Watch for the Comet.
The comet now visible in the north-
western sky is likely to become the
brightest of recent years. It is now
approaching the sun and will reach peri-
helion about August 17, coming within
31,000,600 miles cf the orb of day. It is
uow seventeen times as brilliant as when
it was first discovered at Marseilles a
few. weeks ago, and it will increase in
brightness until it comes within the in-
fluence of the strong light of the sun,
when for a time it will seem to be dim
med. It will be noticed that as the comet
approaches the sun its tail follows it; as
it recedes from the sun the tail follows
in front, that is the tail that is always
directed away from the sun. A very
few years ago a good many nervous peo-
ple would have been exercised over the
coming of such a celestial visitor, but
science has pretty well reassured even
the most nervous.
