Mark Royall Huron Chapel Evangelical Missionary Church, Auburn I was sitting in my big comfy chair last Thursday looking out our large picture window when suddenly, I noticed some action happening out in our backyard. A squirrel went for it. He made this dramatic leap from one tree in our back yard to another. There was this moment in his sensational jump when time seem to stop and he was stuck in mid-air. I can still see that freeze-frame moment as the squirrel with his eyes focused forward, his tail hanging loosely stretched his feet out ready to grab a branch on the other tree. It seemed to last a minute. This squirrel took a huge risk. I sat there thinking to myself, "do squirrels become afraid like we do?" When the squirrel was out there in mid-air between the two trees did he say to himself, "What was I thinking? Why did I ever take this risk?" I think our whole life can be likened to a "jump" where we leave Health Unit warns of discarded needles It's the time of year for increased outdoor activities. The Huron County Health Unit reminds people to be careful if they come across discarded needles or other sharp objects on beaches, parks or other recreational areas. "While the risk of being infected with a disease can be low, it is important that people know what to do if they come across a sharp object," says Michelle Carter, Public Health Nurse. Sharp objects, such as used needles, glass, razor blades or any item that could cut skin should be handled carefully. Parents should make sure children understand that: • A child should never touch any needle. Tell them that used needles can be dangerous and might make them sick • If children see a needle, they should tell an adult where the needle is • If a child is poked by a needle, they should tell someone right away. The child will need to see a healthcare provider immediately. Adults can safely pick up a sharp object by obtaining a free sharps container if they find a needle. Call the Health Unit at 519-482-3416 (1- 877-837-6143) or after hours at 519- 482-7077 to ask where in your community you can get a sharps container and where you can take it after you have put the sharp object in. If that is not possible, bring a non- breakable, puncture proof container with a screw-top lid to where the sharp object is. Take the container to the site recommended by the health unit. If you have been scratched, poked or cut by a discarded sharp object, let the cut bleed freely. Wash the area well with soap and water. Afterwards, apply an antiseptic like rubbing alcohol or peroxide. Follow up with a healthcare provider immediately. For more information, visit h uronhealthunit. ca/needles. Like all health units in Ontario, the Huron County Health Unit offers a needle exchange program with community partners in the county. We leave the safety of our mother's womb and for years we are out there hanging, hoping we will land safely in the grave. It can be so scary sometimes. This is probably why God says to us, "Do not be afraid," 365 times in the Bible; one for each day of the year we are out there hanging... being afraid. So let me share with you today some of God's own words to you, telling you "not be afraid" even when life's circumstances are telling you to be: "So be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid and do not panic before them. For the Lord your God will personally go ahead of you. He will neither fail you nor abandon you" Deuteronomy 31:6 "I am leaving you with a gift peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand" Isaiah 41:10 In case you were wondering, the squirrel landed safely in the other tree. A lot of branches where heaving up and down as he landed but he held on and was safe. You will land safely too when you actively and sincerely place your trust in the God of all creation. As I seek God in worship at our church, or in my daily morning time with Him or when I hear the stories of how God is working from my fellow pastors in my weekly mentoring group, I am always reminded, God is in control. I do not have to be afraid. I am going to make this jump because He is with me. The Regional Ministry of Hope Everyone Welcome!
