ABOUT FIFTY PEOPLE ENJOYED A
WINTER WALK
PHOTOS BY GARY LLOYD-REES
The Bayfield River Valley Trail Association (BRVTA) hosted their annual Winter Walk on Jan
17 along the Varna Nature Trails at the Stanley Complex in Varna.
Thirty people took part in the guided hike along Mavis' Trail, while 20 people enjoyed the
shorter more easily accessed Taylor Trail. Six intrepid hikers did both!
As there was sufficient snow, Dwain Forrest, of Timber's Outfitters in Seaforth, gave a quick
"lesson" on the trail on snowshoeing. And a number of people donned the rental snowshoes
that were available, or brought their own, to test the trails.
Starting at noon at the Stanley Complex a hot dog lunch was served along with hot apple cider.
Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority (ABCA) staff was also on hand to share information
about the Bayfield Watershed Plan. And there were additional displays set up by the BRVTA
and the Bayfield Blue Community Project.

Cast a vote for your favorite soup at the Bayfield
Town Hall's annual "Soup's On" event Feb. 15.
Once again local groups and organizations, as well
as many of Bayfield's restaurants, will compete for
the honor of winning one of the coveted Soup Ladles.
Who will be the best of Bayfield's soup chefs in
2015?
As in previous years, there will be a People's Choice
Award and also a Celebrity Award, where judge
Richard Fitoussi will select his favorite soup in a
"blind" tasting.

3:30 p.m.). The cost to sample as many soups as
desired is $5 (at the door); children under 12 years
are free. Or, sample all the delicious soups, served in
your very own Bayfield Town Hall mug for just $10
and after the tasting is done, it's yours to take home!

ALZHEI ERS SOCIETY
Two Bayfield women would like to remind everyone
cleaning up after their holiday gatherings that their
tradition of collecting empties for Alzheimer's Disease
is continuing this year.
Dianne Brandon and Carrie Sabourin will be
participating in the Huron County 2015 Walk for
Memories on Jan. 31. The duo are now collecting
donations for the cause.
It is, of course, hoped that everyone will celebrate
responsibly this festive season and when doing so
plan to donate the empty beer bottles and cans; wine
and liquor bottles to their team, "For the Love of
Elaine and Doris". One of the ladies being honored is
currently living with Alzheimers, Elane Brandon,
Sabourin's grandmother. Unfortunately, Doris
Schilbe, Dianne's mother died on Aug. 4 at the age of
80.
Empties of all sorts may be dropped off at Brandon's
Hardware in Bayfield, or picked up anytime, just call
Brandon's Hardware at 519 565-2677 or 519 565-
2545. Empties may also be dropped off at Bayfield
Convenience in their names.
The ice is now in the Bayfield Arena and some new
skating opportunities are being combined with some
old favorites.
On Mondays, "Moms & Tots Skating" will be held
from 10:30 a.m. to noon. The Municipality of
Bluewater is sponsoring this ice time for the youngest
in the community.
All skill levels are welcome to enjoy a free one-hour
skate at the arena every Wednesday starting at 9:30
a.m. All are encouraged to come and enjoy this free
time on the ice thanks to the sponsorship of Absolute
Automation. Please note that this free skate was
originally on Monday mornings.
And on Fridays and Mondays at 8 p.m. Men's Pickup
Hockey games are being enjoyed — very little skill is
required. Also on Fridays, Women's Pickup Hockey
is held. Participants take to the ice at 7p.m. Fun,
exercise and laughs all for $15 per game.
For additional information please contact the Bayfield
Arena at 519 565-2121.

