PAGE 2. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, JUNE 7, 2018. New location working well for farmers' market By Denny Scott The Citizen Brussels Four Winds Barn Manager Kathy Stephenson said the launch of the Brussels Farmers' Market under the barn's banner has been a success. Held on May 18, the event saw 15 vendors, alongside the musical talents of Cappy Onn, fill the lower level of the barn on that first day. "Everyone seemed to have a good day," said Stephenson. "The vendors were happy with the money they made and all 15 went home happy." Nine of the vendors were new to the Brussels Farmers' Market scene and Stephenson said she is already fielding calls from new vendors wanting to reserve their space at the market for the weeks to come. While most of the vendors were inside on May 18 due to the intense wind, Stephenson said that the outdoor space will be open to vendors as the season continues. (Hannah Dickie photo) At the Branch Cadets taking trip to Ottawa By Jo -Ann McDonald The week began at the Brussels Legion Branch with the final Lions Club meal for the 2017/2018 year. The group of about 24 enjoyed a roast beef dinner before conducting their meeting. They had plenty to discuss with their upcoming elimination draw and then they will be on a summer hiatus. The Cadet Corp 2967 held its annual review outside of the Branch on Tuesday evening. There was a great turnout of family, friends and invited guests to enjoy the drill formations, demonstrations and presentations. The Corp will be on hiatus for the summer following their year-end trip to Ottawa this weekend. Congratulations to all the Cadets for a good year. We thank Eric Dwyer of Dwyer Landscaping for graciously sweeping and rolling the lawn at the Branch. He did a great job and is excited about his new business venture. The end of May is the end of the Legion year and we now begin our new year. Many things have not changed as there is now a two-year term on the executive, so elections did not have to be held. The one change is the retiring of our treasurer, Alicia McDonald, after six years. She has done an amazing job for the Branch during the regular business of the Branch, the many grant applications and reports for the addition, solving disagreements with Revenue Canada over HST and dealing with bank loans and whatever the zone or district Legion representatives required from the Branch. We have appreciated all her hard work and wish her well. We are happy to have found a very worthy replacement for Alicia in Nancy Bridge. She will begin her duties as treasurer of the Branch in June. They will work together in June as Alicia finishes reports for May and the year-end report and Nancy transitions for the June reports. We are happy to know our finances are in the capable hands of Nancy as we continue to make improvements at the Branch. Welcome Nancy! The Catch the Ace draw on Friday evening with conducted by Jamie Mitchell, Jo -Ann McDonald and Catrina Josling. The lucky winner was Emily Cousins of Brussels, who won $255. She chose envelope #42 and the King of hearts was revealed. The ace is still hiding and the estimated jackpot will be $3,100 this week. Four Comrades travelled to London to compete in Provincial Darts last week. They advanced from the district competition, held at the Brussels Branch in April. Eric Ross, Lisa Glanville and Ron and Daisy Schmidt both had good days, but did not win provincial honours. Congratulations to the four Comrades. It was Brussels Ball Day on Saturday and the Branch provided burgers and dogs for the Tigers' refreshment booth during the later day and night. Comrade Andy Overholt with help from his friend and wife Sarah looked after the event. We thank them for a job well done. Sunday it was the fish fry crew in action. Deb Cann and Jo -Ann McDonald prepared the fish for the group. Heading to Atwood and the Presbyterian Church to feed the nearly 250 were Comrades Eric Ross, Deb Ross, Sharon Robbins, Judy Lee and Catrina Josling. Good job folks! Final countdown As part of the Brussels Lions Club's annual elimination draw, local musician Eric Ethridge took to the stage to perform for the crowd. (Hannah Dickie photo) vendor chose to be outside during the opening day, however, Stephenson said that if many more vendors begin exhibiting at the market, some may need to be outside. The returning vendors, Stephenson said, commented that the crowds were good, adding that they saw more people come in later in the day than they had in previous years when the market was located on main street. "[At the previous location], the crowds seemed to disperse in the afternoon, but we had people coming in at 5 and 5:30 p.m.," she said. The new home for the market worked well, Stephenson said, adding she and Four Winds Administrator Barb Terpstra had laid out the zones for the vendors, put vendor names on the spaces and everything ran smoothly. She said the space is equipped with ample electrical outlets and extra lights to accommodate the indoor market. While Onn performed during the first week of the event, Stephenson said the group has many more musical groups lined up including the Mitchell Legion Band and the Huron County Cloggers, as well as more musicians who have yet to be confirmed. "We will have music scheduled every week," she said. The market runs every Friday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. until mid- October. For more information, contact Stephenson at 226-889- 2272.
