A meal tailored for fathers Huronlea Home for the Aged's Auxiliary kept up their tradition of the Father's Day barbecue last Friday. The event brought families together to mark the special day and, thanks to the efforts of Glen Howling, above, everyone had a meal to enjoy. Legion President Jo -Ann McDonald, left, presented her with her cheque and they are joined by Deb Ross, right, who drew the lucky ticket. (Photo submitted) By Jo -Ann McDonald It has been a very quiet week around the Brussels Legion Branch. It has also been great weather for bartender Sandra Josling Brown to be on holidays. We thank Comrades Glenn Bridge, Nanci Ducharme and Deb Ross for covering the shifts. The Catch the Ace progressive raffle has found a winner! The draw on Friday evening had the winning name of Tracey McArter. She chose the number five envelope and she found the ace of spades. Congratulations to Tracey on winning the jackpot of $3,574.50. This concludes the Catch the Ace draw at this time. The Branch will finish the paperwork and will have to apply for a new licence, so it may be closer to the fall before the Catch the Ace tickets are back. We thank everyone for supporting the Branch for the last 10 weeks and congratulate the 10 winners during the draw. A total of just over $6,000 was awarded to the lucky winners. The five businesses that sold tickets had increased foot traffic into their stores and we appreciate their support. We are still looking for a Comrade or two to run the Saturday afternoon euchres. They are from 12:30-3:30 p.m., every other week. If a couple of pairs of volunteers could be found then it would be once a month for them. Please call the Branch or Glenn Bridge if you would be interested in helping and we can match you up with another volunteer. Husband and wife teams are welcome! The Brussels Cemetery decoration service is on Sunday, June 24 at 2 p.m. We hope all can make it to celebrate and remember the lives of loved ones. This is for all community members and all faiths. The Legion only organizes it for the community. It has had very small attendance in years past and it would be nice to see a larger crowd. The Brussels Pipe Band plays and Comrade Sandra Cable leads the service. Please accept this as your invitation to attend. The Brussels Cemetery is always at its finest for this day thanks to the hard work of Dale and Starr Bachert and the gravestones are adorned with beautiful floral arrangements. The Branch has functions planned for the summer that will require help from all members. The first large function is the Lucknow Old Boys Reunion on Sunday, July 1. The Branch will be doing a fish fry and extra help will be needed. The end of July is the Tigers fastball tournament and help for the food booth is always needed. Some folks cook, some take money or maybe just be on hand to go to the Branch for supplies. All help is appreciated even for a couple of hours. Thank You! to everyone who attended our annual Firefighters' Breakfast on Father's Day. Thank you also for the generous donations. Your continuing support is greatly appreciated. Brussels Firefighters Volunteer groups host local meals A NOTE FROM BETTY By Betty Graber Watson Call 887-9231 The young set are counting the days; school is nearly over for this year. It's another step taken on the road of life, another set of accomplishments, new knowledge gained, new skills and friendships to take on into life. For us, the years fly by. Not so much for the school kids who often have other things they would rather be doing. Looking back, the hope is that the memory of school shows a good time of learning and growing. It's the time for the introduction to the world outside the family, a time to see that people are not all the same and the time to start seeing the balance of differences, life and work. That seems pretty heavy for the wee ones, but children always cope and so the hope this week is that their memory of this school year is a positive one. I hope you've had the opportunity to visit the Friday farmers' market, now at the Four Winds Barn. It's a busy spot by noon on Fridays as the vendors set up their wares ready for the 2 p.m. opening. This venture is a lot of physical work for all involved, as each spot gets ready. It always surprises me when people come to any event prior to the start time and expect to be served. It's like going to a meal an hour before you were invited. Oh well, celebrate our differences. Brussels folk certainly like to eat and if any organizations need a little financial aid, offering food hits the spot. So Friday saw the Huronlea Auxiliary offering food to help their cause while the Soup & More 2 folks were ready to fill plates in their Friday routine. Come Saturday, the volunteers for Kid's Corner, the vacation time gathering, this year July 16-20, were filling bellies at Foodland. There's nothing like the smell of fried onions to make you stop and appreciate food. Sunday morning had the smiling faces of our fire department bringing the best out of breakfast. Each of these had support for the good work that happens. The gathering of people for a common cause is one of the things our community does well. Get a committed group together with a stated goal and if it's one that benefits community, people will attend. For the calorie intake, it's probably time to go easy for a few days, but all that food was for very worthwhile causes. The weather is indicating that it's time to check out the pool schedule. Lesson times are set and various adult times are available. Pop to the pool to find a time that suits you; no out of town driving, no snow to handle, no huge costs or crowds. So do yourself a flavour, get into the pool and improve your mobility, your flexibility, your mood and your fitness level. Enjoy the summer days. Betty G.W.
