On Wednesday, March 2nd, 18 Home4Good volunteers will use the phones at the Virtual High School to phone everyone in the village to ask if they would use a local bus service or grocery shopping service if provided. Please answer the phone when it rings between 6-9 p.m. The call display will look like a Toronto number but will actually be from volunteers residing here in Bayfield. Home4Good will use your answers to develop more services for those residents who what to stay in the village as they get older. WORLD DAY OF PRAYER Trinity Anglican Church in Bayfield will host the World Day of Prayer service on the afternoon of March 5. The women of Cuba are the creators of this year's service that is open for both men and women to El 1/9 6/13/2019 Week 10 Issue 348 Blr ewa[er Area Family Health Team The Bluewater Area Family Hearth Team (BAFHT) clinic is expanding to meet the growing needs of its communities by constructing a new medical centre. The public is invited to hear about these plans and how they can help by attending an information night at the Zurich Community Centre on March 10 from 7-9 p.m. Project details will be shared at the meeting as the BAFHT medical centre will become a comprehensive health care hub and with more space and resources, will be able to: see more patients sooner, increase evening clinics, deliver more programs and provide a rewarding work environment that attracts and keeps quality health care professionals. This important project will help ensure the residents of Bluewater and surrounding communities have access to high quality primary and preventive care today, and in the future. Blraewa[er Area Family Heallh Team skinner attend. The theme of their service is "Receive children. Receive me." Rev. Elise Feltrin, of St. Andrew's United Church, will be the guest speaker sharing her experiences on a recent visit to Cuba. This interdenominational, ecumenical service will begin at 2 p.m. and is being held on a Saturday for the first time to encourage more people to attend. It is a family friendly service with special music for all ages to enjoy. The origins of World Day of Prayer date back to the 19th century when Christian women of the United States and Canada initiated a variety of cooperative activities in support of women's involvement in mission at home and in other parts of the world. These activities related to the following areas: concern for women and children, the role of prayer in mission work, a vision of Christian unity, study, the organization of interdenominational structures by women and world peace. In Canada, Presbyterian women called together representatives of women's missionary societies from five denominations in 1918 for united prayer and action. It organized the first national Day of Prayer in Canada on Jan. 9, 1920. This committee, which now has expanded to include 11 church partners is known today as the Women's Inter -Church Council of Canada. Starting in 1922 Canada adopted the same day and theme for the service as the U.S. Four years later, the women of North America distributed the worship service to many countries and partners in mission. The response worldwide was enthusiastic. By the beginning of 1927 the call to prayer that was issued was for a World Day of Prayer for Missions. The Women's Inter -Church Council of Canada continues to coordinate the World Day of Prayer in Canada and to speak to issues that concern women of faith across the country. SOUP ANDA MOVIE cc.villageofbayfield.com/Members/BayfieldBreezelWeekl Oissue348/tabid/767/Default.aspx 2/9 6/13/2019 Week 10 Issue 348 ARENA EARNS HEALTHY ItDS CO TY CHALLENGE GRANTS The Bayfield Arena Community Partners Association (BACPA) is pleased to announce that they have received two generous grants from the Huron County Health Unit program "Healthy Kids Community Challenge" for three new programs for families and youth. The successful applications were for Lacrosse, Family/Kids Zumba and Family/ Kids Yoga. Ron Keys, chair of the BACPA, said, "Family Zumba and Family Yoga will be led weekly by certified instructors and will be focused on a less intensive format with the intention of bringing kids and families together to promote and foster a healthy lifestyle in a fun affordable environment. It is hoped that Zumba and Yoga will begin as soon as possible so stay tuned!" Bonnie Baynham, project manager of Healthy Kids Community Challenge from the Huron County Health Unit, said, "The committee was very impressed with the partnerships, and all the great work you have done. We are going to enjoy watching Bayfield shine!" She added, "We are very grateful for all your work, as it certainly fits so well with the goals and objectives of Healthy Kids Community Challenge Huron. We are looking forward to our work together over the next couple years and beyond." In relations to the Lacrosse grant, Keys said, "Last summer the BACPA sponsored a three day clinic for kids to come and try out the game. This was a huge success. It was noticed that as this was the first time that kids had tried it there was a need for proper equipment geared to the sport for more kids to come and play without the expense. This grant money is going towards the purchase of such equipment for a loaning program so more kids can come out and try the sport, with the intention of starting up a team(s) that will play in a house league in the Strathroy and London area. Bayfield's own Toronto Rock Star Drew Candy will be involved again this year." Baynham also applauded the new Lacrosse program, "We love this one! It met the criteria that is laid out by the province, and we are very pleased with the sustainability of this program, and the free access to equipment for people in your community (and beyond)." BACPA became a not-for-profit in May 2015 that has enabled them to access available grants that are offered throughout the province. Municipality of Bluewater council originally approved the BACPA in June 2014 to market the Bayfield Arena and Community Centre for three years. With June 2017 fast approaching, this is another example of how a not-for-profit organization can help continue to dramatically improve a facilities usage and help to reduce the deficit, which was outlined in the BACPA's original business plan. According to the BACPA, the average weekly ice rentals are now at 30.25 hours per week. These numbers meet their original targets. BACPA has always stressed the importance of a year round facility, this grant will help with that vision. Since 2014, revenues and usage have continued to increase substantially. BACPA has worked with Bluewater, and has been supplied by the municipality, data on revenues and usage since the beginning with each year-end including full expense reports. The 2015 expenses will be available from the municipality on March 10th. Anyone who wishes to see any of this information and the current status of the facility are welcome to attend