Pharmasave, Michael's Pharmacy wants to help area residents live the best life they can. For this reason they are hosting two upcoming seminars for people living with Diabetes and blood pressure concerns. Diabetes Management and Prevention will be the topic of discussion at a seminar to be held at the pharmacy on Nov. 26. Blood Sugar testing techniques will be highlighted. And then on Nov. 28, a Blood Pressure Management Seminar will be held with traditional and natural approaches being discussed. Both seminars are free but as space is limited anyone wishing to attend should reserve a spot by calling the pharmacy at 519 565-4454. Can't make it to a flu clinic this fall? Never fear, the pharmacists at Pharmasave Michael's Pharmacy and Bayfield can give the shot to anyone five years or older. (Photo by Judy Hodgins) Folks about the village will have noticed that last Tuesday (Nov. 5) was a very productive day for the Bayfield Tree Project (BTP). On Tuyll St. they planted: two Green Spire Lindens, one Tulip Tree, two Ornamental Pears, five Red Buds, six Elms and three Hackberry. In 2012, they planted some "Homestead" Elms on Tuyll St. at Colina St. This year, in the same location, they added some "Valley Forge" Elms. Curious individuals are encouraged to check the labels on the trees to see which is which. It should be noted that both varieties are resistant to Dutch Elm Disease. On Ducharme Cres., off Hamilton St., they planted one each of the following: Tulip Tree, Maple, Hackberry, Sycamore and Red Oak plus three Sunburst Honey Locust. On Christie St a Sunburst Honey Locust was planted. On John St., kitty corner to the west end of the Bayfield Arena, they planted two Red Buds and a White Angel Crab Apple. A total of 31 trees were planted. "You'll also see that some of the trees that were previously staked have had the stakes removed to be reused and that "white guards" have been wrapped around the tree trunks to protect them from animals in the wintertime," said Ainslie Willock, for the BTP. On behalf of the membership she said, "A big thank you to all the homeowners who have agreed to slowly water the trees for 20 minutes once a week, during no -rain periods, for the next two years. This will help guide the roots down to the underground water supply." She also extended thanks to Verbeek's Farm and Garden Centre, of Clinton, for all their extensive work; Ontario Hydro, Tuckersmith Telecommunications (TCC) and Union Gas for providing all the locates prior to planting; the Bluewater Council and staff, Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority (ABCA) and the Bayfield River Trail Association, for all their support. The project continues to be indebted to all those people who have made a donation toward tree plantings. Their names can be found on the BTP website, bayfieldtreeproject.com. To join this growing group of donors beautifying the community and helping the environment, simply make a cheque out to ABCA with Bayfield Tree Project in the memo line. These can be mailed to: ABCA, c/o P.O. Box 164, Bayfield, ON NOM 1 GO. ABCA will issue a charitable receipt for tax purposes. The BTP are now planning for their spring planting, to learn more contact Sondra Buchner at sondra@bayfieldtreeproject.com or 519 565-2518. 3 p.m. According to Pharmacist, Michael Ibrahim, people need to be monitored for about 20 minutes after they are given a shot to ensure they don't react to it so people should allocate their time accordingly. LETTERS TO SANTA Bayfield residents will be pleased to know that Santa Claus will once again be receiving mail in his special mailbox at the new Post Office Box Building on Main Street in the Bayfield Library Complex. Last year with the construction of the new building the box was relocated temporarily to the Bayfield Convenience Store (also home to the local post office). Santa's elves were grateful for the assistance last year but are very happy to get back to the old routine. They have so very much to do at this time of year! ST. JAMES', MIDDLETON "Soup 'N Sweets" sounds like the perfect comfort food to indulge in for a good cause. The congregation of St. James', Middleton will be hosting said luncheon on Nov. 17 starting at noon. On the menu will be homemade soups, fresh breads, beverages and some great desserts! A free will offering shall be collected for the Huron County Christmas Bureau. The luncheon is scheduled to start following the 11 a.m. church service at noon. All are welcome to join in worship prior to the meal. LIONS' CLUB The Bayfield Lions' Club members have recently added a BLOG page to their website: www.bayfieldlions.ca. They hope to initiate discussion on topics of interest to the community. Their introductory piece speaks to the future of the Bayfield