about The New Canadian Curling Club because it's an ensemble piece with a chance to do physical comedy. "It's very exciting and I have a lot of fun doing it," he said. "In New Canadian Curling Club, I'm playing an Indian that has been living in Canada for several years. He is married, has children and works at Tim Hortons. He's trying to become the manager at the coffee shop. He signed up for the curling classes for newcomers because he thinks it's a good, Canadian thing to do." The roles haven't been laid out for 1837, but Khan said he is going to enjoy being part of the historic work, while also working with Artistic Director Gil Garratt on the company's interpretation of the play. Since Khan decided to work in Blyth for the summer, a move that comes from getting to know Garratt over the past three years, Khan has heard nothing but great things about the location. Heritage Fund apps approved By Shawn Loughlin The Citizen Five organizations have been approved for Huron Heritage Fund grants for a total of $21,000 during the fund's first of two intakes this year. Huron County Museum Senior Curator Elizabeth French -Gibson told Huron County Council at its June 13 committee of the whole meeting that a total of seven applications were received, but two had to be denied for various reasons. The first approved grant went to the Bayfield Lions Club for the replacement of cedar posts on the perimeter of Clan Gregor Square. The county approved a grant of $4,000 for the project, which is from the Reuben R. Sallows Gallery expected to be completed by August. The second approved application is going to the St. Thomas Anglican Church in Seaforth for its bell tower restoration. The application was approved for $5,000 and the project is expected to be completed in October. Jason, Stephen and Andrew Oud were the third applicants approved for a grant to help restore the former Royal Canadian Air Force Clinton Base's radome. The fund approved a grant of $5,000 to the group, which will be completed in the late fall. The site is expected to be one of the stops along a walking, cycling and driving trail proposed by the Municipality of Huron East. The grant of $2,000 will aid in the production of Ten Lost Years, a play about the Great Depression. Council approved the grants. While there will be a fall intake for the program, only $4,000 from the original allotment of $25,000 remains for applicants at that time. -•rxSrSt,r.- Mapp,* 50.11 aw elli3.4V1i Emily and Ernie Phillips 4 Come and c. Saturday, June 23 1-4 pm Blyth Lions Park Best wishes only please 1 "When I tell people I'm going to be working there, they get really excited," he said. "They tell me how lovely Blyth, as a town, is and they think highly of the work the Festival produces." Khan lives in Stratford, but is originally from Winnipeg. He came to Stratford and, last year, was involved in three productions there at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival. "I think being at the Stratford Festival, I realized this is a good part of the country for me to be in terms of my career," he said. "Then I met a gal from Stratford and it helped to make the decision to stay here pretty easy." Khan met Melissa Renaud, a theatre technician, through one of the shows he was in last year. As an actor, Khan has experience in theatre as well as film and television, and says his preference is definitely being on the stage. "You get to delve into the work a little more," he said. "With film and television, there tends not to be a lot of rehearsal. They rehearse the shot a few minutes before action, then they just have to do it. I do like that rush, but if I have to pick one, from an artistic point of view, it's the theatre." A graduate of the University of Winnipeg's theatre and film program, Khan said he is excited to be a new Ontarian and Stratfordian and is looking at this opportunity in Blyth as a way to become part of this part of the province.
