Will there be rain? Will people come? Is there enough food? Are we ready?
These were the burning questions for the "Sunset on Summer" committee at 8:30 a.m. on
Saturday morning before set up began for the Bayfield Town Hall's first "Sunset on Summer"
Barbecue, held on the beautiful grounds of the Bayfield Town Hall.
Maple Lodge Farms got the poultry nice and smokey.
Amazingly, the rain clouds blew away and the sun shone down on the party! People did come
and there was enough food! Sandy Scotchmer, president of Bayfield Town Hall Heritage
Society (BTHHS), reported that 530 chicken dinners were served. A good amount of beer and
wine were also consumed with the chicken. The Little Surf Band got everyone in a great mood
for a party, singing popular songs from summers gone by originally performed by the Beach
Boys, Jan and Dean, The Stones and many others. The town hall grounds were certainly
rocking!
Scotchmer said that planning started in January and the biggest worry for the committee
always centered on selling tickets to an event that the BTHHS had never tackled before. With
so many wonderful activities held in Bayfield during the summer and with the committee's
The PCOB members will talk about photography,
show off their cameras and gear, and invite visitors to
join the club. They are also encouraging aspiring
photographers to submit photos to this year's
photography contest or take some workshops at the
Fall Foto Festival. They will also be selling 2015
Bayfield calendars.
KNITTING GROUP
Knitting is the newest hobby to have a group formed
around it in Bayfield. This open Knitting Group will
begin on Sept. 4 at the Bayfield Library and then
meet every first and third Thursday of the month from
1-3 p.m.
Organizers hope to give the group a name once they
start meeting to get input from those who join.
Anyone is invited to bring a project they are working
on or would like to start working on. The group will be
for all levels of knitters, an opportunity to share in a
common interest and enjoy a social time.
Please email Carole at
bobcarolecampbe112@gmail.com or Louise at
lever_louise@hotmail.com for more information.
GLEE SISTERS
The Glee Sisters, a women's choir with members
from all over Huron County, resumes practices on
Sept. 5, at 3 p.m. at St. Andrew's United Church in
Bayfield.
If anyone was thinking of singing with the group this
year, this Thursday would be a great time to join
because everyone will be facing new music,
including songs for their children's show for
Christmas in Bayfield on Nov. 8, songs to
commemorate the Montreal Massacre on Dec. 6, and
some familiar Christmas music.
This is a non -auditioned community choir, and no
choral experience is necessary. All women who want
to sing together and make new friends are welcome.
Anyone who is interested should please contact
Leslie Bella at Ibella@tcc.on.ca or 519 565-2373 or
visit the "Glee Sisters Choir" on Facebook.
ART CLASS
Bayfield area artist, Devon McCallum, will be
facilitating an adult art class that combines drawing

brave decision to hold the barbecue during a long weekend, there were definitely many jitters
throughout the months.
Bayfield Town Hall Heritage volunteers prepared to serve the multitudes from I -r: Lynne Gillians, Ruth Brown,
Kathy Dalton, Larry Dalton and Jane Rowat.
"We were absolutely overwhelmed with the support from the village of Bayfield," Scotchmer
said. "Many volunteers were needed to make the event a success and as always, people were
there for us. It was wonderful to see many previous Town Hall Board members on hand serving
food, drinks and continually helping with clean-up throughout the event.
"On behalf of the Board of Directors and the "Sunset on Summer" committee, I would like to
extend our sincere and heartfelt thanks to everyone who gave up time with family to help the
town hall during a long weekend. Without you all, the barbecue would not have been possible!
"A huge thank you is extended to everyone who purchased a ticket to support the ongoing
refurbishment of the town hall - we were extremely thrilled to have such a wonderful cross
section of people join us for a few hours of fun; families with young children, groups of friends
and couples who came out for dinner and to listen to music," Scotchmer said.
She added that the BTHHS are also extremely grateful to all of their sponsors who helped
them make this event a huge success.
"Things went so well, "Sunset on Summer" will be back in 2015! Mark your calendars!"
Scotchmer concluded.
The weather cooperated with the Bayfield Town Hall Heritage Society's first ever "Sunset on Summer"
Barbecue on the evening of Aug. 30 drawing a hungry crowd. A total of 530 chicken dinners were served at
the event.

