covering insolvencies during August
were eonspieuonsly favorable in com-
parison with the corresponding month
last year. Failures numbered only 83
against 132 a y car ago, v,thilo liabilities
were $$60,249 against $1,035,514 last
year. 'Chem were 14 defaults in manu-
facturing for $81,550, compared with
35 for $191,317 in 1901, and 63 in trading
for a$3i:1,49e, against 93 last year, in-
volving 5553.497. Numerically the de-
crease was very generally distributed,
but the improvement as to liabilitie s
was moat striking in the division embrac-
ing failures of manufacturers. This Was
partly due to the fact there were no
large disasters this year, while in 1001
two contracters suspended owing 5280,.
000. Aside from this special difference,
however, the exhibit is very much butter
hau a year ago.
