the show. Be sure to read the rules very carefully online by visiting the website at
https://www.westernfairdistrict.com/western-fair/rise-2-fame Registration must be completed
online on the Western Fair site before Aug. 8.
Winners go on to perform at the Western Fair — a 37 -year tradition that has touched the lives of
thousands of talented youngsters from across the province. The Western Fair Rise2Fame
Youth Talent Search, along with the preliminaries, has been the start to many careers in the
arts and continues to encourage young people to pursue their talents, by giving them a chance
to perform in front of a live audience.
Remember, Bayfield's preliminary contest is one of the last before this year's Western Fair.
Categories of competition are (1) Vocal Solo; (2) Instrumental Solo; (3) Dance Solo; (4) Dance
Group; (5) Vocal and/or Instrumental Group including bands; (6) Variety Solo and (7) Variety
Group. Individuals can compete more than once in different categories.
Winners of the Bayfield preliminary Rise2Fame contest will perform again at the Western Fair
on the Anne Eadie Stage during the first two weeks of September. At the Western Fair
competition there are big cash prizes and trophies for final winners. The Junior Winner in 2015
at the Western Fair was a Huron County dancer and that was not the first time that Huron
County kids have made it to the finals! A number of local youth who have performed in this
competition in the past have gone on to careers in music and the arts.
But you can't win if you don't enter the preliminary in Bayfield. Rise2Fame contestants, along
with one adult, get free admission to the fair. So get registered and start practicing! Then bring
your dancing shoes, instrument or vocals and come showcase your talent at the Fair!
Entries for all preliminaries can be made on-line at http://www.westernfairdistrict.com/western-

LAND MANAGEMENT MIKE TO BE
HELD AT LINFIELD WILDLIFE AREA
On Sunday June 24, the Bayfield River Valley Trail Association (BRVTA) will host a "Land
Management Experience" at the Linfield Wildlife Area.
Starting at 2 p.m., join members of the BRVTA for a walk with Ausable Bayfield Conservation
Authority (ABCA) Land Management Supervisor Kate Monk to learn how water and soil
resources and wildlife habitat will be preserved at the Linfield Wildlife Area, one of the newest
conservation lands in the ABCA watersheds.
This property was in the Linfield family for several generations and lovingly cared for and
enhanced during this time by the family. Since the donation of the property, Monk has been the
lead manager to continue to manage the property in an environmentally responsible way. The
property is about 95 acres in size, including 70 acres of active farm land and 25 acres of
natural areas. Hiking, bird -watching, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and fishing are
permitted activities in the wildlife area. ABCA intends to develop additional windbreaks,
grassed waterways and tree planting in the coming years.
The hike will be approximately 2 KMs on a primitive, natural surface, trail through mature
woodlot and wind breaks. The trail can be quite wet, depending on weather conditions and
there may possibly be some poison ivy. The Difficulty Level is Level 2 with uneven trail. The
trail is used all year for walking, bird watching and snow shoeing. Pets are requested to be kept
on leash.
It is suggested that participants wear sturdy walking or hiking shoes, long pants and insect
repellant. They are encouraged to bring a refillable water container plus a tree or birding
identification book.
The Linfield Wildlife Area is located west of the Pavilion Road and Goshen Line intersection,
southwest of Varna and north of Zurich.

Bayfield is officially on the map for kindness. On June 9 and 16th, area residents andf summer cottagers came
to paint messages on rocks, some with their children and grandchildren. Over 70 colorful rocks were adorned
with inspiring, heartfelt messages. Some of the rocks were taken home to be given away or hidden in the area
and some were placed around the front of the library to be found by visitors and pedestrians. Organizers
would like to send a special shout out to the Bayfield Public Library who provided the space for this activity.
This project reminds us that even one small kind word can change a person's life. Be the Change. Stay tuned
for more kindness projects by Open Hearts of Bayfield. (Submitted photo)

