Jacklin earns spot at international invitational
Gold medal
Ryan Jacklin, centre, earned three gold medals at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic
Associations High School Championships in hammer throw, javelin and discus (shown). The
feat earned him a spot on Canada's team at an international invitational later this year. Jacklin

Just several years after first
tackling the sport, F.E. Madill
Secondary School student Ryan
Jacklin will be representing Canada
in the hammer throw at the Jamaican
U18 Invitational later this month in
Kingston, Jamaica.
Jacklin will be competing in the
hammer throw, joining 20 other
young men and 21 young women
representing Canada at the event
June 30 to July 1.
The Belgrave youth started in
throwing events at track and field
shortly after he began high school,
finding he was adept at javelin, shot
put and the hammer throw.
This month, he earned Ontario
Federation of School Athletic
Associations (OFSAA) gold in all
three events after finding success at
the local level, Western Ontario
Secondary School Athletics
Association (WOSSAA) level and
then the OFSAA district level before
competing against the best in
Ontario.
Jacklin said that being named to
the Canadian team for the Jamaican
invitational hadn't quite registered
with him yet when he talked to The
Citizen shortly after the
announcement last week.
"I would say I really haven't let it
sink in yet," he said in an interview
with The Citizen "It's hard to say
how it's going to impact me. I
haven't been there before and I don't
think I'll believe it until I am down
there"

Impressive performances
Three athletes from F.E. Madill Secondary School attended
the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations High
School Championship and came away with four gold
medals in the six events they competed in. Above, Hannah
VanStuyvenberg hurled her best discus throw of the
season, hitting 40.24 metres, to win gold in the Junior Girls
competition and set a new benchmark for Madill. Ryan

students to the event and competed in the long jump

opportunity for Jacklin as far as his
athletic career is concerned, it's also
a new experience for him as the
furthest he remembers travelling was
Mexico on a family trip when he was
11 years old.
"It really represents a lot of new
experiences," he said.
Jacklin said that the three gold
medals that preceeded the win were
quite an achievement and, earlier in
the competition, he didn't think he
would even be able to make the
podium.
He was trailing early in the
competitions but came back,
managing the three first -place
finishes.
Jacklin credits one of his FEMSS
coaches, Maureen Lisle, with
keeping him focused at the event,
allowing him to excel.
"She gave me proverbs to read to
myself before each event, which
helped me a lot," he said. "All of my
coaches have played a role in
helping me succeed"
Jacklin's coaches include Glenn
Elliott, Randy Miller and Barry
Bolley of the Saugeen Track and
Field Club and Lisle and Sandy
Maclntyre at FEMSS.
As far as preparing for the
invitational, he said that he's playing
it by ear, not wanting to develop bad
habits or tax himself prior to the
event.
"It all depends on how I feel," he
said. "If I'm feeling like my energy
is low, I'm not going to practise
because I'll be practising bad
techniques, which will only make
me do worse"
Jacklin said he wasn't feeling well
in the days leading up to the
announcement, for example, so he
took some time off from training.
"I will practise on my own, keep
my rhythms and make sure I have
my energy back and my nervous
system is where it should be," he
said.
When it comes to his success,
Jacklin said, aside from his coaches,
the only secret is to push through no
matter what happens.
"You just have to keep going when
the going gets tough," he said.
"That's really it."

Jacklin's results from the Jamaican
U18 Invitational.
