TAOIST TAI CHI Starting in the New Year, Fung Loy Kok Taoist Tai Chi TM will be offering practice sessions for graduates of the beginner classes that have been held in the village in the last couple of years. Practice of the Taoist arts can improve strength, flexibility, balance, and circulation and can help calm the mind and cultivate the heart, transforming one into a healthier and more harmonious person. They have released three online videos to share some of the good work local groups, farmers and other landowners, community partners, and students are doing in a largely rural area that stretches from Sarnia to Tobermory. The local people in the videos are working together, along the shoreline, to better manage runoff during storm events and to keep sediment out of creeks, rivers, and Lake Huron. The videos were produced as part of the Rural Stormwater Management Model Project (RSWMMP) and can be viewed at ruralstormwater.com and by clicking on 'Videos' . within the set and will involve doing sets. GLEE SISTERS The Glee Sisters is a non -auditioned female choir that consists of over 20 spirited women who enjoy making music and having fun together. Dianne Brandon and Carrie Sabourin will be participating in the 2014 Walk for Memories on Jan. 18 in Bayfield and are now collecting donations for the cause. It is, of course, hoped that everyone will celebrate responsibly this festive season and when doing so plan to donate the empty beer bottles and cans; wine and liquor bottles to their team, "For the Love of Elane and Doris". The ladies being honored are currently living with Alzheimers, Elane Brandon, Sabourin's grandmother, and Doris Schilbe, Dianne's mother. CALLIGRAPHY COURSE Anyone looking for a creative way to pass the winter months in the village might consider picking up a Calligraphy pen. Rita Paakkunainen, is once again offering a 10 -week course starting on Tuesday, Jan. 7. It will be held at the Bayfield Lions' Community Building from 1-3:30 p.m. Paakkunainen, who has more than 20 years experience in the art, notes that the program is very flexible. Each person works at their own speed so the class will accommodate all from beginner to advanced levels. "It is very powerful to hear local people share their personal stories and we hope their work and their vision will give other residents ideas of some things they can do to protect and improve water quality in their local creek or river." The main video is about ten minutes in length. It is called Working Together for Clean Water, Clean Beaches. The video features landowners and conservation staff from five priority areas along the Lake Huron shoreline. Property owners in the video talk about projects they are doing to keep soil on the land and to keep bacteria, chemicals, and sediment out of watercourses. The video covers five sentinel watersheds along Lake Huron's southeastern shore, including the Lambton Shores, Main Bayfield, Bayfield North (Gullies), Garvey Creek — Glenn Drain (North Shore), and Pine River watersheds. given to all and there is a lot to learn for both beginners and advanced students. FITNESS FUN One of the most popular winter pastimes in Canada is skating and Bayfield is fortunate to have ice in its arena this year to take advantage of. ONLY MOTHER NATURE KNOWS The Bayfield River Valley Trail Association (BRVTA) is already looking forward to the New Year. They along with the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority (ABCA) are holding a Welcome to 2014 Winter Hike on Jan. 4. The two Varna Trails, which can be accessed off the parking lot at the Varna Complex, will be the setting for the hiking that will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The group hike will start at 11 a.m. sharp, so participants are asked to arrive by 10:45 a.m. Depending on the weather, either hiking boots or snowshoes are acceptable footwear. If there is snow, and anyone wishes to try snowshoes, they can rent them from Outside Projects at 6 Main Street North in the village. There will be a choice of trail, either the Mavis Trail to the Bayfield River, at four kilometers and moderate difficulty, or the Taylor Trail, at just over a kilometer. The Taylor Trail is currently being developed as a mobility trail. Following the hiking, hot dogs and cider will be served in the Varna Complex. Donations for the food will be welcomed. There will be displays and information on the newly released Main Bayfield Watershed Plan, the BRVTA, and the newly formed Huron Tract Land Trust Conservancy.
