Gowing has been mayor of the municipality for two terms, a councillor before that and was the first two -term Huron County Warden, holding the role from 2014 to 2016. He said he was making the announcement "to be fair to everyone". "I've enjoyed my time on council immensely," he said. "I've got to meet so many good people, great people from our area and across the country, but it's time for me to step aside." Gowing said he felt it was time for some new voices around the council table. However, he did feel that giving voters a sense of continuity was also important, which is why he had discussed the issue with Deputy -Mayor Jamie Heffer who recently announced his intention to run for Gowing's position. "I certainly support Jamie in stepping into this role," he said. "As I stated, it's time for me to step aside." Gowing said "life is not infinite" and he has things he wishes to dedicate time to including spending time helping his children build their lives and work around his own household, citing existing development on his farm property. "I won't be going anywhere," he said. "I just think it's time for me to step away from this. I've enjoyed sitting on council with each and every one of you, and staff, and the great people of Morris-Turnberry." Gowing plans on treating the rest of the term as he has the entirety of his time on council: accomplishing what council sets out to do. "This isn't going to be a lame duck period to me," he said. "We're not going to stay away from anything." He said he will be going "full bore" to the end of the term as there are many projects that need attention in the municipality. His announcement came after Heffer announced that he was running for mayor in the October election. Councillor Sharen Zinn will be seeking re-election, while Andrew Somers, a Walton resident, has also filed papers to run for a councillor position in the election.
