The petition entitled, "Preserve Bayfield, Ontario's heritage culture - say "NO" to corporate encroachment" that will be sent to the CAO of the Municipality of Bluewater Kyle Pratt. It was launched midday on July 11 and as of publishing time had generated 503 signatures. For anyone interested in viewing the petition please visit: www.change.org. BACP AGM The Bayfield Arena Community Partners Association (BACPA) will be holding their Annual General Meeting on Aug. 5. All are welcome to come hear the 2016 results of how the BACPA are doing regarding their mandate to increase usage and revenue of the Bayfield Community Complex. (Photo by Melody Falconer -Pounder) After 11 years at the helm of the Glee Sisters Choir, Leslie Bella is hanging up her baton Since she arrived in Huron County in 2005, Bella has been helping area residents to find their musical voices. She moved to Bayfield from St. John's, Newfoundland after retiring from Memorial University where she was a Professor of Social Work. A talented musician who plays several instruments, Bella has always had a love of choral music. As she got to know people in her new home, she encountered many women who shared her love of music, but didn't feel they had the talent or confidence to 'sing out loud'. So, 11 years ago, she began inviting women to come together to sing. They started in each other's living rooms but as more and more women joined a move was made to a local church which allows the Glees to use the space on Friday afternoons. The Glees remain a choir that doesn't how auditions - in other words, no one who wishes to participate has to 'prove' their singing skills. All who wish to take part are welcome to join. Through her organizational skills, Bella has developed a musical sisterhood in which members not only support the community but freely support each other through joyful, creative self- expression. Choir members have been encouraged to expand their musical abilities by participating in arranging and directing pieces, adding various instruments and percussion and singing solos. PIONEER PARK FUN RACE The 31st annual Pioneer Park 5 KM Fun Race is approaching fast with the date set for Monday, Aug. 7. Participants can run, walk or wheel. The entry fee remains at $5 per person. Spectators are always welcome to come out and cheer on the participants and this is also a dog friendly event. All proceeds from the event go to Pioneer Park to help with its yearly upkeep. Registration takes place in Pioneer Park for one hour starting at 8:30 a.m. Walkers depart at 9:30 a.m. and everyone else goes at 10 a.m. or shortly after. Please be aware that Provincial law dictates that a helmet is required for all bikers under the age of 18 years. "So please come out for a coffee, a visit with some old friends, meet some new ones and cheer on the racers," said Anne Laudenbach, event organizer. "This is truly a cherished community tradition - thanks to all the racers who participate and the race crew in particular who make this event happen!" CELTIC ROOTS Due to a special arrangement with the Goderich Celtic Roots Festival, we are able to see one of their award winning acts here in Bayfield each year, hosted by the Bayfield Town Hall Heritage Society. This year, this Celtic Concert will take place on Aug. 7, the Civic Holiday Monday, and will feature Matthew Byrne. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Bayfield Town Hall. Born into a family of Newfoundland music makers, Byrne's repertoire is heavily influenced by that unique musical lineage — the weaving of a great story with a beautiful melody — and he supports this tradition with powerful vocals, polished guitar work and a presence that fills the room. His repertoire transcends time and place and his live performance reminds listeners how satisfying traditional songs can be when stripped down to their basic elements. As well as providing encouragement and leadership to fledgling choir members, the Glees have been `paying it forward' by entertaining audiences around the county. (Photo by Judy Roth) Week 32 Issue 422 The Friday Gala is the perfect time to mingle with dealers and enjoy some wine and cheese from 6-9 p.m. Attendees will also get a head start on the stamping of their "Your Passport to Future Treasures" to be entered into a raffle for three awesome prize packages. In addition, visitors to the Gala should be on the look out for models dressed in fashions of yesterday. These gals will provide a sneak peak at what will be shared during a Vintage Clothing and Accessories Fashion Parade to be held on Sunday afternoon from 1-2 p.m. and sponsored by JMR Collections on Main Street. DEADLINE TO REGISTER FOR RISE2FANVIE APPROACHES The only Huron County preliminary competition to the Western Fair Talent Search takes place on Friday, Aug. 18 at the Bayfield Community Fair, upstairs in the Bayfield Community Centre. Junior competitions begin first at 7 p.m. with Youth competitions to follow. Check-in is at 6 p.m. This ensures that all registration documents are complete and that music can be lined up for the show. Be sure to read the rules very carefully online by visiting the website at http://www.westernfairdistrict.com/western-fair/rise-2-fame. Registration must be completed online on the Western Fair site before Aug. 7. There is also another option for an online video submission on the same site. Winners go on to perform at the Western Fair — a 35 -year tradition that has touched the lives of thousands of talented youngsters from across the province. The Western Fair Rise2Fame Youth Talent Search, along with the preliminaries, has been the start to many careers in the arts and continues to encourage young people to pursue their talents, by giving them a chance to perform in front of a live audience. Remember, Bayfield's preliminary contest is the only one in Huron County and one of the last before this year's Western Fair. BOOK SALE The Friends of the Bayfield Library (FOBL) will be hosting their annual Book Sale at the library. FOBL Members will be treated to a special preview sale on Friday, Aug. 18 from 1-5 p.m. Membership has its privileges. The public sale will be held on Aug. 19, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Aug. 