Dec. 14, 2011 Vol. 3 Week 51 Issue 128 "HOME FOR CHRISTMAS IN STORY AND SONG" IS SANTA APPROVED EMPTIES FOR ALZHEEffRS Last year two local women started a unique initiative to raise money for their participation in the Walk for Memories that raises funds for the Alzheimer Society. By collecting empty beer cans and bottles, pop cans, wine and liquor bottles, as well as some other fundraisers; their team "For the Love of Elane and Doris", was the top fundraising team in the county. It is a title Dianne Brandon and Carrie Courtney would like to maintain this year during the 2012 Walk for Memories to be held on Jan. 28. It is, of course, hoped that everyone will celebrate responsibly this festive season and when doing so plan to donate the empties to the cause. (Photo by Melody Falconer -Pounder) BY MELODY FALCONER -POUNDER On the afternoon of Dec. 18, The Bayfield Town Hall and The Village Bookshop are teaming up to present a unique family Christmas event where people can share in some Christmas cheer and help feed those who may otherwise go hungry over the holidays. "Home for Christmas in Story and Song" will be held at the Bayfield Town Hall starting at 3 p.m. The event will feature a reading of Jan Brett's new Christmas book, "Home for Christmas" combined with music by The Glee Sisters. The readers will be village residents, Mary Wolfe, Judy Keightley and Erin Roy Those who plan to attend this afternoon should plan to come early as the first 20 families with children to arrive will receive a free copy of "Home for Christmas" due to the generosity of local friends of youth, the Optimist Club of Bayfield. Tickets are available now for $5 for adults and children under the age of 12 years are free. Please call The Village Bookshop at 519 565-5600. A monetary donation or non-perishable food items will also be accepted at this event as all proceeds and donations will be shared between the Huron County Food Bank Distribution Center (HCFBDC) in Exeter and Bayfield's Trinity Anglican Church locally based outreach program known as Feed My Sheep. United Communities Credit Union and the Optimist Club of Bayfield are the sponsors of this event. PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB ASSIGNED TO CALENDAR PROJECT FOR 2013 The Photography Club of Bayfield (PCOB) membership is excited to announce that they have taken on the Bayfield and Area Chamber of Commerce Calendar project for 2013. A new Flickr account has been created so all in the community can submit their photos for possible inclusion on the calendar pages. It is http://www.flickr.com/groups/bayfield-calendar-2013. "It is important to note that anyone can contribute up to 10 photos per day; you don't need to be a member of PCOB. Please invite your friends to contribute to this project. HERITAGE COY NHTTEE The Bluewater Heritage Committee will present the unveiling of a heritage plaque for the Historic Zurich Hotel on Dec. 18 at 4 p.m. at Smiley's Pizza and Pub. All are welcome to attend. A highlight of this event will be the 50/50 draw to be made by the Zurich Lions' Club proceeds from which will go to the Heritage Hay Twp. Hall Renovation. CPH AUXILIARY For many Bayfield residents Clinton Public Hospital (CPH) is their choice for healthcare and therefore the work of the Auxiliary to the CPH should be of interest. The Auxiliary met in the CPH Conference room on Dec. 5 with 33 members present. It was announced that the 7th Annual Gift of Light Ceremony held on Nov. 25 was very successful. The Auxiliary would like to extend their gratitude to everyone for their continued support of this event. Auxiliary President Ann MacLean welcomed guest, Joan Chesney, Hospital Auxiliaries Association of Ontario President - South Central Region to the meeting. She thanked the members for all the volunteer hours they have given. Following the morning meeting the members decorated the hospital for the Christmas Season. After all the baubles were hung the members enjoyed a luncheon and silent auction. The next meeting of the Auxiliary will be Jan. 9 at 9:30 a.m. New members are always welcome. "We would like the photos to be recognizable as being truly Bayfield and area," said Pal. In attempting to achieve this goal the submissions will be divided into five subcategories Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall, Christmas in Bayfield and Holidays. "In our selection process we will assign submissions to these five streams. To assist us in this process it will be helpful if those who post could tag their photos with one of these subcategories, although this is not mandatory," said Pal. The final selections will be sent for publishing in early July to allow for more time to sell the calendars. "This earlier publishing date, however, means that photos that fit a few of these will already have been taken... perhaps by someone in the community or by a visitor," Pal concluded. "Why not sort through your favorites and start contributing to the new Flickr group? This will encourage others to do the same." Bayfield Vettefest 2012 will be held on July 6-7. (Photo by Melody Falconer -Pounder) RELIEF FUND EXCEEDS GOAL Aug. 21, a devastating F3 Tornado struck Goderich. Aug. 22 the fundraising efforts began. Dec. 8 the Goderich and Area Disaster Relief Fund (GADRF) exceeded $3.7 million in donations. Tom Jasper, chair of the Goderich and Area Disaster Relief Fund recently announced, "Our fundraising goal of $3.5 million has been surpassed." With the provincial funding of up to 2:1, the $3.5 million could generate over $10 million to pay up to 90 per cent of the eligible claims. This service is for anyone who is finding it difficult to be joyful during this festive season. Whether this is due to the loss of loved ones or other circumstances all are invited to share in scriptures and carols. Those who take part will also have the opportunity to place a star on a tree in the sanctuary, a place where their personal sadness may be acknowledged and absorbed. PIONEER PARK In 1945, Lucy Woods Diehl, a life-long resident of Bayfield, enlisted the aid of several friends of the community to preserve the last piece of undeveloped lakefront property on the bluff overlooking the Bayfield River and Lake Huron. Woods also decided that the land should be owned and operated by an association and not by individuals. The original directors chose the name Pioneer Park as a tribute to the early settlers of Bayfield. Their vision remains today and is still driven by the support of volunteers. The Pioneer Park Association is currently looking for volunteers to join the board of directors. They are looking for a secretary as well as a treasurer. The secretary will be responsible for recording the minutes at the board meetings held four or five times per year) as well as the Annual General Meeting. The treasurer will be responsible for dealing with the financial transactions that will include writing cheques and making bank deposits. The treasurer does not need to be an accountant but needs to have good attention to detail. LIONS' CLUB An important holiday tradition for many shut-ins and octogenarians in the community is their annual visit from a member of the Bayfield Lions' Club. The Lions have been spreading Christmas cheer to seniors and the home bound for over 40 years. People in the community who may know of individuals who qualify for a visit, or who has turned 80 years young this year, should call Lion Penny Overboe at 519 565-5786 or call and leave a message at the Bayfield Lions' Community Building (BLCB) at 519 565-5170. Anyone wishing to become involved in the Bayfield Lions' Club, that has both male and female members, are invited to call the number listed above for the BLCB. One of the members will be only too glad to give you a call or pay a visit. Optimist Mike Dixon assisted Santa in the drawing of the prizes on Dec. 11. First prize, a doll with many terrific handmade accessories went to Jan Kuntz and second prize, a remote control truck was won by Crystal Wright. Now for those of you paying close attention Kuntz was the maker of all those wonderful doll clothes - so she generously donated it to a young girl she met at the Breakfast who was quite enamoured of the prize. OPTMST CLUB OF BAYFIELD THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY OF AN ENCOUNTER WITH SANTA CLAUS Two year-old Hudson Hessel-Cairns was a little timid about meeting Santa Claus but with some extra support from his mother, Tara Hessel, and a little gift from Santa he put on a brave face. PHOTOS AND STORY BY MELODY FALCONER -POUNDER A steady stream of folks came through the doors of the Bayfield Village Inn on Dec. 11 for the sixth annual Breakfast with Santa hosted by the Optimist Club of Bayfield. And they brought along their appetites consuming 22 dozen eggs, 16 pounds of bacon and five boxes of pancake mix were made into light and fluffy pancakes. The club greatly appreciates those businesses that sponsor the family friendly function including: Bayfield Foodland, Fairholme Dairy, Bayfield Village Inn, Brandon's Hardware and Albert Schilbe. In addition to a hearty meal, several children took advantage of the opportunity to spend a little time with the jolly old elf, himself. It is reported that with this year's mild weather Santa had no difficulty making it back to his workshop following the event. Spray Foam i*i✓r���©Vli,.y A favorite Christmas tradition of mine is watching "Miracle on 34th Street". I own both versions on VHS — the black and white original starring Natalie Wood and the 90s color version with Mara Wilson in the same role. I always try to make time to watch them both. Although I must admit that I'm partial to the remake — I love the timeless quality established in this more modern version and I love the sense of comic timing that young Mara has. I've watched this film so much in fact I often mimic her lines when suitable occasions arise in real life. And to add to the mix this year I discovered the "The Prep and Landing" animated series with David Foley to be both clever and endearing. These may become stories that I introduce my grandson to when he's old enough to sit upright without assistance. Here's hoping that you too can take some time this holiday season to curl up on the couch and by the twinkling lights of your Christmas tree enjoy a holiday classic or a new creation — there isn't much better to help you get into a festive mood — with maybe a cup of hot chocolate and a cookie or two thrown in for good measure. - Melody Ideas and contributions to the Bayfield Breeze are always welcome.