the BACPA Annual General Meeting on March 10th in the Bayfield Community Centre starting at 7:30 p.m. BLUEWATER AND CENTRAL HURON EXPLORE BEYOND THE SHORE The congregation of Trinity Anglican Church welcomes the community to join in fellowship over a hearty bowl of soup while delighting in a great cinematic work. "Soup and a Movie at Trinity" started on Feb. 15 and will be held over five Mondays from 6-9 p.m. A free will offering is collected with any extra funds going to outreach. All in the community are welcome but need to reserve their spot by calling 519 565-2790 by the Sunday prior to the movie with their name and number of people attending. The schedule of remaining movies is as follows: Woman in Gold, March 7; and The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, March 14. SKATING CLUB It is time for the Bayfield Skating Club members to shine and impress folks with their new skills. All are invited to attend the annual Skating Showcase on March 8. The event will begin at 6 p.m. in the Bayfield Arena and feature Canskate, Junior and Senior Skaters as they skate to the songs of "Glee". Following the performances, year-end certificates will be handed out upstairs in the community center. Those who attend the show are encouraged to bring their skates for a family and friend skate immediately following the certificate presentation until 7:50 p.m. AG1t1CULl UR 1L SOCIETY The Bayfield Agricultural Society (BAS) will be holding its first meeting for 2016 on March 14 at 7 p. A new mobile website aptly named, Explore Beyond the Shore, encourages shoreline tourists to explore inland and visit the many wonderful attractions located just beyond the shore. The new site includes several self-directed experience tours 10 W including, the Bluewater Area Farm Tour, which highlights our areas many farm direct retail stores. Here, visitors can purchase locally grown and prepared food and beverages. The site also features the C.A.N.O.E. Trail (the Clinton and Area Natural Outdoor Experience Trail) that showcases many natural attractions and sporting activities including, canoeing, hiking, water sports, adventure tours and more. Lastly the series includes The Thrift Trip, which is a directory of all antique, thrift, and flea markets located in the area. The Explore Beyond the Shore website has been created by the Municipality of Bluewater with the assistance of Central Huron. The goal of the site is to increase visitor engagement in rural areas and inland communities, to promote longer stays and increase spending within the tourism sector. To view the site please visit: www.ExploreBeyondTheShore.ca. BRVTA HOSTING DAYLONG HIKE LEADER COURSE The Bayfield River Valley Trail Association (BRVTA) is hosting a Hike Leader Course on March 13. This Hike Ontario approved course will teach interested people how to lead safe and enjoyable hikes. The event will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Bayfield Lions' Community Building. The course will cover: preparing for leading a hike, backpack contents of the hike leader, hike leadership styles, proactive and reactive risk management, advertising your hike, and nutrition One item that likely will be discussed is alternatives for a midway. It became clear at the recent Ontario Association of Agricultural Societies (OAAS) convention that midways tend now to only go to summer events that have about 10,000 people attending. There are fewer midways in operation and they need more money to generate a profit. Anyone interested in helping with ideas for the fair or assisting on committees is welcome to attend the meeting. The fair is a community event that provides information about modern agriculture. HSBEC Join the Huron Small Business Enterprise Centre (HSBEC) on March 10th for an evening celebrating women entrepreneurs in Huron County. Both women and men are welcomed to this networking event, from 5:30-9 p.m., at the White Carnation Banquet Hall in Holmesville. This is an opportunity to recognize the contributions made by businesswomen with a special focus on those who participated in the Self Employment Benefit (SEB) Program. The cost for the event is $30, including HST. Cheques should be made out to the County of Huron. The first twenty SEB graduates or mentors (men or women) to register will have their registration fee sponsored. Those who attend do not need to be a current or past business owner. SATURDAYS AT THE LIBRARY The Friends of the Bayfield Library are once again hosting their Saturday's at the Library series with three more presentations on the schedule. Chris and Pam Bowers had the privilege of hiking 800 KMs on the Camino de Santiago de Compostela in Spain in the spring of 2015. On March 5, they will present a unique "his and hers" perspective on their 36 day adventure. Rounding out the series will be a presentation by the Huron Harp School on March 19 and the Elliot's Quartet on Apr. 2. Week 10 Issue 348 The day will also detail aspects of actually hitting the trail such as, getting to the trail using car shuttles, signaling, hiking pace and breaks, monitoring hikers, "What -if' scenarios, Leave No Trace and trail etiquette. The Sport and Recreation Communities Fund is supporting the course and participants 55 years and older can take the course for $15. Successful participants will receive a manual, wallet card and badge. Participants must be 16 years of age or over and current First Aid and CPR are recommended. The fee for those under 55 years is $60. The Safe Hiker Program is the prerequisite for the Certified Hike Leader course unless exempted by demonstrated previous experience (a minimum of five day hikes within the last year and a reference or recommendation from a recognized authority such as a hiking club, conservation area, or provincial park). The arena was booked for the whole school day as the classes were divided up into smaller groups so that everyone had ample room to skate around. What evolved was a real feeling of camaraderie as more experienced youngsters lent a hand to those who were just starting out or hadn't logged much time with blades strapped to their feet over the years. Strong friendships were evident among the students as they skated. The Grade 7 class at Huron Centennial School posed for a picture before they were bussed back to school after their time on the ice. the Bayfield Arena! Skating Day proved to be a great break from the normal school routine and everyone seemed to be having lots of fun including Alex Korporaal. For many of the children this was a special opportunity to get to skate with their classmates. Their business, Heartbeat Technologies, was the wildcard winner in a recent online voting competition and as a result Lana gets to present their business plan in person at an event in Holland during the next round of competition. No matter the end result the networking experience alone is no doubt worth the trip across the ocean.
