HISTORICAL SOCIETY El cc.villageofbayfield.com/Members/BayfieldBreeze/Weekl81ssue95/tabid/500/Default.aspx 1/9 5/27/2019 Week 18 Issue 95 SEARCH FOR SOLDIERS' IMAGES ENDS WITH DEDICATION ti]3'[]'r•Ii7]771KIIaZi1P►m 7 On May 1st at noon, members of the congregation of St. Andrew's United Church and the Bayfield Historical Society (BHS) are going to dedicate the last two granite plaques with the images of young men who were killed during World War I. In July of 2008, on the 75th anniversary of the original dedication of the village's cenotaph, nine granite plaques with the engraved images of the soldiers who perished in the two Great Wars were unveiled as part of the memorial. The images of two other soldiers proved difficult to find. In fact, for the past four years, members of the BHS have been searching for pictures of Victor Evans and Arthur Clarke. Now their images will join the rest of the men from Bayfield who were killed during the two World Wars. Clan Gregor Square is the heart of Bayfield. This is where residents have always gathered to celebrate and mourn together. It's fitting that images of all the local men who were killed while serving their country are remembered and honored at the Cenotaph. Victor Evans was a member of St. Andrew's congregation when he was killed in April 1918, while at the Royal Air Force training facility near Trenton. He was only 21 years of age and had been a highly respected teacher at a school on Parr Line when he enlisted. His brother Dalton enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Forces and his sister Frances signed on with the American Nursing Corps. The Bayfield Archives has a copy of his obituary which took a full newspaper page. St. Andrew's was packed for the funeral and many residents were forced to wait outside as they paid their last respects. Arthur Clarke Victor Evans Arthur Clarke had already served in the British Navy before immigrating to Canada with his wife Emily. He was 36 years of age when he and his brother Herbert enlisted. At that time they were working on area farms near Hensall. Before he was called up, Arthur had moved his four young children (ages four to eight years) and his wife Emily, to Bayfield. Both Arthur and Herbert Clarke were killed during the horrific fighting around Vimy Ridge. Emily remained in Bayfield and never remarried. She raised her young children here and she died in Bayfield in 1950. The community is welcome to join in this service of recognition. CELEBRATE THE ART OF SONG AT THE 1010 11/1VATKI The Bayfield Town Hall will once again be filled with the sound of world-renowned musical talents when the fifth annual Bayfield Festival of Song returns to the village for concerts on the first two weekends of June. The Aldeburgh Connection Artistic Directors Stephen Ralls and Bruce Ubukata are offering up a variety of unique experiences for music lovers. Theatre -goers will have the opportunity to possibly exonerate a Bayfield boy of a murder committed 114 years ago. "Murder at the Albion Hotel: The Retrial of Fred Elliott" is an original production being staged by the Bayfield Historical Society. In 1897, young Harvey Elliott was murdered outside the Albion Hotel after a drunken argument with his brother Fred. Fred was convicted of murder after a hasty trial and sent to penitentiary. New witnesses have come forward with new evidence that may exonerate Fred. And since the audience is the jury, the verdict could very well differ every time. Two shows will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Bayfield Town Hall on May 27 and 28. A matinee will also be staged in the hall at 2 p.m. on May 29. Tickets cost $15 each and are available at the Bayfield Archives Room or by calling Dave Gillians at 519 565-5884, BOOKS AND BRUNCH Antanas Sileika, author of Underground, will be the next featured writer in the Books and Brunch series presented by The Village Bookshop. The event will be held on May 15 at 12:30 p.m. at The Little Inn of Bayfield. An article published in the Vancouver Sun said, "Underground might be described as a historical love story, but it is also a political military/spy thriller. Sileika writes with a spare style that suits the action sequences as well as the rare moments of tenderness or humor. Entertaining and sometimes shocking, the book describes a little-known period of European history that has been kept underground far too long." Tickets cost $30 each and are available by calling 519 565-5600 or email mbrown@thevillagebookshop.com GOLF TOURNAMENT On June 11, area golf enthusiasts can make a difference in the lives of those youngsters involved in Big Brothers Big Sisters of North Huron (BBBNH) by taking part in the organization's Charity Golf Tournament. Crowds were similar in size to last year's with an estimate of 130 folks in attendance. When the hunt begins participants needed to be quick off the mark to share in the 4,000 eggs that were scattered across the lawn. The Easter Egg Hunt is hosted by the Optimist Club of Bayfield each year. Participants can purchase a ticket on a basket of goodies. The proceeds help cover hunt expenses. PHOTOS AND STORY BY MELODY FALCONER -POUNDER Four thousand chocolate Easter eggs were strewn about the lawn in Clan Gregor Square at 1 p.m. on Apr. 24. By 1:15 p.m. the members of the Bayfield Optimist Club who hosted the event were all packed up and heading for home. About 130 people descended on the park and those individuals under four feet tall conquered the field of candy in mere minutes. Tickets were also sold for the raffle of a basket filled with Easter treats and toys. Russell Heath, and his son, Teddy, of Clinton were the lucky winners. Everywhere I go people are asking me if I'm excited about the upcoming Royal nuptials between Prince William of Wales and Catherine Middleton. Then they quickly follow-up with, "So you'll be getting up early to watch it live, right?" My answers seem to shock them. With regret I state that I'm not excited and I plan to set the DVR and watch it all when it is convenient. In fact my feelings about the event are tinged with sadness. Too much has happened since I was a 14 year-old girl glued to the television in the wee morning hours of July 29, 1981. Diana was my fairy tale princess and I was swept up in the "happily ever after" spin. Thirty years later I know better. My wish for William and Kate is to learn from the mistakes of the past and despite the many adversities they are sure to face, remain a solid, united team. For the world that shares in their wedded bliss this week will be ready and waiting to knock them off their pedestals in the years to come. Despite my trepidations, I am a romantic at heart, and I'm sure once I start watching the day's events unfold I will be happy to toast to the health of our future King and Queen with a breakfast Mimosa or two.
