Cover up - wear a hat to keep you warm and cover your head. Consider wearing a mask or balaclava to protect your face from sun and wind. The award-winning not-for-profit theatre company has been steadily growing its training offerings for young performers over the past several years including launching the now popular Youth Musical Theatre Program, which will return for a third year. "We are consistently astounded by the talent and passion we've seen from aspiring young artists across the province. As a professional company, we feel a responsibility to develop the artists of tomorrow," said Alex Mustakas, Artistic director of Drayton Entertainment. "Our Youth Musical Theatre Program sessions and Children's Chorus opportunities help to prepare young talent for future success and give them an inside glimpse into industry expectations." Auditions will be held in three cities during the month of February: Saturday, Feb. 10 in Penetanguishene, Sunday, Feb. 11 in Grand Bend and Sunday, Feb. 25 in Cambridge. These auditions will be used to determine participants for both the Youth Musical Theatre Programs (YMTP) and Children's Choruses. Young performers must sign up in advance. The YMTP is designed to cultivate community and collaboration, ignite imagination, boost confidence and develop a deeper appreciation for live performance. Guided by passionate theatre professionals, participants study aspects of singing, dancing, acting and technical theatre while meeting new friends with similar interests. 2018 offerings include weeklong training sessions in: Cambridge - Aug. 20-24 for ages eight to 12 and Aug. 27-31 for ages 13-18 and Penetanguishene — Aug. 13-17 for ages 10- 18. There is a special program in Grand Bend that offers participants ages nine to 15 the opportunity to hone their skills with industry professionals during the training week and then put those skills to the test performing in two rotating teams in the Drayton Entertainment production of Disney's "The Little Mermaid", alongside professional performers in the lead roles. Youth performers cast in the Grand Bend program must be available for the training week from July 23-27 and performances from Aug. 6 to Sept. 2. Last year, Drayton Entertainment expanded the YMTP to offer a more comprehensive option; the Pre -Professional Production Program gives teen performers hands-on insight into how a musical is cast, rehearsed and performed while they work with a professional creative team to create a concert version of a musical culminating in a performance. The 2018 Pre -Professional Production is "Seussical Jr.", a musical based on the famous stories of Dr. Seuss. This two- week session will take place in Cambridge from Aug. 21-31 for ages 13-18. Associate Artistic Director David Connolly will direct and choreograph the production. Connolly's impressive r6sum6 includes work on major musicals like the pre -Broadway production of "First Wives Club" in Chicago and numerous Drayton Entertainment productions like "Mamma Mia!" and the popular panto productions. More information about the YMTP, including tuition costs and audition requirements, is available at www.youthmusicaltheatreprogram.com. The Children's Chorus Program offers young performers the opportunity to audition for child ensemble roles in the company's family panto productions and select musicals alongside professional performers in the lead roles. In the Penetanguishene area, young performers ages nine to 15 may audition for children's chorus roles in "Cinderella: The Panto", which will be on stage at King's Wharf Theatre from June 6-30. Youth cast in the production will be divided into teams and will perform in the show on a rotating schedule. Auditions will be held on Saturday, Feb. 10. For the second time this month, a local family has come forward to invest in the long-term needs of their community Wishing to remain anonymous at this time, a resident of Exeter has pledged a new family fund dedicated to supporting the long-term needs of South Huron. Reflecting the flexible giving options available through the South Huron Community Fund, the donor in this case has chosen to donate $1,000 annually for 10 years to create a family fund. "This person is investing back into their home community," said Tom Pout, chair of the South Huron Community Fund (SHCF). "By setting up an annual contribution system, our organization was able to help this individual reach their charitable goal." "When this family fund is established, it will begin to yield annual grants that will be disbursed by a committee of volunteers to support local priorities," added Prout. "Establishing a family legacy with our organization is easy and can be set up to benefit a specific charitable cause or the general fund supporting priorities in our community." Whether the priorities relate to the arts or the environment, to youth or the elderly, the SHCF is dedicated to supporting the long-term needs of our region. Funds raised create a permanent endowment that generates annual grants for local charitable organizations. A community volunteer committee is expected to issue the fund's first series of grants in the fall of 2018. Due to their experience, commitment to projects in South Huron and for administration efficiency, the SHCF operates as part of the Grand Bend Community Foundation, which is a registered charity that can issue tax- deductible receipts to donors. Grant applications are available on the Grand Bend Community Foundation website at grand bendcommunityfoundation.ca. To learn more about our work, like us on Facebook @SouthHuronCommunityFund.
