The Bayfield Relics have home ice advantage against the Blyth Old Dogs tonight (Feb. 28) at 8:30 p.m. The Bayfield Relics are an Oldtimers Hockey Team that was founded in 1987. Their home ice is the Bayfield Arena. The Relics play their season schedule versus teams from Huron and Middlesex Counties. The BCH Atoms, ages 9 to 11 years, also play in the Bayfield Arena and invite members of the community to come out and cheer them on. They play tonight (Feb. 28) versus Walkerton staring at 7 p.m. Then on Thursday, March 1, the Bayfield 50+ will take on Exeter at 8 p.m. Please note that the Bayfield Arena Community Partners Association (BACPA) will once again be El 1/18 6/11/2019 Week 09 Issue 451 supported these vulnerable creatures know how their contributions are making a difference. Since July of 2016, the group has trapped 38 felines as part of the Trap, Neuter and Release (TNR) program. From this total, 18 were adopted and 14 were released back on Main Street, two were surrendered to the Humane Society, two are being cared for at a cat sanctuary and one was euthanized due to illness. The cats are taken to EVAH in London, ON for neutering. They also receive a rabies vaccine, are de -wormed, given a flea treatment and receive other vaccinations as necessary plus antibiotics if needed. Currently this costs on average $90 per cat. Females are slightly more expensive to neuter than males. This does not include the transportation costs of volunteer drivers. These costs are totally born by donations as the volunteers receive no money from the municipality. As spring is almost here, the volunteers are gearing up for kitten season and they are hoping that people may once again find it in their hearts to make a donation to the Bayfield Forgotten Felines TNR program. Currently an individual has come forward to generously match all donations up to $1,000. This support would go a long way to help the village's forgotten felines. Financial contributions may be made at Shop Bike Coffee on Main Street. Anyone who might also consider adopting a cat should contact the Bayfield Breeze and your contact information will be passed on to volunteers. ICE FLOW VIDEO GOES VIRAL The ice broke up on the Bayfield River on Feb. 20 and Elaine Coombs just happened to be at the marina at the right time to capture it on video. "Last Tuesday, I went down to the marina and saw all the ice so I videoed for a bit and then all of a sudden the whole river started to move so I captured that on video too. The next day I put it on my business Facebook page for my clients to see and much to my surprise it went viral!" Coombs, a sales representative with Remax Reliable Reality. According to Coombs, as of the afternoon of Feb. 24 the video had been viewed almost 70,000 times and the post had reached 106,000 people and was shared 1,500 times. Coombs was surprised that people would find an ice flow quite so interesting although she did not that it was quite amazing to see in person. The ultimate goal of this annual program, that will begin at 2 p.m., is best expressed in its Mission Statement: "Empowering Christians to pursue Justice, Peace and Reconciliation by standing together in prayer and action" Each year a country is chosen and a service written to address their concerns and challenges. This year people will learn about Suriname, a small country in South America. The theme chosen by the women of Suriname for the World Day of Prayer Service is "All God's Creation is Very Good" and highlights environmental issues. Locally, the Church on the Way, St. Andrew's United and Trinity Anglican churches will have readers participating. Light refreshments will be served following the service. SMOKE FREE MOVIES In this year's Academy Awards, 19 of the 22 movies nominated in a major category contains scenes with smoking. Smoking in movies, especially youth -rated movies, is a health concern. According to the World Health Organization, movies showing use of tobacco products have enticed millions of youth worldwide to start smoking. In Ontario it's estimated that at least 185,000 children and teens will start smoking from exposure to onscreen smoking. "Movies remain one of the last ways the tobacco industry can advertise their products to children and youth," said Jacquie Uprichard, Public Health promoter with the Huron County Health Unit. "Hollywood plays an important role in shaping popular culture and movies tend to glamorize tobacco use instead of showing the negative health consequences of its use, or the struggle with addiction that many tobacco users face." The Smoke -Free Movies initiative, however, would mean in Ontario any new films that showed smoking would be given an 18A rating. "The evidence is clear," said Uprichard. "The more kids and teens see smoking in movies, the more likely they are to start. There are many ways to get involved and we encourage the community to learn more about the influence of tobacco in movies and to take action to protect our kids. It's time to help Oscar quit smoking!" International Week of Action is an annual event leading up to the Oscars that brings together members of the smoke-free movies action networks from around the world to raise awareness on this issue. cc.villageofbayfield.com/Members/BayfieldBreezelWeek09lssue451/tabid/872/Default.aspx 6/18 6/11/2019 Week 09 Issue 451 Members of the Bayfield Ukuele Society provided music at the Family Day celebrations. The book fair grew out of an idea put forward by the late Paul Carroll, local historian and author, to bring together the many history authors in Huron County. The idea was to share the many great stories about Huron's history with the public while at the same time providing an opportunity for the history authors and researchers from different parts of the County to get together and talk about their work and projects. A panel discussion about the process behind historical fiction in Huron County guided by a panel of professional directors, authors, actors, playwrights and educators will lead up to the book fair on March 22. cc.villageofbayfield.com/Members/BayfieldBreezelWeek09lssue451/tabid/872/Default.aspx 7/18 6/11/2019 Week 09 Issue 451 Dog Man came to the Power Off event thanks to The Village Bookshop and he brought with him Comic Creator books so that all the kids that visited could create their very own Dog Man comic! The book fair will include a dozen local history authors speaking about their books and research in the Museum's auditorium, as well as information sessions on Huron County services and tools for researchers including archives research and the digitized newspaper portal. Recognizing that Huron County has many talented writers working and publishing in other genres, the organizers want to expand the book fair beyond local history by extending an invitation to all Huron County authors with published work to have a table set-up with their books for sale. Times for the sale are Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, from noon to 4 p.m. Interested authors can contact Erin Samuell, Business Development manager at esamuell@huroncounty.ca. I worked with Jan in the late 80s at the Clinton News -Record. She was in the advertising department while I worked in editorial. She and her husband moved to Northern Ontario some time ago and through the powers of social media we were able to reconnect on Facebook. The couple did something really fun to celebrate our Olympic athletes competing at the recent games held in South Korea and I think it deserves a mention. Each time a Canadian medaled, no matter whether it was a bronze, silver or gold, they hung a Canadian Flag up along the front of their property. Our athletes were so successful that they had to go out twice and purchase more flags! What a wonderful tribute to our athletes who so proudly represented our country and brought home 29 medals. Our best finish ever! Congratulations to our athletes, those who medaled, those who recorded their own personal bests and those who gave it their all and lived out a dream. You are all winners to me and to folks like the Gibsons too! - Melody Ideas and contributions to the Bayfield Breeze are always welcome. Deadlines for submissions are Sundays at 4 p.m. Please email me at bayfield.breeze@villageofbayfield.com or call 519-525-3830. cc.villageofbayfield.com/Members/BayfieldBreezelWeek09lssue451/tabid/872/Default.aspx 17/18 6/11/2019 Week 09 Issue 451 / tAYFIELD BREEZE 1j Q SHARE 0 ®,., SICK WP F0Ft BAYFIELDI BREEZE L L I C K HEIR E.
