Though it's hard to imagine with the cool
temperatures we have been experiencing, spring
rains are not far off. And conserving rainwater is one
of the best ways to protect local water quality. In an
effort to encourage local households to capture and
store rain water, the Bayfield River Valley Trail
Association (BRVTA) is participating in a "Rain Barrel
Blitz".
Getting more rain barrels in the area is one of the
ideas from a community advisory committee in their
recently released Main Bayfield Watershed Plan.
The BRVTA is now accepting pre -orders for rain
barrels as a fundraiser. People can get on a waiting
list now at RainBarrel.ca/bayfieldtrails. They may
also call 519 235-2610 or toll-free 1-888-286-2610
for information about the local Barrel Blitz.
Pick-up of pre -ordered rain barrels from the BRVTA
will take place in Bayfield on Apr. 26 from 9 a.m. to
noon. The rain barrels cost $50 each with a portion of
proceeds supporting the BRVTA. Buyers have a
choice of colors and each rain barrel comes
equipped with all the parts you need to set it up.
Downspout diverters, dispensing hoses, and rain
barrel stands are also available at an additional cost.

SEEKING APPLICANTS
May 1 is the next deadline for individuals and organizations to submit applications for the
Huron Heritage Fund. Established in 2007, the purpose of the Huron Heritage Fund is to
encourage the preservation of heritage assets and activities of heritage importance to the
County of Huron and its residents.
Since its inception, the Huron Heritage Fund has supported many initiatives from throughout
Huron County. In recent years, projects have included support for Goderich Little Theatre's
production, "The Great Storm", exhibit enhancement funds for the North Huron Museum as
well as the publication titled, "The Beauty and Bounty of Huron County" by David Bishop,
Bonnie Sitter and Telfer Wegg.
"The county will contribute up to 50 per cent of the costs of a project to a maximum of $5,000,"
said Meighan Wark, director of Cultural Services. This investment leverages other groups or
individuals to invest in Huron County's heritage also.
Projects will assist in the preservation and restoration of heritage landmarks, historic buildings
and objects of historical significance not owned by the County of Huron. Heritage publications
and events also qualify for support under this program.
More information about the application process can be found on the county's web site at:
http://www.huroncounty.ca/museum/huronheritagefund.php
Brochures are also available at all branches of the Huron County Library.

INMEMORIAM
The community will be saddened to learn that James

Shakespeare, ON and Bayfield, died suddenly on
March 5.
Bisback and Johnny Kalisch purchased the Gordon
House on Clan Gregor Square in Bayfield not long
ago and an extensive restoration of this historical
building was completed. The interior of the Gordon
House was renovated to the highest standard and a
new addition added. Bisback was born in Seaforth
and had hoped to reside in the Gordon House upon
retirement.
He and Kalisch began their antique business in

REMEMBERME?
There are countless photographs of people in the Bayfield Historical Society's Archives

The congregation of St. James', Middleton hosted their fifth annual Pancake Brunch and Sugar Bush Tour on
March 29. Two tractors were used to transport people from Pine Lake Camp to the nearby Schilbe Sugar Bush.
The best way to enjoy the ride on a cool spring day was to bundle up and these folks did just that.
Lori Malott was kept busy presiding over the entrance table during the brunch.

hayride and conduct the tours of the syrup
producing operation.
According to St. James Vicar Wayne Malott, "The
sugar bush tour wagon ran non-stop the whole
morning and of course the kids especially loved it,
but so did the grown ups. It was just a fantastic
day of fun and fellowship and really great food."
Rick Schilbe, and family, open up their Sugar Shack for
tours during the day and visitors have an opportunity to
purchase a sampling of the sweet stuff to take home.
The Pancake Brunch and Sugar Bush Tour is a real family
event where folks can indulge in some extra syrup on
their pancakes.
About 325 people enjoyed the pancakes, sausage and real
maple syrup served at the March 29th event.

It is 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Apr. 1 and I haven't written "my bit at the bottom" aka Submissions yet. No pressure. "Layout" on the
248th issue of the Bayfield Breeze hasn't quite begun yet — there is still time for inspiration to strike.
But I have a chest cold, I'm weary from an eventful day and changing fragments into proper sentences isn't as appealing as it
usually is. This isn't my first attempt at some amusing musings — I've been at it for an hour now. Perhaps popcorn for dinner
wasn't the best alternative for feeding my brain.
When all else fails write about what you are grateful for: an empty notebook, my grandson's laugh, chocolate covered
strawberries (again, popcorn for dinner, bad idea) and the people who scroll to the bottom of the Bayfield Breeze each week.
Last week I invited recommendations from subscribers on books to read. I thank everyone who took the time to write in. I now
have several tempting suggestions to choose from in reaching my goal of 25 books before June 3. 1 am about to start number 13 this week! One person
was kind enough to tell me that she finds this section of our publication extra special because it is a little "biography" at the end of the Breeze each week.
That was very kind. And it is another thing I have been grateful for over these last 248 weeks... opportunity. - Melody
