seniors' residence in Goderich, but look forward to
being able to continue their involvement at St.
Andrew's. The congregation would like to extend to
them wishes for much happiness in their new home.

BAYFIELD'S TREES THEME OF LOCAL
EARTH HOUR EVENT
STORY BY MELODY FALCONER -POUNDER
Communities around the world will demand action on climate change by marking Earth Hour
on March 26. All are encouraged to turn their lights off for 60 minutes starting at 8:30 p.m.
(local time).
This year, Bayfield's version of Earth Hour will have a theme: "Restore Bayfield's Trees".
To celebrate Earth Hour in Bayfield everyone is invited to turn off lights at home and head to St
Andrew's United Church for a concert given by the Glee Sisters choir, and their sister
organization, Elliot's Liquidation Band. The evening will commence at 8 p.m. until 9:30 p.m.
The musical selections will reflect the evening's theme.
In addition, there will be a presentation on a new plan to replenish trees in the village's public
spaces, as the older ones die off. Donations will be accepted in support of the tree program.
For more information email Leslie Bella, Ibella@tcc.on.ca.
Organizers suggest participants bring a flashlight, candle or hurricane lamp to the event
because for one hour the lights will be off in the church as well!
UNITED WAY REACHES 96 PER CENT OF
Ill
United Way of Perth -Huron announced recently that they reached 96 per cent of their
fundraising goal for their 2010-11 campaign raising $1,012,100.
According to Marty Rops, campaign co-chair along with Debbie Gammie, "We entered the role
of campaign co-chairs with the faith in our community to continue to support those who are less
fortunate than we are."
"Meeting the $1 million mark is truly a reason for celebration. It is a record breaking total for the
United Way of Perth -Huron and will create positive change for many", said Gammie.
The goal the organization had set at the outset of the campaign was $1,050,000. This 2010
goal was in response to the increase in demand of services of numerous agencies that help
one in three people in our community who are in need.
The results were announced on Feb. 28 in front of an enthusiastic crowd of over 160
volunteers and donors at the campaign's celebration dinner at the Arden Park Hotel. Awards
were presented to dozens of corporations, employee groups and individuals who gave
generously and willingly to support their community through the United Way. A special award of
thanks was presented to Scotiabank Group for providing a Loaned Representative, Cindy
Hyde, during the three busiest months of campaign.
"The dedication and commitment of Marty and Debbie inspired us all", said Ellen Balmain,
United Way Executive Director. "This has been a year when so many in our community have
faced uncertainty yet Marty and Debbie mobilized the community to find it in their hearts to
support their neighbors. This is truly what makes Perth -Huron such a wonderful place to live."

O'ROURKE LOVED THIS VILLAGE FOR
ITS PEOPLE
The community will be saddened to learn of the recent death of 30 year-old Julie O'Rouke. Our

Foundation (Head and Neck Oncology Research) or the charity of one's choice.
Julie's good friend, Vance McPherson, penned a tribute to her and it follows:
On March 4, Bayfield lost one of its most charismatic and vivacious citizens. You likely met
Julie O'Rourke, and if you didn't, you certainly saw her. She was hard to miss; when you met
her I can tell you for certain that she was wearing something gorgeous and vibrant of which
you had never seen the like, and if you had the good fortune to speak to her, she gave you this
warm attention that made everything but your conversation dissolve. She was frequently about
the village, shopping for beautiful things with her enthusiastic tastes and exacting aesthetic, or
at 8:30 a.m. Tickets are on sale now for $25. For
tickets visit http://www.ticketscene.ca/events/3369/

indulging in extraordinary music mixed with good food and drink, or walking her dog along the
north beach, picking up sand -worn glass.
Julie's parents moved to Bayfield three years ago, and she moved in with them shortly
thereafter, newly diagnosed with cancer and determined to fight. Now, a woman who dove at
the Great Barrier Reef, hiked in Thailand, surfed in Portugal, moved amid the artistic
community of Paris, studied with the greats of photography in Rochester and routinely jogged
in New York's Central Park, is well -entitled to feel in whatever way she chooses about any
community in which she finds herself. So you shouldn't take it lightly to know that she loved
Bayfield.
She felt blessed to be in a place with a plethora of fine things — cuisine and artwork,
microbrew beer and vintage wine, beautiful clothes and crafty jewellery and experiments with
music. As a professional photographer, she created extraordinary images from natural
landscapes and the artifacts of humanity all around her.
But the most important characteristics of Bayfield for Julie were in the people. Here, people
become friends instantly when they meet on the street, in the pub or in the shops. Here,
proprietors and organizers work beyond money to create a good life for everyone who stops
by. Here, when a person struggles, the community moves in an effortless dance to soften the
challenge and help to make every day worth the battle.
So on behalf of Julie, then, and her family, thank you Bayfield for being as you are. This
community was a powerful force in her long fight, as she .often acknowledged, just as she was
and will always continue to be a great light to the lives of we who are left.

ISSUE 86
In Issue 86, we recognized Girl Guide and Boy
Scout Week with a picture taken of Girl Guide
leaders in full regalia. Janet Smith wrote to say that
the lady on the far left of the picture is Lillian Higgins.
Sondra Buchner sent a note informing that the
woman second from the right is Commissioner
Monteith. And although she didn't remember her first
name she recalled that in the 1950s she was
married to MPP Waldo Monteith, of Stratford.
Buchner remembered her because she was one of
the Guide Commissioners who tested her on her
path to becoming a Gold Cord Guide.

Week 11 Issue 88
For those who celebrate it, the Lenten Season begins today. For many it is a time of restraint choosing to give up a favorite
food or a vice until Easter. This year I am using the time as an opportunity to continue on the path to a healthier lifestyle. I am
giving up sodium for Lent.
I have never really considered myself to be a salt user, for me the salt shaker is more a decorative item on the table than the
holder of a prized condiment, but a recent increase in my normally perfect blood pressure, has got me reading nutrition labels
as well as websites on the topic. I've discovered that what I thought were healthier food choices might not have been.
I know when surfing the web for health information a person needs to take everything they read with a grain of salt (pun
intended). One website proclaims that adding more fruits and vegetables to your diet should help. Another says to stay away
from such vegetables as spinach, beets, celery and carrots as they are higher in sodium. So the old adage, eat your
vegetables because they are good for you, may not necessarily be the case in this situation. It's enough to add salt to an old
wound (sorry, couldn't resist.)
So stay tuned... I'll let you know how my Lenten journey plays out at the end of the next 46 days. - Melody
