F. hall on Tues- day afternoon, April llth. There was a good attendance. After the devotion- al exercises the regular business was gone over and the different superintendents gave an account of their work. The President had received several letters of greet- ing from other Unions and congratula- tions on the large membership in this union and giving her great encourage- ment in the work which is so much needed at, the present time. It is ex- pected that Mrs. McKee will visit this union in the near future and will give an address and give the superintendents instructions how to conduct their work More fully. Strong drink is bringing incalculable evils upon the nation and the world. No one who begins the course of drinking knows where it will end in his own case. Ail drunkards began their course in moderate drinking of lighter intoxi- cants and almost always in youth. The only safe way is "Don't begin." Every older person is responsible for his influence, by word and example, over the children of to -day. Four things coine not back again, the spoken word, the spent arrow, the past life and -the lost opportunity. Daniel Webster was once asked what wasthe most important thought he had ever entertained; he replied after a moment's reflection, "The most impor- tant thought I ever had was my indi- vidual responsibility to God:" A man arrested for drunkeness in London was found, when medically ex- amined, to be under the influence of tobacco, he had chewed it to such an extent that he had become intoxicated as if by alcohol.
