FILM SOCIETY
The Bayfield Film Society is taking a break for the
month of February but will be starting a brand new
film series on March 10 with the film, "Get Low".

began as a trial experiment in 1970. It was the first Canine Section for a municipal police force in Ontario and
still exists today. Merrimen shared his experiences with this section when he spoke in front of a full house at
the Bayfield Town Hall on the afternoon of Jan. 31 as part of the Take Time 2011 series. Merrimen also invited
current members of the Canine Section to share their knowledge of the program. A highlight of the lecture
occurred when a dog handler and his canine partner gave a demonstration on how they work together when
conducting a search. (Photo by Melody Falconer -Pounder)

winter's day. Set for Feb. 20, this fundraising
event for The Bayfield Town Hall Heritage
Society will allow participants to sample
favorite soups prepared by local restaurants,
church and community groups.
The tasting, to coincide with the Family Day
long weekend, will be held from 2-4 p.m.
(please note time change) at the Bayfield
Town Hall. Tickets for this event will be
available at the door; participants can sample
four soups for $5. Those who attend can vote
for their favorite soup as part of the People's
Choice Award, in addition, the soups will be
judged by Bayfield Chef Richard Fitoussi.
There are more ways to cure cabin fever on
this day. Free Public Skating will be offered at
the Bayfield Arena from 1-3 p.m. and at the
same time out at the Sawmill Trail people can
try their hand at snowshoeing. Snowshoes
can be rented from Outside Projects at the trailhead off Old River Road and Sawmill Road for
$5 per pair. All are encouraged to try out this great Canadian sport on one of Bayfield's terrific
scenic trails and celebrate Family Day in the process.
TREWMTT TO SHARE KNOWLEDGE
OF PALLIATIVE CARE AT TAKE TIlf
Snow and cold are four-letter words to a lot of people but the congregations of the village's four
local churches have joined together to ward off the negativity that winter can bring by offering a
series of stimulating programs plus some fun social interaction.
The third year of the "Take Time in 2011" programs will run from now until Feb. 14. They are a
perfect opportunity for friends and neighbors to learn and share with one another.
The programs will be held on Mondays from 1:30-3 p.m. Each participating church will host one
event.
Even if people didn't preregister they can still attend any or all of the remaining sessions that
they would like. They can register at the door or call the church coordinator of the session they
wish to be a part of. The cost will be $2 per session.
Want to attend but don't have the transportation needed to get to the location of the
presentation? Rides can be provided, just call the coordinator of that session.
Participants at the Feb. 7 session can learn more about "Hospice and Palliative Care in Huron"
with guest speaker Gail Trewhitt. St. Andrew's United Church will play host to this session and
This film will be followed by the documentary "Force
of Nature", April 14; and movies, "The Trotsky", May
12; and "Incendies", June 16.
For just $35 you can purchase a series of tickets for
all four films. Series tickets are now on sale and can
be purchased from Jane Rowat 519 565-5838 or
Lynne Gillians 519 565-5884.
The Bayfield Film Society wants to continue to bring
the latest and greatest films to Bayfield, and with
your series purchase this goal can be achieved. The
films are shown at the Bayfield Town Hall starting at
7:30 p.m.
ARCHIVES ROOM
The Bayfield Historical Society is planning to keep
the Bayfield Archives Room open at least five
afternoons per week this coming summer by enlisting
volunteers.
In previous summers, the Archives Room has only
been open Wednesday and Saturday afternoons.
The expanded hours will accommodate the
increasing interest by both residents and visitors in
the displays, programs and publications at the
Archives. The historic building itself has become a
central tourist attraction during the summer months.
To carry out this expanded summer service, the
Historical Society will create a roster of volunteers to
staff the Archives from early June to Labour Day.
Volunteers would be expected to do the following:
respond to questions from drop -ins, sell publications
plus complete some modest archival activities.
Interested individuals, who can commit to one
afternoon per week for the summer, are asked to
contact Bill Rowat at 519 565-5838 or
wjrowat@tcc.on.ca.
FITNESS FUN
Folks can keep the winter doldrums at bay by staying
active, opportunities abound to do just that here in
the village.
Bayfield residents can join the Zumba craze as
classes have now started in the village. Zumba is a
dance fitness class that combines Latin rhythms and
easy to follow moves, creating a calorie burning
dance party suitable for all ages.
The classes will be held on Mondays from 7-8 p.m. at
the Bayfield Community Centre. The class is
currently on a two week break. The second session
of Zumba classes will move to Thursday evenings
starting Feb. 24. Cost per class is $10.
Licensed Zumba instructors, Alison De Groot and
Lorraine Dietz, will teach the class. For more

