Entertainment & Leisure `Every Fibre of My Being' to open gallery season Fibre art The Blyth Festival Art Gallery will open its season of professional shows on Friday, June 22 with "Every Fibre of My Being", an exhibit by Stratford -based textile artist Kathy White. Above is "Harrison Park in July", a piece comprised of Peruvian wool and beeswax on wood. (Photo submitted) At first glance, you see a complex image of a natural scene. Is it an oil painting, acrylic or watercolour? On closer examination the viewer is surprised to find that every element of the extraordinary piece before them is made up of strands of colourful wool yarn. Kathy White is a textile artist who, with her musician husband, Doug White, has lived in Stratford for the past two years. Although she studied English at the University of Waterloo and began a career in business, White continued to explore the arts through courses at Fanshawe College in London, the Dundas Valley School of Art and Globe Studios in Kitchener. She studied a variety of techniques: oil, acrylic, watercolour, ceramics and even spent time as a commercial graphic artist. Throughout all of it, she also pursued traditional needlecrafts, including embroidery and knitting. When her stash of wool yarns grew to alarming proportions, she realized that this was her preferred medium and began to create her signature textile art pieces. She uses organic materials like wool and sweet-smelling beeswax to explore moments of natural beauty in rural Ontario throughout the seasons. The halo of fibres created by the wool softens the divisions between colours and adds a dreamy haze to her work. The project will see special head - in -hole photo props created beside the courtyard at Blyth Memorial Hall. The structures will include traditional Victorian -era dressed man and woman models for visitors to pop their heads through and have their photo taken. The attire featured will include a morning suit and top hat for the male head -in-hole model, while the woman will be wearing a hoop skirt dress -form. The name of the project, according to organizer Jennifer Triemstra-Johnston, is designed with social media in mind. She hopes that, through using the hashtagged- name, participation in the program can be tracked. The project came out of the Regional Tourism Organization 4 (RTO4) DestinationBLYTH initiative and was picked up by Triemstra-Johnston who has coordinated several different individuals and organizations to make the project a reality. Jim Wallace of Sharpe's Creek Forge near Goderich will be building the structure for the project while Michelle Greydanus of Greyhaven Gardens will be helping with the flowers that will adorn them. Triemstra-Johnston, who teaches Fashion Arts and Creative Textiles Studio (FACTS) through Blyth Arts and Cultural 14/19 Inc. will be providing costume components and North Huron Township will be permitting the use of the space alongside 14/19 and the Blyth Festival. Triemstra-Johnston will be also be maintaining the installation once it is fully implemented. The project should be ready for July, Triemstra-Johnston said, adding that each season will feature different floral arrangements around the dressed figures. "In the summer we will have a live -flower display, while in the fall it will be harvest -inspired and include cornhusks and wheat," she said. "In the winter, we will have a Christmas theme as well as some other fun ideas." She said the head -in-hole installations will be unique in that they will be "living" thanks to the flowers and creations surrounding them. She also said that the structures will be permanent.
