BRITISH COLONIES.
In the eighteenth century England
had in operation the system of coloni-
zation which has ever since pursued.
After the fall of Quebec in 1759 France
gave up her efforts to retain Canada,
and in 1703 Newfoundland and the
present provinces of Quebec and On-
tario were ceded by the Bourbon .King
to Great Britain. At that time Eng-
land, or, rather, the East- India Com-
pany, possessed India, and England
owned the Bermudas and Jamaica ,
but lost the Bahamas,
The loss of her American colonies by
the treaty which followed the sur-
render of Cornwallis stimulated the
activity of Great Britain toward
acquisition of territory in other parts
of the world, and the lesson of tolera-
tion imparted to her by their loss
induced her to so change her method
of governing colonial dependencies as
to knit their people loyally to the
mother country instead of alienating
them.
England re -acquired the Bahama
Islands in 1783, The first British
settlement in the Antipodes was made
in 1788, when England transported
850 convicts to Port Jackson (now Syd-
ney.) For many years Australia was
the site of penal colonies only. Gradu-
ally these were re-rnforced and finally
overwhelmed with- reputable emi-
grants from England, until now the
commonwealth of Australia dating
from January 1, 1901, and consisting
of New South Wales, Queensland,
South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria
and Western Australia, is practically
an independent government with a
population of 5,000,000 people, an
army of 33,000 men, and a navy of
twenty-one ships. New Zealand was
not colonized until 1830 and did not
join the Australian Confederation.
England seized Ceylon in 1795, Cape
Colony in 1800, the Falkland Islands
in 1771, Honduras in 1781, Trinidad in
1797.
The more recent acquisitions of
Great Britain were Ascension, in 1815;
Basutoland, in 1808 ; Bechuanaland, in
1885 ; Cypress, in 1878 ; the Falkland
Islands, in 1833 ; the Fiji Islands, in
1874 ; the Gold Coast Colony, in 1872 ;
Guiana, in 1803; Hongkong, in 1842;
Kurea Murea Islands in 1858 ; La,buan,
in 1818 ; Lagos, in I801 ; Malacca, in
1824 ; Malta, in 1814 ; Mauritus, in
1810 ; Natal, in 1813 ; New Guinea, in
1885 ; North Borneo, in 1878 ; Perim, in
1855; Port Hamilton, in 1884; Sierra
Leone, in 1802; Socotra, in 18S0; Sing-
apore, in 1810. Her latest important
acquisition was that of the South
African Republics.

Hard Year For The Old.
The year 1912 which is just closing
saw more of the aged die in Walker-
ton than any previous year in the
history of the town. In his report to
the Town Council on Monday night,
Dr, Porter, the Medical Health Officer,
sounded a sad note when he referred
to the great mortality among the old.
er people of the town that had mark.