Karsten Stryker, Joshua LeBlanc -Demers and Ben Luelo are senior students at St. Anne's
Catholic Secondary School and they love Jazz. In September of 2017 they kicked off the
school year by opening the International Plowing Match that brought a ton of opportunities their
way.
The group began practicing together for around five hours a week and built a solid two -hour
set. "Jazz Cubed" has since become an in -demand group on the Huron -County music scene
having performed at everything from the Fanshawe College North Graduation to a variety of
restaurants and concerts over the past year. In addition to their public performances in the
area, the band also received Gold Standing at Music Fest Regionals and a Silver Standing at
MusicFest Nationals at the University of Toronto in May. They also performed an invite -only set
at The Rex Jazz Bar in Toronto as part of the National Youth Jazz Series. This series featured
the best student jazz bands from across the country.
"A group trio of this calibre does not come around very often - success in music is all about
commitment, practice and hard work - these guys have definitely put in the time, they've
formed a band, learned about playing live and have listened to the feedback that they have got
from other professionals along the way. This is a special group of students," said Josh Geddis,
music teacher at St. Anne's.
The group recently went into the studio to record a full-length album while on a school music
trip to Chicago. The band recorded eight songs at the Legendary Chicago Recording Company
with Grammy winning engineer Mat Lejeune. The CRC (Chicago Recording Company) is
responsible for recording albums by artist like Coldplay, Lady Gaga and Buddy Guy. The

Back by popular demand, "The Dreamboats" will be
performing at the Bayfield Town Hall on Thursday,
June 28. They were here last July to help Michael's
Pharmacy celebrate their 10th anniversary in
Bayfield. Kelsey Johnston, a Michael's Pharmacy
employee, organized the sold -out concert as a
fundraiser for the Bayfield Town Hall. This year,
Johnston also assisted the Bayfield Town Hall
Heritage Society with the arrangements for the return
of this amazing, high energy Rock N' Roll group.
The Dreamboats hail from Mississauga, where they
were recently presented with the MARTY Award for
Best Emerging Music Group from the Mississauga
Arts Council. In keeping with the era in which they
have musically immersed themselves, the majority
go by stage names: Sir Ritchie Hummins, lead
vocals, guitar; Fliggers B. Lewis, lead vocals, bass
guitar; Matt Best, lead guitar, vocals; and Johnny G.
Wiz, drums and vocals.
The Dreamboats specialize in cover music from
1955-65 but also write and perform their own music
created in the style of these early decades. These
high energy musicians delight audiences with great
toe tappin', hand clappin', sing -a -long tunes touching
on many of the eras favorites including, Roy

For as long as I can remember I have wanted to either build a house or renovate an existing one. When I was a kid one of my
favorite free time activities was designing floor plans. Fast forward to present day and pretty much the only channel I watch is
HGTV. So the prospect of returning to my childhood home to give it some upgrades has been on my radar pretty much since
the day I moved out about 30 years ago. Finally this March we took the first steps, starting on an electrical upgrade, and now
probably the biggest job is well underway - we're having a kitchen put in.

We have been so fortunate to find some excellent trades that have all shared in our vision of modernizing while maintaining the
integrity and character of our 123 year old Victorian home. They say she's got very good bones! I have learned that she is a
three brick house. Built by my Scottish ancestors in 1895-96 they obviously hailed from some very strong stock as they didn't
fuss about things like insulation. Hopefully winter 2018 will be the last that I can see my breath as I work away on a puzzle at
the kitchen table!
Construction isn't all about the pretty stuff - a lot goes on behind the walls that is more important (Bryan Baeumler taught me
that) so I am revelling in each step - from demo - to electrical and plumbing - to drywall and mudding but I am looking forward
to the pretty stuff enjoying shopping for everything from drawer handles to the farmhouse sink!
To date I feel like I have stepped out of reality and entered one of my beloved home renovation programs. The whole process

is a bit surreal and I have to keep reminding myself that this is actually happening. If all goes as planned we should have a
finished kitchen by Labour Day when I fully intend to host a one woman reveal where I walk into the room and say OH MY GOSH repeatedly as I look
around -just like they do on TV! - Melody
Ideas and contributions to the Bayfield Breeze are always welcome.