TREE PROJECT LOOKING FOR WAYS
TO FILL THE VOID ON MAIN STREET
A total of 308 new trees have been planted in Bayfield and along the river bank since 2011 at a
total cost of $46,200, the executive of The Bayfield River Valley Tail Association (BRVTA) was
told last week.
Roma Harris, speaking on behalf of the Bayfield Tree Project told the trail executive another
200 trees are still needed to complete the new -tree project. Each tree costs an average of
$150, depending on the variety.
There were 69 trees planted in 2014.
"Project volunteers work not only to initiate tree plantings by negotiating with property owners
who live adjacent to planting areas along municipal streets, but also caring for trees by
wrapping, pruning and in some cases watering them. We also do fund raising to support the
project," Harris said.
Revenue for the trees are collected by the BRVTA that divides its revenue between tree
planting and maintaining the trails.
Harris also told the committee that, based on the advice of Martin Quinn, who undertook an
inventory of the trees along Main Street, four large trees on Main Street are scheduled to be
removed by Bluewater as they are in bad condition.
Quinn, parks supervisor with the Town of Goderich, was hired by the Municipality of Bluewater
as a consultant to review the survivability of 27 trees that are within the two block area of the
future Bayfield Main Street — Streetscape and Reconstruction Project. According to a report by
the Bluewater Public Works Department, Quinn determined that four of these trees — two
Sugar Maples, a Black Locust and a Horse Chestnut should be removed this winter due to age,
vehicular damage and/or disease.
Harris noted to the BRVTA that their removal will leave a void appearance on the street.
Because of the disruption to Main Street that will occur when the long -anticipated storm
drainage project is underway (a project which, as yet, is still unfunded), no new trees are being
planted in that area of Bayfield. One remedy to the increasingly tree -less appearance of the
street would be to purchase large -diameter trees and plant them in boxes to be placed along
Main Street until they can be permanently planted. If partners could be found, funding for the
boxed trees could be sought through grants and donations.
The fitness activity is held on Mondays and
Wednesdays for one hour starting at 7 p.m. at the
Bayfield Community Centre. Classes are $10 per
person or $90 for a 10 -pass.
To learn more contact Keys at 519 440-9723 or visit
her Facebook page:
www.facebook.com/zumbainbayfield.
EXETER QUILT SHOW
On April 16-18, the Exeter Quilt Show will be held at
Trivitt Church. The committee is now seeking the
help of the surrounding communities to collect quilts
made before 1960.
Organizers note that the older the quilts are the
better and condition is not critical. They realize that
heritage quilts are not usually in mint condition. They
have been used and loved. If the quilts have a story
to accompany them, that is even better.
Vintage hats will be displayed throughout the venue
and they plan to have a few mirrors for those who
want to try on a few for pictures.
The committee is hoping to have 85-90 quilts for the
display. To learn more contact Bonnie Sitter by email
at bonnie.sitter@gmail.com.
THE BUS
THE BUS comes to Bayfield every Tuesday as part
of the Rural Response for Healthy Children (RRHC)
programming.
The playgroup at the Bayfield Library occurs every
Tuesday morning from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and includes
an opportunity for toy lending.
THE BUS offers its lending services to community
daycares and Full Day Early Learning classrooms
throughout the county on a mutually agreed upon
schedule.
INMEMORIAM
The community will be saddened to learn of the
death of Dorothy Mae Hardy (ne Walter) on Jan. 10.
She died peacefully in her sleep at the Bluewater
Rest Home in Zurich at the age of 101.
She was predeceased by her husband of 59 years,
Norman E (Peter) Hardy. She was survived by her
daughters and their spouses, Gayle and Patrick, of
Bayfield; and Beverley and Michael as well as eight
grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren.
She is described as being an honest, humorous,
loving and adventurous lady whose mind, at 101
years, remained clear and interested in the world.
She was a 'presence' among her family and friends
who will be long remembered.

REMEMBER ME?
There are countless photographs of people in the Bayfield Historical Society's Archives
collection, but sadly their names were never recorded. In this section we will showcase an
image with the hopes that one of our subscribers might be able to identify the individual(s) in
the photo. Please email your information to the Editor's attention at the address listed near the
bottom of the page in "Submissions" or you can email the archivist directly at
bayarchives@tcc.on.ca or click on the image and make a comment on Flickr.
Editor's Note: We are now adding the archive's code to the information supplied with the
photographs so that if anyone would like to learn more from the Bayfield Archives about
certain pictures they can use the code to make the process easier.
This week, an image by photographer H. Foster of Clinton, Ont., is featured. Does anyone
remember this gentleman? (Archives Code: PB 13 28a)
In lieu of flowers a donation to Sleeping Children
Around the World or the London Mission would be
appreciated. A Celebration of Dorothy's life will take
place in the spring.

A RETROSPECTIVE OF VILLAGE HAPPENINGS FROM SEPT. 10 TO DEC. 24
THE BEST OF THE BAYFIELD BREEZE 2014
Sept. 10 - Issue 271 - STORM CLOUDS MAKE AN IMPRESSION ON VILLAGE: On Sept. 5, Bayfield and region
experienced their first Heat Advisory of the summer of 2014 and from that a thunderstorm was forecast. About
5:45 p.m. as First Friday events were in full swing along Main Street the clouds began to roll in. Gary Lloyd -Rees
and Jack Pal members of the Photography Club of Bayfield (PCoB) had a display set up at Patina Studios on Main
Street to promote the club. As avid photographers their cameras are always within reach and when the storm
shortened the event they turned into storm hunters capturing images of the storm along Main Street and the
beach. (Photo by Jack Pal)

With the holidays now past and a return to routine
we take one last look at the year that was. This
week: Sept. 10 to Dec. 24.
And again we have included a few of the lovely
and supportive comments sent in by our
subscribers. Thanks to all those people who have
taken the time to share their thoughts, they are
very much appreciated.
And we would also like to take this opportunity to
thank the community and village organizations
that donated to our "Website Upgrade Appeal"
held in the late summer of 2014. Through your
generosity we realized our fundraising goal of
$5,000. This money is now being put to good use
generating a new foundation for the Bayfield
Breeze to operate from. Hopefully if funds allow
there will also be some cosmetic changes coming
too. So once again a heartfelt thank you. Here's
to a stellar 2015!

A house no longer feels like a home when the pictures come off the walls...
This is the conclusion I came to this week as the big move continues. I gently wrapped up the photo gallery in our apartment to
store away for another day. I have a rule in my house — the "art" on the walls has to be taken by me or I had to be present when
the image was taken — and with only a couple of special exemptions to the rule we have kept it thus. Our apartment above the
Bayfield Village Inn was a very personal space away from the prying eyes of summer visitors, restaurant patrons and hotel

guests. Except for those couple of occasions when guests ignored the Private sign on the door and came on up for a self -
guided tour! But that in and of itself is a story for another day...
This week's issue will be the last one I pen in my upstairs office space — I have written it huddled over a five -drawer storage
cabinet (my desk moved last week) pushed close to the West -facing window in the room. At this time of year you can see
glimpses of the lake through the trees from this window. I found myself glancing out more often than usual taking mental
pictures with my minds eye ... a little piece of home in my heart no matter where my pictures hang next. - Melody