Week 36 Issue 270
September is one of the best months of the year for hiking. The slightly cooler weather and
fewer mosquitoes make walking the trails more pleasurable. Trees and plants have just begun
their wonderful display of rich fall colors and the mushroom families are showing off an
amazing variety of shape, size and hue. Hiking presents an opportunity to get out and see the
birds as they gather in small groups, preparing for their fall migration and one of the hikes in
the Bayfield River Valley Trail (BRVTA) September line-up will be specifically for bird watching
while another will be a special Friday, Historical Hike.
On Sept. 12, a special Open Trails Historical Hike will be held highlighting "Ghosts, Murder and
Mayhem on the Heritage Trail". This hike will begin at 7 p.m. Participants are asked to meet in
Clan Gregor Square and follow the footsteps of the pioneers around the historic village, with
local historian, Dave Gillians. Those who take part will meander along Bayfield's tree lined
Main Street until they reach the breathtaking Lake Huron lookout at Pioneer Park. Then
descend the stairs and take an evening walk along the shoreline as Dave tells stories of harbor
history. This is a Level 1 hike for a leisurely pace.
The hike leaders will be Dave Gillians 519 565-5884, Pat Baker 519 565-4015 and Helen
Varekamp 519-565-5442.
Then on Sept.14, at 1 p.m. Woodland Trail will be the trail of choice for a leisurely paced, bird
watching hike with experienced birder, Roger Goddard. Learn to identify our local birds, and
migratory birds. Those who attend are asked to bring binoculars or come along just to enjoy
the scenic beauty, serenity of the ravines, old pastures and glacial hills as the hike travels
along old gravel quarry roads, lumber paths and deer trails. Participants are asked to meet at
the pavilion in Clan Gregor Square. This is a Level 2 hike and should take about an hour and a
half.
The hike leaders will be Pam Bowers 519 565-4506, Chris Bowers 519 565-4506 and Gary
Mayell 519 565-5662.
This will be the sixth year for the BRVTA's sponsored Bayfield Terry Fox Run it will also be held
on Sept. 14 but in the morning. Over those six years, Bayfield has raised over $20,000 for
cancer research. Organizers would like to add to that total for 2014!
Anyone who would like to help out as a volunteer prior to the run or on the day of or would like
any information about the event can contact Heidi Martin at outs ideprojects@tcc.on. ca.
On the afternoon of Aug. 27, the Main Street
Sailor sailed past Main Street shops enroute to
the parking lot at DL Creations on Hwy. 21
South. It has been determined that the sailor is
beyond repair but a new sailor created in his
likeness is already being created.
Ted Hayes, of London, a talented wood and ice
carver, has taken up the saw and began work
on a fresh trunk of Poplar tree removed from a
property on Glass Street the week prior.
Hayes noted that the challenge for him is to
recreate the detail in the face and hat of the
sailor that was made in the early 1990s as a
novelty for Harry's Restaurant. Unfortunately,
the necessary steps were not taken at the time
of construction to properly preserve the wood
and age and weather rotted the structure. That

The Bayfield Historical Society (BHS) has been
running a fundraiser for the "restoration" and
relocation of the Main Street Sailor. More
donations are welcome as the wish is to create
a sturdy base on which to mount the sailor that
will be restored to his original 10 -foot tall
stature.
People are invited to drop by and visit DL
Creations to see the work as it progresses.
When the work is complete the new sailor will
be moved to a spot near the Heritage Centre

or more can also suggest a nickname that will keep him going for the next 30 years. Donation
and name forms are available. As soon as he is back on his feet, the BHS will announce his
new nickname and the winner at an official unveiling.
The BHS would like to encourage people to also send in their pictures of the Main Street Sailor
who has no doubt joined in many a family "photo -op" over the years. These photos may also

The replica sailor will be at least two feet taller than its predecessor +
ended up being. When it was first carved in the early 1990s, proper
preservation called for lots of linseed oil particularly at his feet and lower
legs, but that was not to be. He was given a paint job instead. He later
contracted foot rot. Then he lost both his feet and lower limbs and
shrunk as a result. People are welcome to visit DL Creations to view the

Leigh Anne Van Aaken (seated front row third from right) challenged people to join her in a walk for
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as "Lou Gehrig's Disease" on the afternoon of Aug. 30.
Van Aaken suggested the event in place of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge in memory of her mother, Rose
Taman -Hutchings, who died from the disease five years ago. Van Aaken mapped out a route around the
village passing by places where her mother worked, lived and just loved to visit., starting in the park across
from the Bayfield Town Hall. Rose was a town hall supporter in the years it needed saving. The local walk
raised more than $750. The Canadian version of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge has garnered over $11,800,000
to date. (Photo by Melody Falconer -Pounder)

FRIENDS OF THE BAYFIELD LIBRARY
CHILDREN CREATE CHAOTIC AND COLORFUL STORYMOB!
—41
Friends of the Bayfield Library (FOBL) and members of the Glee Sisters rally the troops in the reading garden
prior to their parade and performance.
"The Busy Beaver" book provided plenty of parts for all ages to have some fun with.
Appropriately enough it was a bit of a mob scene as "StoryMob!" participants prepared to march along Main
Street in advance of their performance.
PHOTOS AND STORY BY MELODY
FALCONER -POUNDER
About 20 children along with their parents and
grandparents descended on the lawn of the
Bayfield Library Complex to put on a "StoryMob!"
with the support and guidance of members of the
Friends of the Bayfield Library on Aug. 30.
Story mobs have been held across Canada this
summer with great success. The youngsters could
sign up in advance for reading parts; puppets,
masks, signs and a outdoor set were created by
library friends. The children and their supporters,
including some of the Glee Sisters, a Bayfield
based choir for women, gathered in the new
Reading Garden to hold an impromptu rehearsal
and then they headed down the tree lined
pathways of Main Street's North side shouting and
singing and generally being a friendly mob to
attract attention and collect an audience for their
presentation which followed the march.
The book chosen for this exciting event was "The
Busy Beaver" by Nicholas Oldland. His story
reminded everyone to take care of others and the
world around us. Gretel Meyer Odell and Roxanne
Deans created "StoryMob!" to inspire a sense of
community and nurture literacy and imagination.
Leanne Kavanagh, a volunteer with the Friends of the
Bayfield Library (FOBL) led the mob up and down the paths
along Main Street's North side.

Members of the Glee Sisters assisted with the songs that helped the story flow - they also helped draw
attention to the project during the "StoryMob!" parade.
Creative costumes helped the story unfold; Allienna Selk took on the role of a homeless bird.
Calvin Selk took on the role of one of the main characters
in the story - the beaver.
This little lad took the inscription on his sign rather literally

So I did it! I completed the Grand Pines Area Literacy Challenge through Girl Guides of Canada. I had to read 25 books before
Aug. 31 to earn a really wonderful and colorful badge. (Yes, adults can earn badges too!) Hopefully a number of the girls in
Bayfield Guiding used the lazy, hazy days of summer to complete this badge as well. Sparks had to read 10 titles, Brownies 15
etc.
In case anyone is interested I have listed below a few of the titles I chose to earn this badge which was a terrific excuse to
make the time to do something I really love to do – READ! – Melody