BAYHELD RIVER VALLEY TRAIL ASSOCIATION
SUNNY WINTER'S DAY BRINGS PEOPLE OUT FOR SNOWSHOE
MICE ON VARNA NATURE TRAILS
Dave Maclaren, acted as a Trail Sweep, during the hike. His job was to ensure that all participants were doing
fine as they progressed along.
The Varna Nature Trails are considered by the BRVTA membership as the most ambitious of their projects to
date.
PHOTOS BY DENNIS PAL
More than 40 Bayfield and area residents took
advantage of a sunny, Sunday, Jan. 30 to
enjoy a brisk snowshoe hike through the
woods and meadows on the new trails that
are being constructed at the Stanley Complex
on County Road 3, just west of Varna.
Afterwards, they shared a potluck lunch at the
Stanley Complex's pavilion.
The members of the Bayfield River Valley Trail
Association (BRVTA) hosted the mid-day
excursion, which was extremely well received
by participants.
"This is the second time that I've walked these
new trails," said Pam Bowers. "They are
lovely. I'm delighted that we have so much
choice close to Bayfield if we want to enjoy a
walk in the woods. There is really no excuse
for us to sit at home and complain that there's
nothing to do on a winter's day and the
exercise is good for us."
Bayfield River Valley Trail Association
president Dave Gillians, labeled this event,
"The first annual Bayfield/Varna Snowshoe
Walk and Potluck".
IMG_2144.jpg
This event gave the trail volunteers an opportunity
to show participants the results of thousands of
work party hours as they continue to improve the
trails.
He added, "This event gives the trail
volunteers an opportunity to show walkers the
results of thousands of work party hours and
to encourage new memberships to help ease
our financial burden. On the Varna Nature
Trails, four bridges have been completed this
autumn and all of the materials are in place to
build a 65 -foot bridge across a wide gully. This
is definitely our most ambitious trail
development project yet. We have a long-term

Weather conditions were perfect for the Snowshoe Hike organized by the BRVTA on Sunday. More than 40 folks
enjoyed exploring the Varna Nature Trails.

vision for the upper portion of this trail.
Someday we'd like to make it wheelchair
accessible so that everyone, no matter what
their abilities, can share this beautiful
experience."
Roger Lewington, president of the Bayfield
and Area Chamber of Commerce, and one of
the founders of the BRVTA said, "The trails
that have been developed in and around
Bayfield over the past four years are splendid
in all seasons and we are very fortunate to
have this incredible natural resource so close
to home. We are hoping that the trails will
bring visitors to the area all year round. What
a win/win situation. We get a healthier
community and create more business
opportunities and jobs."
One of Sunday's walkers, Mike Roney, called
the calming effect of a walk in the woods, "a
nature bath".
He said, "Recently in the Globe and Mail,
there was an article that discussed how the
Japanese call frequent tranquil strolls in
natural surroundings, away from civilization,
"forest bathing". When you take your time and
use all of your senses, stress seems to
evaporate."
People are invited to support the trails
financially by joining the BRVTA. Yearly
memberships are $20 per individual and $25
per family. These memberships will be
available at the event. Or cheques for
memberships can be made payable to the
Bayfield River Valley Trail Association and
mailed to P.O. Box 531 Bayfield, ON. NOM

SUBMISSIONS
So the excitement is building - only four more sleeps until my Guides and I try winter camping! We've got some fun plans, a
snowshoe hike on the Sawmill Trail and if the snow is the right kind we might try to build a small quinzee. We're also going to
do some cooking in a reflector oven the girls and leaders made at our last meeting. This is the first winter in a long time that
conditions are perfect to get out and enjoy the snow and everyone is really looking forward to it.
There will be some cozy and warm indoor activities too like sewing our own pajama bottoms, making scarves, playing games
and learning about some different European cultures. And I know there will be plenty of hot chocolate and yummy food as well.
Hope I'm not too excited to sleep as the day draws nearer! - Melody
Ideas and contributions to the Bayfield Breeze are always welcome.
Deadlines for submissions are Sundays at 4 p.m.
