Worth driving for The Blyth United Church Women held their annual drive- thru lunch on Thursday, which brought plenty of people from the community to the church for a home -cooked meal. Here, Brenda Brooks, right, served up lunch to Blyth's Graham Jackson. (Denny Scott photo) Sheep Club holds first meeting By Evy Verschaeve The inaugural potluck meeting for the South Huron 4-H Sheep Club's 2018 season was held at 6 p.m. on May 6. Members of all ages had met with their families at the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) office in Clinton. They mingled and conversed amongst themselves and filled out questionnaires and club forms as they waited for the food to be served. Soon, the turkey had been carved and Don Pullen had led the group in grace, signaling for the members to head to the front and serve themselves, followed by parents and adults. After dinner, a thank you card for Doug and Les Coleman was passed around and signed by the members as a token of thanks for the donation of the turkey. By now, the meeting had been officially started with the 4-H pledge. We went around the room and introduced ourselves, before discovering that there was a friend of 4-H amongst us, Doug Kennedy. Doug often helps out the club before shows by shearing our lambs. He told a few stories about his trip to New Zealand and his experience at a sheep shearing competition. A few more informational papers later and the club was ready for the highlight of the night, election time. Eventually, the board of directors for the 2018 club had been set; with Grace Hallahan as president, Evy Verschaeve as vice president, Amanda Bos as the secretary, and Rachel Bos with Evy Verschaeve both taking on the press reporter position. As usual, Deb Falconer and Florence Pullen will be the treasurers for the year. As well, Evan Krebs is the club's youth leader for the year. Next, the club leaders gave us some important dates, including the judging competition, Go for the Gold competition, and our shows in which we will be competing in with our sheep. Afterwards, the members suggested topics that they would like to learn about in the upcoming year. Some suggestions we received included touring Green's Meat Market in Wingham, visiting Cat Laxton and her sheep dogs, and going to the Holstein Rodeo to watch the sheep -shearing competition. With many ideas, members could not wait for their next meeting. The tentative date for the second meeting of the South Huron Sheep Club is May 27. The members will be visiting Parsons' sheep farm and touring their operation.