20 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Proceeds from the sale will go to FOBL projects and programs. People can help the FOBL by donating gently used recent books, puzzles and games. Drop off times are between 1-5 p.m. only on Aug. 11, Aug. 15-16 due to space restrictions. BUTTERFLY RELEASE How many among us take notice of certain symbols that remind us of someone special who no longer walks the earth? Hearing the striking lilt of a birdcall, sighting a butterfly flitting by or spotting a feather on the ground are all fine examples of these signs. In recognition of these the Huron Hospice is holding an event in Pioneer Park on Aug. 27 that will allow community members to honor the memory of loved ones or beloved pets in a symbolic way at a Butterfly Release. The event will be held from 7-8 p.m. and will include a memorial service officiated by Eugene Dufour and the release of butterflies while a few pipers from the Celtic Blue Highlanders pipe. In 2015, the Junior Winner at the Western Fair was a Huron County dancer and that was not the first time that Huron County kids have made it to the finals! FISH FRY RECIPE FOR SUCCESS FOR KNOX PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH PHOTOS BY MELODY FALCONER -POUNDER Knox Presbyterian Church in Byafield held their annual Fish Fry this past Saturday at the Bayfield Community Centre. The Georgian Bay Whitefish was tasty, the wedge potatoes seasoned just right and the desserts amazing. A recipe for success once again and enjoyed by all who attended. Organizers would like to pass on their thanks to this amazing community for their continued support. Diners that came to partake in the Fish Fry were greeted by two convivial folks, Jan Sloane and Conrad Barth, at the front entrance to the Bayfield Community Centre. Camp takes place every Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. until Aug. 24th. The cost to attend is $5 per child each week or $7 for two or more children. All snacks and lunch are included in the price. Qualified counselors along with Leaders -in -Training lead the campers in songs, games, outdoor activities and crafts for a fun filled day. Registration for families has begun and will conclude on Aug. 18. This year the Salvation Army has volunteered to register the recipients and then prepare the backpacks. Another highlight honoring youth includes IPM 2017 hosting the first 4-H Invitational Beef and Sheep Show where over 150 youth will be participating. The annual Iceculture Wackabout Golf Tournament returns to the Bayview Golf Club on Friday, Sept. 15 with proceeds going to the Bayfield Area Family Health Team expansion project. The tournament was revived last year after a 15 -year break specifically to raise money for the new clinic. In 2016, 94 golfers participated and early indications are the 2017 event will attract a full house of 144 players. In the past, the four -person, scramble format was popular with all those who participated. Last but not least, IPM 2017 is honored to be able to fly a Canadian Flag over Tented City that was previously flown on the Peace Tower of Parliament Hill. The flag, fifteen feet wide and seven and a half feet tall, will be raised Wednesday, Sept. 6th prior to the Match, adding to the backdrop as Tented City is being constructed. IPM 2017 takes place Sept. 19-23 with advanced tickets being sold at every municipal office in Huron County for $15. Tickets will be available at the gates on the day of for $18 per person. HENSALL HALL The Taw Connors concert has been scheduled for the Hensall Heritage Hall on Sept. 23. In his show, Taw Connors takes to the stage in a tribute to his late father "Stompin' Tom" Connors. "Stompin' Tom" was a Canadian country and folk singer -songwriter who is credited with writing more than 300 songs in his lifetime. His music focused exclusively on the Canadian experience and hits such as'Bud the Spud', 'Sudbury Saturday Night' and 'The Hockey Song' made "Stompin' Tom" a national icon. Does anyone remember them? (Archives Code: PB10015 PC) Doug Darnbrough wrote in with some reminisces about Tom and Martha (Ritz) Bailey after seeing their photograph in Issue 416. He also shared some memories about some other Main Street characters. The following are his thoughts: "I remember Tom Bailey and his wife very well. In 1958-59 1 delivered the London Free Press to their home at that time which was the new Ritz Hotel. (The Virtural High School today.) The Free Press was five cents per weekday and a dime for Saturday... thirty-five cents a week. "Mr. Bailey had a large chicken coop directly behind the hotel and the chicken wire yard ran to the next street behind the Ritz. It did not seem out of place to raise chickens on main street Bayfield back then. "Across the road the Little Inn was the private residence of George Little who was the town cop. "From the front step of the Ritz you could hear Ernie Hovey, owner of Hovey's General Store and Post Office hand cancelling the mail. When the banging of his ink stained cancelling hammer stopped and it was finally quiet you knew he was about to open the wicket and at this point Ernie would hand the mail out the wicket to the same 10 or 12 people who waited every morning inside the post office for the wicket to open." PHOTOS BY JACK PAL The Bayfield Town Hall Heritage Society (BTHHS) hosted another tribute performance, on July 29. This time Southern Ontario artist, Marty Allen, helped those in attendance celebrate the music of the legendary Johnny Cash. Allen was named after the late Marty Robbins and weaned on Sun Record artists Elvis Presley and Cash. He believes that "Honky-tonk and Rockabilly music is as much about life as it is about music". "It was a simple sound, yet energetic and commanding," said Allen, who received his first guitar at the age of eight. Although not musicians themselves, his parents possessed a real love for music. "There was always music playing in the house and Sunday mornings we would hear the gospel music crackling from the hi-fi." Allen went on to form his own band, the Cadillac Cowboys, with Dave Tufford, electric guitar; Cory Richardson, upright bass; and Mike McDowell, drums.
