There is a considerable _difference between the violent deaths of Chicago and those in Toronto for the year that bas just passed. Chicago has had 195 murders, but not a single hanging in any of the cases. Toronto has had seven mnrders, in which one man was sentenced to be hanged, one escaped punishment altogether, *Idle the others were either infants murdered, and the murderers unknown or the charge was reduced to manslaughter. •Highwaymen and Black Hand agents were responsible for an alarming per- centage of the raurders in Chicago, and in Toronto one case was charged up against the Black Hand society. Battle Against Consumption. Realizing that prevention of tuWr. culosis can be accomplished only through education, the Anti -Tubercu- losis association has arranged for a series of lectures by acknowleged experts during the current season, 'The real battle has just begun," said Mr. James Manuel, president of the association. "A very great deal has been done to rob tuberculosis of its place •at the head of the causes of death in Canada. Sanatoria and hospitals have been established at many points. Scores of men and women are practicallyegiving up their livee to the work of combating the white plague. But much remains to be done before the banner of victory can be unfurled. The end will not be in sight till every community and every individual in the commuhity heeds the call of duty and grasps in telligently the teal meaning of that call. Ignorance is the parent of con- sutaption. The disease invades the palace as well as the hovel ; but it has its great breeding ground in the poor districts. It will never be extirpated until the people at large thoroughly understand its eaese and its pre- vention." SICKLY CHILD Made Well By Vinol.-tetters from a Grateful Mother Neve Ilavert, Conn.. -"My little glrl, eve'since her birth, was frail and sickly and nothing seemed to do her any good until we tried Your cod Ilea er and. iron tonic, Vino'. The following question Waspot up to the dairymen by ()bal. r, Whitley, who bee charge of cow -testing work for the Dominion Department of Ag- riculture, "If we agree that it takes $40 to feed a Pow for one year, then with milk at $1 nor 100 Ihs., an ainimal must give 4,000 lbs, of milk before 'be returns 'bne cent of profit, Do all yonr cows give over 4,000 Ib, of milk In a year P" That all ems do not give over 4,000 lbs, of milk was made clear by investi- gations carried on by Mr. Whitley Be examined the record of 1,000 co vvs in different counties last year and, found that 85 per cent, et these gave less than 4,000 lbe, Ip other words, 7 out of evevy 20 cows 418011g those tested could not be said to yield one dollar of profit. Mr. Whitley gave a striking cons- . parison between the record made by eleven cows in Lanark and five cows 1 in Oxford. The 11 cows in Lanark gave an average of 3,704 lbs. of milk each and 131 lbs of fat. The five cows (in the Oxford herd gave an average ! of 12,008 lbe. of milk and 400 lbs. of fat. The total yield of 11 cows in Lan- ! ark was 41,737 lbs, of milk and 1,445 lbs. of fat, and of the five cows in Okford 60,3t0 lbs. milk and 2,008 lbs. fat, In other words the five cows gave nine tons of milk and a quarter of a ton of fat more than the 11 cows in Lanark. The average profit per cow in the 11 cow herd was $3 ; the average profit per cow on the five cows in Oxford was $80. One cow in the good herd equals the net returus of 10 cows in the poor herd. "just see," said Mr, Whitley, "what this means in the way of loss of human energy. It is estimated that sixty hours will be spent in milking a cow during ten months of the year. If only 20 per cent. of the cows in Ca- nada yield 4,000 lbs. of milk or under, a year, it means that 80,000,000 hours are spent in milking profitless cows. In other words the energy lost in this way, is equal to the work done by horses in plowing 875,000 acres of land." THE EFFECTIVE LAXATIVE. TIE BEST EVER Some interesting facto 'elating to the population etatietice of the world's great cities are cited by Prof. W. 13. Bailey in the Independent :- There are at present ten cities in the world with a Population of over 1,000,- 000. Of theee, three are in the United States, Russia is the only other country' to have more than one city of this size. London leads with a population of over 7,000,000 ; but ite area is over 440,000 acres. The area of Greater New York is less than half that of London. If New York city could an- nex enough of its suburbs to make its area equal to that of London, it would at present have a population of over 0,000,000, Even without annexing any more territory, New York may, within twenty years, become the greatest city in the world. If it were possible to include suburb", as hae been done by London, it might le, come the leader within ten years, The area of Registration London, not including the outer ring, is 74,839 acres. On this territory is found a population of nearly 5,000,000, but within the past decade the popela. tion of the old city of London has actually decreased. Business he crowd- ing residences from the centre. Berlin has recently annexed suburbs with a population of nearly 1,000,000 It seems likely that when figureare available it will be discovered that Berlin has dit.pla-ced Paris as the third city in the world. The following are the population and area of the ten largest cities in the world at the latest date for which figures are available :- City .Area in Acres Population London 441,600 7,252,963 New York 209 218 4.766.883 Paris 19,280 2,763.393 Tokio . 27.989 2,180,079 Chicago 117,447 2,185.283 Vienna 39,686 2.085,888 Berlin ...... 15,698 2,070,695 St, Petersburg22 991 1.678,000 Philadelphia ..... 81.828 1,549.008 Moscow 17,654 1,359,254 The Mildmay Suicide. An item of news has been going the rounds of the press lately to the kffeet that the postmaster at Mildmay„,Ont., suieided because he bad been threaten- ed with dismissal. The postoffice department is authority for the fol- lowing statement of the facts of the cause : The 11.1ildraay postmaster was in no way threatened, and had not been communicated with by this de- partment since the advent of the pre- sent government to power. Oa the 28rd of December a complaint was received that this postmaster had opened a registered letter, which is a criminal act. The postoffice inspector was instructed to investigate the mat- ter at once, and the postmaster ad- mitted his guilt, asking for leniency and mercy. The postmaster com- mitted suicide even before the in- spector's report reached Ottawa, and consequently before the department had occasion to take action. Canada's Mortality. Sir Richard Scott declared, in. the Senate, that it should be the highest duty of every government to see that laws were made and enforced for the preservation of public health. The government of Canada had not lived up to their duty on the question. The Dominion placed the duty of caring for public health on the provinces and the provinces passed it back to the Dorainion. The census figures show - that 81,000 persons were born in anada in 1901, and of these 81,000 rsons, 21,828 died before becoming year old, and 10,019 died within e next four years. The record was a shocking one, but the census figures showed that while 81,000 persons had been born in that year, there had in the previous 25 years been 48,595 deaths of persons who did not reach the age of 25. It was a tragic thing to think that over half the people born in a single year in Canada, should die before they had passed their 2,5th year. Most of the children who died under the age of three were murdered through the ignorant ad- ministration of deadly soothing lo - tient" of various kinds. New Year Plan. To face what comes of woe or grief That what is sent is for my good, If borne with patient hardihood. To gentle be and tender too, With human fraility, and tO do Whate'er I can though small it be, To help ray brother man to free His nobler self into the right, And thus to clear his blinded sight. Never to fail in charity Nor kindly given sympathy. Little Loss /n. Transmission. Chief Engineet, Sothman, of the Hydro -Electric Power Commission, according to the BIN:tries,' News for January, recently switched over the libel" covering Western Ontario in such a way as to obtain one con, tinuous transmission circuit, of 278 miles, and found that there Was a drop of only 8 per centin the volt- age.
