Taste of Huron relaunches with culinary tours
Lots to see, eat and drink
After a short hiatus, Taste of Huron is back as a Community Futures Huron project and
recently treated dignitaries and journalists to a tour of what the company will offer, including
culinary tours through the county. Above, one of the groups took in Shop Bike Coffee Roasters
in Bayfield as one of the tour's stops. (Shawn Loughlin photo)

As part of its official relaunch
earlier this month, the Taste of
Huron hosted two special tours last
week showing off some of the best
food in the county.
The established brand was
relaunched on May 1 with the help
of Community Futures Huron and
will now include "Taste Your Own
Adventure" tours, guided tours and
contests, as well as a revamped
website at tasteofhuron.com.
On Friday, The Citizen was part of
a tour of the northern and central
portions of the county and some of
the area's essential food stops. Three
limousines made their way through
the county making 11 stops along
the way.
The first stop was the Port Albert
General Store, which became
famous when owner Steve Buchanan
pushed back against the Provincial
Liberal government and Premier
Kathleen Wynne by banning her
from the store. He said he would
have to close the store in the winter
months due to the passing of Bill
148, which increased the minimum
wage.
Buchanan said that he is planning
an expansion of the store, which is
already known for its pizza, to
include a restaurant and pub that will
utilize fresh, local ingredients.
On the tour, they served a
vegetarian ravioli with local

asparagus, mushrooms and

The tour then made three stops in
Blyth, trying salads and baked goods
at Queens Bakery and the breakfast
perogies at Part II Bistro before
heading to Blyth Cowbell Brewing
Company for a glass of its best-
selling Shindig lager.
The group then stopped at Beach
Street Station in Goderich, which
only just opened a few years ago,
where the choice was perch and
chips, a turkey sandwich or grilled
cheese and tomato soup.
Adam Marshall, Vice -President of
Operations for the restaurant, said
that the menu does its best to utilize
local producers of meat and produce,
including the community supported
agriculture operation, Firmly
Rooted.
From there, the group then made
its way to Cait's Cafe in Goderich
for some of its freshly -made pastries
and then to Square Brew, which had
recently made a name for itself on
the craft beer scene.
The final Goderich-area stop was
Maitland Market and Supply, the
newly -established organic farmers'
market just east of Goderich on
Hwy. 8.
The building, which used to be a
veterinarian's office, is now home to
a market and farm which grows its
own produce and sells products from
other local producers as well.
After a quick stop at Bayfield
Berry Farm to try its new varieties of
cider blends, which can now be
purchased in take -away, three -litre
boxes, the tour ended at Bayfield's
Shop Bike Coffee Roasters, one of
the county's biggest success stories
of recent years.