Arena. They hope to hear from people and encourage everyone to outline their thoughts on the future of the building. According to Lion Dave Nearingburg, this opinion piece is not the official position of the Bayfield Lions' membership but merely meant to initiate discussion. The first annual Bayfield Fall Foto Fest (FFF) is now a month past. At the regular meeting of the Photgraphy Club of Bayfield (PCoB) on Nov. 7, the winners of the FFF photo competition were selected by club members through a vote. Over 330 photos have been submitted to date to the http://www.flickr.com/groups/bayfieldfff site. Of those submissions, 35 were entered in the competition for the three prizes. The PCob are pleased to announce the following winners: first prize, a weekend Fiat rental courtesy of Fiat London, to Mel Diotte; second prize, a two day registration to FFF 2014 (Oct. 4-5), Janette Baillie; third prize, a one day registration to FFF 2014, choice of day, Judy Jewell. The firefighters collected food along the Santa Claus Parade route as well as at the Bayfield Foodland store following the parade until early afternoon. The collected food and cash were then given to Blessings in Zurich. According to Fire Chief, Ian Siertsema, 'The support and generosity of the community is greatly appreciated by the foodbank." AVMA FUND VOTING Three Camp Klahanie veteran campers enjoyed a weekend at the property on Nov. 2-3 after four long years. They invite everyone to vote for the camp in the third round of the AVIVA Fund Competition. (Photo by Melody Falconer -Pounder) Four years of challenges and negotiations resulted in the Camp Klahanie, located between Bayfield and Goderich on Hwy. 21, being sold to the Goderich Lions Club. It is now being revitalized for youth in Huron County and beyond to use and will officially open in Spring 2014. Camp Klahanie has a bright future ahead of it and it could be even brighter if the Goderich Lions Club is successful in their quest to make it into the Top 10 in the third and final round of the AIVA Community Fund competition that began on Nov. 11. At the time the Bayfield Breeze was published on Wednesday morning, Camp Klahanie sat in ninth place in the voting. They need the community's help to stay in the top 10. If all of the current supporters vote everyday in the third round and others rally their support the idea has a very good chance of making it to the semi final and a chance at winning $50,000. One of the goals of the Camp Klahanie Board of Directors and Lions members is to provide better facilities for co-ed camping opportunities. A second building with washrooms is needed to realize this goal. In addition there are dreams of having a hiking trail around the property and individual camping bunkies hidden in the woods for campers to fully enjoy camping in nature. Beyond the dreams there is a real need to replace the roof on the kitchen building and picnic shelter in the very near future. It would appear that every year we try to convey just how large the crowd that gathered was and each year the crowd seems to grow and grow. This year it is probably quite safe to state that the largest crowd ever gathered in the park for the annual lighting of the lights. While the crowd waited for the lights to turn on they indulged in hotdogs and hot drinks sold by the Bayfield Town Hall Heritage Society in support of the Bayfield Town Hall. Karen Sealy, Interior Designer and frequent guest on City TV's City Line, was given the delightful task of leading the crowd in a countdown to the switching on of the lights. She invited several really enthusiastic youngsters to help her count. And following the countdown the park was all that more brightly lit thanks to the generosity of Tuckersmith Communications Corporation (TCC) who provided an additional 250 strands of lights for the trees in Clan Gregor Square. Once the lights were shining it was time for Santa Claus to make his grand entrance off a Bayfield Fire Truck. Santa was afforded rock star treatment when people of all ages lined up on either side of the walkway leading to the gazebo for an opportunity to greet the jolly old elf. Even more youngsters waiting for their special moment on his knee when he reached his special chair greeted him at the gazebo. After time with Santa many families drifted off toward Main Street to check out the shops and restaurants on Main Street that were open late to mark the start of the holiday season. BAYFIELD CONCERT SERIES An evening with iconic singer -song writer Dan Hill is next on the docket for the Bayfield Concert Series. Hill is perhaps known best for the ballad "Sometimes When We Touch". Meades Bros, with sponsorship from www.briandupuis.com, will host this concert at the Bayfield Town Hall on Nov. 28. Tickets