Sydney Pitt found that some of the trash was almost camouflaged among the leaves and grass. Members of Bayfield Guiding worked hard to clean up the ditches along Bayfield River Road on the afternoon of Apr. 12. Tim Horton's coffee cups topped the list of garbage collected on a short stretch of Bayfield River Road. Members of Bayfield Sparks, Brownies and Guides came to that conclusion after they spent their Apr. 12 meeting cleaning up the neighborhood. The girls were working on a section of their CSI Watershed Challenge. The girls picked up five bags of trash and recyclables and covered about half -a -kilometer of roadside. "I was getting really dirty and muddy while picking up the trash but I didn't really care because I was proud to do the job," said Sydney Pitt, a third year Girl Guide. "If people keep this up I'm afraid our earth is going to turn into a garbage dump," commented Raven Blyde, also a third year Guide. The girls felt that people should be encouraged to keep garbage bags in their cars and then dump the trash they accumulate while traveling in a gas station or fast food restaurant garbage can. They also wondered if a deposit was placed on paper cups if people would stop carelessly tossing them out. Girl Guide Melanie Wilson pours water out of a pop bottle she found in the ditch. I enlisted the help of my amazing girls in Guiding to clean some of it up this week but we didn't have enough time to get it all done. It has been a long winter and judging from the trash that is appearing from under the snow it would appear people have been comforting themselves with fast food and then pitching out the wrappers as they drive around. So later this week I will put on my rubber boots and head back out to pick up more trash. I encourage others in the village and surrounding countryside to do the same. Such flowers as Marsh Marigolds will soon be blooming and the frogs will soon be calling out from the ditches along the roadsides in our community so let's welcome them back with a garbage free space in which to grow and thrive. - Melody Ideas and contributions to the Bayfield Breeze are always welcome.
