Crushed To Death.
Tames Jamieson, of West Luther,
was suddenly killed in the gravel pit
in the marsh at the 9th concession, on
Tuesday afternoon. With William
Day and Edward Corbett he was at
work in the pit shovelling gravel into
sleighs. A heavy overhanging ledge
looked threatening to him, but as it
defied attempts to cut it down, some
of the workers thought it safe. But
the excavation must have weakened
its hold, for while poor Jamieson %V 1.18
at work the piece broke oft- and buried
him, Corbett had gone to the top of
the pit to have another look at it and
had not returned, while Day was a
little suspicious of it, and refused to
go underneath. As quickly as possible
the unfortunate man was dug out,
but life was extinct, -[Grand Valley
Star.

Feed Scarce There.
The scarcity of feed in the country
surrounding Chatham was demon-
strated on the market there on Satur-
day, when a load of corn stalks was
disposed of by a farmer for $0, as com-
pared with $3 and $4 per load, which
has been considered a good price in
past years. In all parts of the coun-
ty it is said that feed is very scarce,
and many farmers will have a hard
job curtailing their supply to last
them till spring, when the stock can
be turned out in the pastures. It is
almost impossible to buy feed. in the
country, the farmers refusing to sell,
for the simple reason that they
hra, vexl't got it in sufficient quantities
to warrant disposing of it and run the
chance of running short themselves,
The situation is becoming acute and
before spring the stook in many barn
yards will be forced to go on short
rations. The situation appears to be
much the same in all parts of Kent
eounty. Reeve Badder of Camden re-
ports that feed is very scarce in Cam-
den, and the farmers are having trou-
ble in'Snding neighbors who are will-
ing to sell.

The North Renfrew Agricultural
Society has just elected a most te-
taaarkable man as its President.%te is
1t. IL Scott of 13ea,chburg, who has
been totally blind since childhood.
Scott is a living example of the power
of the human will and intelligence to
conquer difficulties, Be is a machin-
ery agent and horse dealer, and
travels the United States and Canada
unassisted, buying horses, which he
judges solely by the sense of touch.
Ile is said to be an expert. Mr.
Scott became blind through an ac-
cident in which a portion of a copper
rivet was driven into one eye. In-
ftamuaation ensued and he lost the
sight of both eyes,
A New Oat.
There has been developed at the
Ontario Agricultural College Farm hy
Prof. C. A. Z .vitt, an oat, which
promises to become a great acquisi-
tion. The story of develoyment of O.
A. 0,, No, 72 (the new oat spoken of)
was one of the most interesting fea-
tures in the report presented by Prof.
Zavitz at the annual convention of
the Ontario Experimental Union,
which opened at Guelph last week.
It owes its origin to to a determination
on the part of Prof. Zavitz to produce
something a little better than Si-
berian, the oat previously standing
highest in the records made in co-
operative experiments carried on
through the Union. With this pur-
pose in view, careful selection was
made of the best grains from the be t
heads of oats year after year. Ten
thousand individual grains being
handled and rejected in the procesr,
At last, in 1903, one was chosen which
seemed to meet the end desired.

the difference between the words

Owen Sound. Hotels*
The Owen Sound'.l,'imee reports that
the hotelmen In that town have ar-
ranged to observe the Local Option
Law, The Times says :e' -.n° clay fol.
lowing that of which local option was
sustained in this town, license inspect
for Matthew 0, Beckett visited every
hotel in town and intbnated to the
proprietor that sinee the byelaw had
been carried, he would make it his
businees henceforth to, in a greater
degree than ever, assure the enforce-
ment of the law, He suggested that
the hotelmen get together and ar-
range a schedule of prices such as
would enable them to carry on a
legitimate business on a paying basis.
The hotelmen appeared, to take kindly
to the suggestion, but on account of
antipathies toward one another in
several instances, nonewere eager to
take the initiative, Finally the
license inspector called a meeting of
the hotelmen himself, and in meeting
assembled they and one and all de-
clared in favor of reaching a uniform
scale of prices, euch as would warrant
them a livelihood without resorting
to the illegal sale of liquor, On Tues,
day another meeting was held and the
matter of prices was gone into fully,
with the result that a scale of prices
was arranged which will ensure satis-
factory returns to the proprietors.
The schedule was so arranged that the
various houses will charge in accord-
ance with the excellence of their ac-
commodation. In any event, the new
schedule of charges will not at all be I
exorbitant, and will assure the hotels r
ample returns without resorting to
the sale of liquor. It is indicative of
the good sense of the hotelmen and
their recognition of the futility of
fighting the inevitable.
HOW CHRONIC COUGHS
Are Being Cured by Vinol
New Haven, Conn. --"1 was troubled
with a moet persistent chronic cough
for a long time and had tried so many
remedies and prescriptions without
beueft that I was discouraged. 1 was
persuaded by my friends to try Vi-
nol. After taking the second bottle,
my ' cough left me, and I must say I
never felt better in my life. I can al-
so recommend Vinol to anyone in a
run-down condition, as the best possi-
ble remedy."
It is the combined action of the
medicinal elements of the cods' liv-
ers, aided by the blood -making and
strength -creating properties of tonic
iron which. makes Vinol so efficient in
curing chronic coughs, colds and
bronchitis --at the same time building
up the weakened, run-down system.
Try a bottle of Vinol with the un-°
derstanding that your money will be
returned if it does not help you.
