WRITING WORKSHOP Best selling author, Alison Wearing is returning to Bayfield to once again tell her story but this time she will also be taking the time to teach others how to better tell their own story. On Oct. 24, Wearing will provide a glimpse behind the writing of her best selling memoir and into the process of turning life stories into literature. For Wearing, life was pretty normal until Dad came out of the closet. Then it got more interesting. Her book, "Confessions of a Fairy's Daughter" is based on her own life growing up with a gay father. This evening of stories and laughter will be held at Knox Presbyterian Church starting at 7 p.m. and is free of charge. The following day, Oct. 25, Wearing will be running a workshop entitled, "The Art of Memoir" at the Bayfield Public Library from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The cost to take part is $45. The workshop is designed to assist participants in transforming elements of their life into a literary work. VISION HEALTH MONTH When was the last time your child had their teddy bear's vision tested? Regular eye examinations are an important part of your child's eye health and if the appointment would be made easier with teddy by their side then Main Street Optometric in Bayfield welcome cc.villageofbayfield.com/Members/BayfieldBreeze/week421ssue276/tabid/690/Default.aspx 2/11 5/31/2019 week 42 Issue 276 At the halfway point on Mavis' Trail there is a lookout with a spectacular view of the Bayfield River. FUTURE OF THE MIDWAY IN QUESTION AT COMMUNITY FAIR The Bayfield Agricultural Society (BAS) was pleased to appoint Susan Lehnen as its secretary at its most recent meeting. Lenhen has been associated with the BAS for many years looking after the Youth Section and the Food Booth. She has an excellent skill set for taking minutes of meetings and finding solutions for issues. She is familiar with many people in the Bayfield area and will do an excellent job. According to BAS President, "The role of secretary is in excellent hands." Henry Baker is going to start the cutting of evergreen boughs for the Christmas wreaths in the week starting Oct. 20. Anyone who would like to assist should contact him by calling 519 482- 9105, and he will let them know where and when a team will start trimming. If anyone in the area is trimming their yew, juniper, cedar, white pine, or spruce shrubs or trees, contact Baker and he will arrange to pick them up if they can be used for the wreath making. Wreath makers will start assembling at Stonefield Garden Centre on Oct. 29. If anyone new would like to volunteer call 519 482-9296 to let the BAS know you can assist. Usually people bring something for a potluck lunch and everyone snacks through at least two coffee breaks, so it isn't a time of continuous working. This year once again the IODE Christmas house tours in Goderich will have a wreath on each of the doors made by the BAS. Having a midway at a small fair is a challenge. This year it cost the BAS $5,000 to have Billy G Amusements at the fair. The costs for midways with insurance, safety checks, labor and fuel have made it that they cannot go to fairs without knowing they can cover their costs. "Our midway this year kept their prices for rides similar to all other midways that were in the region. The community has to really support the rides for a midway to make a profit and with the wet weather experienced during the fair the midway company struggled," said Yeo. The BAS members are leaning toward not having a midway next year because of the cost; however, they want something special for the youngsters. Community input is always valued. Any comments, suggestions, or ideas could be forwarded through info@bayfieldfallfair.ca. The BAS Annual Meeting is Nov. 21. New volunteers are always welcome and if working with a community organization putting together a weekend of activities under the umbrella of a fair is of interest please contact the BAS at the email address above. "It is gratifying that we have several new folks that are making a commitment to the Ag Society," concluded Yeo. them as well. And in the process your child's school can benefit too. October is Vision Health Month, and to promote healthy vision and overall well-being Main Street Optometric is continuing their program started in 2011 involving local schools. For the month of October they are hosting the "Teddy Bear Check -Up," where local children are encouraged to bring in their favorite teddy bear with them for a complete eye -exam. To promote healthy eyes and learning, Main Street Optometric is going to donate $10 per child to their respective school's library, as vision is involved in 80 per cent of all learning. In the province of Ontario children under the age of 19 years are covered annually under OHIP, so this program runs at no expense to parents or schools. Teddy Bears are tested free of charge; limit one teddy per child. Please call 519 565-2300 to book an appointment with Dr. Rich Samuell. New this year with Fall Foto Fest was an international photo contest sponsored by Photo Tour Trekkers (PTT). This event got everyone's attention with the first prize being an all expenses paid trip to Iceland with PTT to photograph the Northern Lights. "We kept the rules to a minimum to allow people to demonstrate a maximum amount of creativity," said Jack Pal, Fall Foto Fest co-chair. "Interesting landscape perspectives, urban life, portraits, Photoshop creations, big, small... if you can dream of a creation we want to see it" was how James Cowie, of Photo Tour Trekkers put it." Be careful what you wish for. In the end there were over 120 submissions from all parts of Ontario and beyond and in the words of one of the FFF participants "perhaps the finest collection of amateur photography I have ever seen." Photographers truly unleashed their creativity and made the task of choosing winners extremely challenging. The public was invited to see the photo display on Friday afternoon from 5-7:00 p.m. as part of the last First Friday event of the season. A longer public exhibition time is planned for next year to better share this wonderful harvest bounty. As is the case in all contests, there are winners. "However, I believe we are all winners for having had the privilege of seeing such a remarkable collection of photos created by some very talented photographers," said Pal. The judges agreed and took much longer than usual to come to their decisions. The winners were unveiled at the final wine and cheese event at the Bayfield Town Hall on Oct. 5 where the top 40 photos were on display for all FFF participants to see. Ela Kurowska, of London, took first prize for her photo entitled "Fermentia".
