FAREWE L SERMON.
Rev. Richard ; Hobbs Delivers an
Inspiring an Appropriate Faro -
well Addr--s to The Metho-
dist r ongregation.
On Sunday : veiling last the seating
capacity of th Methodist Church was
fully taxed, th re being large numbers
present of the different denominations
in town, when Rev. R. Hobbs, who has
just completed a four-year term as pas-
tor of the eburb, delivered his farewell
message to the congregation.
Taking ns hitext the last verse of the
15th chapter of 1st Corinthians, he de-
livered in his u ual vigorous and force-
ful style a very appropriate sermon. At
the outset he iu ormed his hearers that
he was not goi to preach the usual
farewell sermo as he was goiug but a
short distance rom their midst, but
realizing that it night be his last oppor-
tunity to speak o and look into the
faces of a people dear to his heart, he
felt keenly the el arge he delivered to
them. We cane of here give the ser -
mu in detail, bn will eudeavor to pre-
sent a few of the .oints worthy of note.
The speaker poiu';d to the Apostle Paul
as a mighty reaso .er, and the greatest
logician, philosop er and theologian the
world has ever se n. He desired to urge
upon the people ith stress and emphas-
is what Paul urg '1 upon the Corinthi-
ans, viz: Be st'•adfast. Stability is
taught in the wotI of God, and is au
important factor u contributing to suc-
cess in any spher or vocation of this
life. A double. inded man does not
succeed in busine s, in politics, or iu the
church—none ex.' 1 apart from stability.
Instability he co pared to water, and
in doing so show d the fallacy of the
common saying t .at water always finds
its own level, an that water is never
higher at its outl t than at its source.
By illustration I proved these state-
ments to bo frequently untrue. The
Mississippi Rive is much higher where
it empties than • here it rises; tides will
raise water up • great heights by the
influence of pla;•ets, winds, etc., which
goes to show, h w water is subjected,
governed and c • • trolled by laws, being
ander different • ws, but bound to yield
to the greatest fluence. So it is with
people who are nstable, and who yield
to the most potet influence operating
upon their lives. Therefore it behooved
all to be immova le, abounding in all
good works. He :Shorted his hearers to
be fervent in spir . The word fervent
is derived from 'Jervis)," meaning
to
boil. Mr. Hobbs r kes "boiling" Christ-
ians. From seeing part of a ball game
recently, the rover: nd geutleman notic-
ed how much more eager those engaged
in the contest were o get the ball into
the net than were C ristians to get souls
into the Gospel net. Hence be desired
to attain a greater de erinination in seek-
ing the lost, knowin. that his work is of
paramount importan.e, because redemp-
tion was bought at -o great a price.
Paul's argument is sed not on the
death but on the resu 4 ection of Christ,
for if Christ rose not om the dead, all
hope would prove to .e in vain. Here
the speaker made a t.uching reference
to the homes which h d been visited by
death during his pasto ate, but dispels
the sadness which the thought conveys,
by his expression of co fort to those ber-
eft, assuring them o the blessed re-
union of those who a in the Lord.
Realizing the short's ss of time here,
none can afford to be aught but stead-
fast, knowing that a enemies of the
Christian, even deat and the grave,
shall be vanquished, nd that the soldiers
of Christ shall final y triumph. The
partial and limited t iumphs of the past
'four years were refe red to, particular
notice being directe to the new church,
and the increase of issionary contribu-
tions. The past au ceases were alluded
to as but the beginng of what might be
accomplished and ssiiould be a great en-
couragement in th b future to helping
others weaker thin themselves. The
congregations whdo the most at home
invariably do the est abroad. In dos-
ing, Mr. Hobbs p. d a tribute to his suc-
cessor, Rev. Dr. t undy, and stated that
he knew of no m available that was
better suited for t e place than the com-
ing pastor. Mr. obbs closed by ex-
pressing the hope , • f meeting his people
