The F.E. Madill School track and
field team had some outstanding
results at the annual Western Ontario
Secondary Schools Athletic
Association (WOSSAA)
Championships held at TD
Waterhouse Stadium in London last
week.
The 28 Madill athletes who
qualified for the meet performed
well earning 26 personal bests and
two relay team bests.
In the Midget Girls division,
Mackenzie Finch continued to
improve her distance running times
for the 800 -metre, 1,500 -metre and
3,000 -metre races, earning a top -five
finish in all three races.
The Junior Girls team (Meghan
Ash, Emma Jackson, Brooke Jez,
Erika Lewis, Jaime Newell, Breelle
Shaw, and Hanna VanStuyvenberg)
accumulated enough total points to
win the overall championship for
their division.
The team has the advantage of
strength in the throws, distance
running and jumps.
Hanna VanStuyvenberg set the
pace early hurling the discus 36.65
metres to break the existing
WOSSAA record by over two
metres and winning a gold medal. In
shot put, her put of 11.85 metres was
a personal best throw and set a new
school benchmark earning her third
place.
In distance running, Brooke Jez
continued her onslaught on records
in the 1,500 -metre (4:58.16) and
3,000 -metre (11:10.46) races. Both
results broke existing school
Over the weekend the 12 Madill
track and field qualifiers for Ontario
Federation of School Athletic
Associations (OFSAA) West
Regionals made the trek to Windsor
to compete at the Pan Am facility at
University of Windsor.
The team performances were
outstanding with Madill athletes
earning 13 individual personal bests,
breaking four school records, setting
four new school benchmarks, and
establishing one new OFSAA
regional record.
In order to advance to OFSAA,
athletes had to place in the top four
of their events. Three Madill athletes
will be advancing in six events.
Ryan Jacklin continued his assault
on throwing records early in the
meet, competing in the Junior Boys
discus. He hurled the implement
61.78 metres to win the event and
break the former record of Jordan
Young. He also crushed his own
school record in javelin when he
won the event with a 55.28 -metre
throw. Plagued with faulting
problems, he came up second in the
shot event with a put of 17.26
metres.
Teammate Hanna VanStuyvenberg
also made her presence felt in the
discus circle when she threw a
personal best 39.46 metres to win
the event and set a new school
benchmark. The throw is presently
the best distance in Ontario for her
Windsor
records. The 3,000 -metre time broke
a 40 -year-old record set by Janet
Wood in 1978 by nine seconds.
In the jumping pits, Jaime Newell
had her best leaps of the season
jumping 5.04 metres in long jump
and 10.59 metres in the triple jump.
Both distances set new school
benchmarks and earned her first -
and second -place finishes. Newell
also sprinted down the 100 -metre
stretch in 13.34 seconds to win
second place in an exciting and
extremely close finish.
In the Midget Boys division,
Steven Schraa earned a top -five
finish in both the 1,500 -metre
(4:37.15) and 3,000 -metre
(9:57.35). His time in the 3,000 -
metre race set a new school
benchmark.
Matt Oldridge jumped 5.86
metres to win WOSSAA silver and
teammate Jared Fitch leapt 11.48
metres in triple jump for a
qualifying spot.
Ryan Jacklin continued to crush
records in the Junior Boys throwing
events. Beginning with the discus
event, he hurled the implement
62.03 metres, breaking the former
record of Jordan Young by four
metres.
His second WOSSAA record
came in shot put when he heaved the
shot 17.63 metres. Jacklin won
WOSSAA gold in all three of his
events including javelin, with a
throw of 54.26 metres.
In the Senior Boys division, Matt
Darrell qualified in both the 400 -
metre race (51.17 seconds) and long
jump (5.89 metres). Austin Eadie
leapt 12.59 metres in triple jump to
win second overall and then jumped
six metres in long jump to clinch a
bronze medal.
Brandon Murray, a long-time
member of the track team, ran
strongly in his final race for Madill,
posting a personal best time of
2:15.18 for the 800 -metre race.
Murray had run countless races over
his five years of high school and has
been a hardworking and successful
member of the team.
age group. She also rose to the
challenge in shot put and claimed
third place with a throw of 12.43
metres, over half a metre better than
any of her previous throws.
In the 300 -metre hurdle event,
Meghan Ash sprinted cleanly over
the hurdles on the oval in her best
time this season to set a new school
benchmark of 49.73 seconds.
In the jumping pits, Jaime Newell
had her best leap of the season with
5.07 metres earning her third place,
setting a new benchmark, and
earning a berth to OFSAA.
In Senior Boys, first-year senior,
Austin Eadie, made his longest leaps
of the season jumping 6.13 metres in
long jump and 13.04 metres in triple
jump. Teammate Matt Darrell
sprinted the 400 -metre oval in a
personal best time of 50.43 seconds,
narrowly missing the school record.
The Madill distance runners had
some outstanding races. Steven
Schraa, competing in Midget Boys
1,500 -metre race, ran the distance in
4:27.37 breaking a record set by
Sandy Anderson in 1987 (4:31.0).
Then, racing against a strong field in
the 3,000 -metre, race he claimed yet
another school record shaving nearly
seven seconds off a record set by
Sjaan Gerth in 1996.
Midget Girl competitor
Mackenzie Finch continued to lower
her times running strongly in both
the 1,500 -metre (5:04.88) and
3,000 -metre (11:10.93) races.
In the Junior Girls division,
Brooke Jez, hampered this season by
injuries in training, still managed to
run a respectable 5:01.15 in the
1,500 -metre race.
Jacklin, VanStuyvenberg, and
Newell advance to the OFSAA
Ontario High School
Championships scheduled for June
7-9 at York University. Several
Madill athletes also plan to compete
in the District C Legion Meet to be
held in Kincardine on Saturday, June
23.
