The Citizen, 2018-5-24, Page 20PAGE 20. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, MAY 24, 2018. County to introduce arts and culture grant program Huron County Council is still unsure about supporting the St. Joseph's Kingsbridge Community project. At council's May 16 committee of the whole meeting, Cultural Development Officer Rick Sickinger outlined several possible avenues for cultural funding that could be made available to the project. However, he stopped short of suggesting that the county exempt the project from property taxes for several years, which was what had been requested by organizers several months ago. Sickinger told council that he hopes to establish a new funding program for tourism, arts and culture that would be based on the Huron Heritage Fund model. Projects and organizations, he said, could apply for funding and approval would be subject to review by a committee put in place with ultimate approval by council. The grant program, which is outlined in the county's Tourism, Arts and Culture Strategy, should be in place in 2019. Sickinger also said that the county would assist in marketing the centre through the Ontario's West Coast website and social media feeds. In addition, the county is planning on partnering business centre to provide training on multi -medium marketing. In addition, Sickinger said he would be working on nominating the project for a Governor General's History Award for Excellence in Community Programming. Huron County, he said, has been successful in its two past nominations for the award, which were the plays with a local small Narcisse and The Great Lakes Storm of 1913. Huron East Deputy -Mayor Joe Steffler, however, wasn't content with Sickinger's recommendations, saying that council should commit $3,500 to the project before the new funding model is in place next year. Council, however, wasn't inclined to agree and tabled the motion for further discussion.
