The Citizen
Five nonagenarians who attended
Grade 1 together at USS #3 near
Molesworth gathered for their semi-
annual meeting last Friday in
Brussels, sharing stories of their
lives, their descendants, their
neighbours and reminiscing about
the past.
The group has been meeting for
more than 35 years, having
started their spring and fall get-
togethers after a school reunion in
the 1980s.
The reunions were in recent years
to JR's Restaurant in Brussels as
Neil Schade, a resident of Huronlea,
lives in the village.
Joining Schade at the restaurant
were Bernice Barja of Mitchell,
Betty Dippel of Listowel, Edna
Culbert of Kincardine and Helen
Cullen of Listowel.
Absent from the meeting were
Grade 1 students Eric Coates who

At the Branch
There's something about the days
of spring that remind us that each
day is special. Perhaps it's the many
shades of green that put life and
growth at the forefront. The circle of
life is obvious as things wither and
die and now the miracle of spring
pops.
For me, the first sighting of marsh

Ace is still at large
By Jo -Ann McDonald
The week at Brussels Legion
Branch began with the Lions Club
hosting its early May meeting. They
enjoyed a ham and scalloped potato
dinner before the meeting. The
dinner was served by Judy Lee and
Jo -Ann McDonald.
The Branch was a busy place on
Friday hosting the celebration of life
for Mitch Blake. Over 200 shared
their time with the family expressing
condolences and sharing stories of
Mitch. Our sympathy is extended to
the Blake family.
The Branch thanks the many
helping hands in the preparation
making and serving of the luncheon
at the Branch. There were 16
Comrades and friends of the Branch
who offered to help.
The Catch the Ace draw was held
Friday evening with Comrades
Sandra Josling Brown, Catrina
Josling and Jo -Ann McDonald in
charge. The lucky winner was Perry
Pearce winning $222. He chose
envelope number 17 and found the
king of spades. Congratulations!
The ace is still hiding.
This weekend will have karaoke

squirrels are learning the ropes and
life is shimmering.
The Four Winds Barn has a new
venture: the site of the Brussels
Farmers' Market is now in the lower
level of the barn. Many of last year's
vendors are returning and several
new ones have signed up. Be sure to
check it out each Friday from now
until October. As locals, we need to
support any new (or old) business
venture in our locality, it is up to
each of us to support as able as
support will determine our future.
I always like it when it is reported
that survey results tell what you

passed away several years ago and

more recently.
The school was known as "The
Little College" in a tongue-in-cheek
way thanks to there being a larger
school in Molesworth.
USS #3 was built in 1879 and
closed in 1953, boasting as many as
35 students at one time and 30
students when Schade and his
friends were in Grade 1.
The group gets together to talk
about "normal things" as Helen
explained. The meetings were set up
by Neil originally, who is fiercely
proud of the company he keeps,
according to Betty.
"Helen and I went to [Huronleal to
visit him once and he stopped
everyone we ran into and told them
we went to school together," she said
with a laugh.
Schade, formerly a pilot, said he
was happy to meet with the four
women and showed off some
hardware he had received from the
Canadian Warplace Heritage Musem
for his efforts in restoring and
honouring Lancaster aircrafts. He
was happy to share his experiences
with the plane with The Citizen
briefly before turning his attention to
the group, saying Lancasters are
unmistakable in every aspect, but
especially so when it comes to the
sound.
"Nothing sounds like a Lancaster,"
he said. "When those four engines
are open, nothing in the world
sounds like that"