are $40 and are available at The Black Dog and Luxe Clothing Co. in Bayfield as well as from ticketscene.ca. GARDEN CLUB Members, invited guests and those who wish to join the Bayfield Garden Club are welcome to share in the Annual Fall Potluck on Nov. 18. The evening will begin at 6:30 p.m. at St. Andrew's United Church. Those who attend are asked to bring a dish to share plus their own plate and cutlery. A short annual meeting will be held at the conclusion of the evening. Photographer, Jen Smith will be the guest speaker. She will share how she transforms who photos into an art form for framing. She will bring her collection to share and pieces will be available to purchase. CPH AUXILIARY For many Bayfield residents Clinton Public Hospital (CPH) is their choice for healthcare and therefore the work of the Auxiliary to the CPH should be of interest. The auxiliary members are once again organizing their Gift of Light Campaign. Tickets for a light or lights to be presented as a gift or in memory of a loved one are available now from auxiliary members, the CPH Gift shop, CPH Admitting or by calling Shirley Carter at 519 482-7776. Donations are used to fulfill new equipment needs at CPH. A "Black and White New Year's Celebration" will be held at the Bayfield Town Hall on Dec. 31 starting at 8:30 p.m. There will be dancing to the music of Starsoundz DJ. Party favors, appetizers and a glass of champagne at midnight are included in the $25 per person. Cash bar. Participants are encouraged to dress up or dress down in black and white to ring in 2014 with friends and family. OPERAUONHILD UMSTMAS It is the time of year when many local churches and schools start packing shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child a program organized by Samaritan's Purse Canada. Samaritan's Purse Canada is a nondenominational evangelical Christian organization that has been providing spiritual and physical aid to hurting people around the world since 1970. The members of the Church on the Way in Bayfield want to invite people not affiliated with a church or school that might like to become involved in the project to receive an empty shoebox from them. Instructions come with the box as to how to pack it and what to fill it with. Tax receipts are also available for donations. The national collection week is scheduled for Nov. 18-24. Marr, of Bayfield, died peacefully at Clinton Public Hospital on Nov. 6. He was 88. The sympathy of the community is extended to his wife of 60 years, Shirley; their two children and their spouses as well as his two granddaughters. A memorial service was held at Trinity Anglican Church in Bayfield on Nov. 12, Rev. Wayne Malott officiating. A private interment of ashes was held at Bayfield Cemetery. The event featured a reading of the book that was written by Jonathan Emmett combined with music by The Glee Sisters. The lead characters in the story were performed by I -r: Janice Nelson, Sondra Buchner and Blanche Savage. Dwight Nelson C.D. presided over the Remembrance Day Service in Bayfield on Sunday. Olga Palmer (left) and Janice Nelson braved a strong wind to lead the crowd in the singing of the National Anthem. Strong winds, cold temperatures and rain mixed with hail graced the Service of Remembrance held in Clan Gregor Square on the morning of Nov. 10. Despite the weather a good crowd of valiant citizens were drawn to the Square to gather around the cenotaph to honor the community's casualties of war. The Roll of Honor for both World Wars was read out at the service. Our soldiers lost in the 1914- 1918 conflict were: Edward Adley, Arthur Clarke, Harvey Currie, Kenneth Currie, Russel Erwin, Victor Evens, Allen McDonald, Robert McLeod and Wilfred Toms. Those men lost in the battles of 1939-1945 were: Stewart Cann, Robert David James Hopson and Richard V. Weston. Members of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 140, of Clinton comprised the color party. Many poignant moments were noted during the wreath laying ceremony. The wreaths were laid by: Gary Brandon, Royal Canadian Legion; Major the Rev. For the second consecutive year I was able to ride with my Sparks, Brownies and Pathfinders on the Bayfield Optimist/Bayfield Guiding float in the village's Santa Claus Parade. I took my camera along and had a great time taking pictures of the spectators that watched the parade along the route. Below is a slide show of a selection of those images. The Guides were kept busy handing out treat bags using a loaned golf cart as home base (thanks to the donor - I'm sorry I don't know your name!). Two hundred and sixty-seven treat bags, that they had also stuffed, were handed out - we didn't quite have enough for the whole route. We'll have to make double that number next year!
