Columnist tracks history through family trip
Don't you love the changing
seasons? Each one is a miracle and a
wonder to behold as our view of the
land changes to accommodate the
cycle of life.
Spring and summer offer the
beauty of nature in the fields and
trees, flowers and animals all around
us — a reminder of the growth that
comes when conditions are good.
It's also a good time to travel to see
all the bounty and beauty.
Last week we headed east to enjoy
the magnificent St. Lawrence River.
Our history can be seen in the
Prescott area with names and places
that are part of our being here. This
was home to Doc and and Anne
Meyers. Forts and battlefields there
remind us of the not -so -quiet times
with our southern neighbour and the
skirmishes with the old country that
were frequent in the 1700s and
1800s.
Bountiful harvest

At the Branch
'Ace' jackpot climbs to ,3,500
By Jo -Ann McDonald
It is quieter around the Brussels
Legion Branch now that a few of the
weekly events are on hiatus for
summer. The Cadet Corp finished its
year the last week of May and this
week they were off to have fun. The
members of the Corp boarded the
bus on Thursday afternoon and
headed for Ottawa. They had two
fun -filled and busy days seeing the
sights of the city. They returned
home on Sunday, tired and
exhausted from the long drive.
The exercise class finished for the
summer. The ladies will have lots of
running around during the summer
outdoors and we hope they will
return this fall.
The Thursday night darts are also
over, so there are lots of open nights
at the Branch in the summer.
The fish fry crew was in Wroxeter
on Thursday evening for a
fundraiser. The crew consisted of
Glenn Bridge, George Adams, Greg
Wilson and Debbie Ross.
There has been no rest for the crew
as they went to Hensall on Friday
evening for another fry. The crew
consisted of Deb Ross, Jo -Ann
McDonald, Mabel Glanville and
Sharon Robbins. Between the two
dinners, the group fed 320 that day.
The Catch the Ace draw on Friday
evening was conducted by Sandra
Josling and Catrina Josling with
Jayne Ross assisting. The winner of
$226 was Sheila Prescott and she
found the 10 of hearts in envelope
number 51. The Ace is still hiding
and the projected jackpot for this
week will be $3,500. Karaoke with
Stubby D had a nice crowd enjoying
the music.
The Saturday afternoon euchre
had 10 tables of players hoping to be
winners. The top two teams had 75
points. Winners were Peggy and
Marilyn and Carol and Susan; third
was Ann Laidlaw and Joyce
Hodgins; lone hands, Bruce and
Joan Dow and the low, Nancy Turner
and Lou Lakey, 40.
The Sunday night dance had a
good crowd of nearly 75 enjoying
the music of the Country Versatiles.
They always deliver good music
and have recently added a
new member to their musical group.
Save the date of Aug. 10 for a
highly successful and popular
musical event at the Brussels
Legion. We are bringing the "Ring
of Fire: A Johnny Cash Experience"
musical entertainment to our stage.
The Ring of Fire team is a
committed group that raises
awareness of the Royal Canadian
Legions across our country. They do
not need a glamorous venue and
consider it an honour and privilege
to perform at local Royal Canadian
Legions. We have the date and the
entertainment committee is
discussing added features to the
night. Tickets are limited and are
available at the Brussels Legion.

There are lovely old buildings and
walks by the river that make our
history real.
It's a good reminder that we are
not alone, but live in co-operation
with many seen and unseen heroes
over many, many years. A neat spot
called Dewar's Inn with a dock on
the St. Lawrence and great
flowerbeds was just the spot to read,
doze and contemplate life and our
many blessings.
The United Church was
established by an Act of Parliament
in June of 1925, so we're part of the
history of this country. That was in
the days of horse travel, so churches
were set with distance in mind.
Times have changed and the need for
a church every seven miles is gone.
Thanks to this and many other
reasons, several churches have
closed in our area. So, it was
celebration time this weekend for
Mitchell United Church as it proudly
showed its new building to the
public.
They were congratulated on their
many fine choices, all the things that
took time and patience and much
stress were celebrated. The sorrow
of saying goodbye to their unsafe
historical building, their years of
meeting in other spots and their
commitment to community were all
acknowledged and celebrated. A job
very well done.
Be sure to say thank you to the
town guys and the Horticultural
Society for the nifty planters on
Turnberry Street, it takes a lot of
people to make things happen.
Details and worked hours are often
forgotten and we need to appreciate
the people and things that make us
proud to call Brussels home.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
