NOTES AND COMMENTS
Mr E. N. Ldwie, NI. P. for West
Heron had one of hie Iegislative sugges-
tions endorsed by the Commons • His
bill making any driver of a motor -oar
liable to a fine of $50 or 30 days' impris
• cement who causes an accident on the
highway, or drives on without stopping
to render assistance and giving his
name and address, was put through and
sent to the Senate.
The Oastoms collections for the first
month of the fiscal year (April) estab-
lished another new record, with a total
of $5 054,770 an increase of $1,093,092,
or over 25 per cent, over April of last
year. With the commercial activity
which is prevailing in Canada, and the
inorr•a'iug tide of immigration makipg
demands npen the domestic mannfao.
tnrer and the Importer, it is expected
that the year will close with a new
record far beyond the sixty million
mark of last year,
The easimates submitted at the vont
session of the Legislature anticipated
$650 000 receipts from succession duties
for the year The receipts for the six
menthe just closed were $$.294,595.23,
some $;0 000 short of the figure expect-
ed. The amount may of course be;
easily made up daring the second half-
year by the conning in of a few large
eaten s The estimates for this branob
of revenue are necessarily speculative.
The r+gig ipts foe. April were $62,626.86
from 82 estate,, as against $149,388,90 in
April of last year.
The wnewbera of the Senate of Cana -
de, including both sides of the House,
rendered honor to Sir Richard Cart-

Chamber and the father of the Canadian
Parliament in respeor or Iong and horn

Toronto. May 2—Union Stook Yards
—With With receipts totalling over 3,000 bead
of cattle at this market to -day, and
signs of a slower demand for this week,
it looked as though prioes have reached
the high peak, and that a break is due.
Buyers, at all events, started business
on the basis of a 20 to 25 cent break
from recent high prices, end though
trade for several hours was, very slow,
drovers in many oases refuetng to make
any concessions, still the bulk of the
business finally transacted was on the
lower level, or about 25 cents off on all

In the export trade there was prao•
tioaily nothing doing today, both buy.
ers and sellers holding off for tomor-
row's market. While Liverpool gables
report the market there firm at repent
quotations, with supplies light, Chicago
reports receipts there heavier. This
will affect the demand in the Toronto
market," and today's break in prioes
may apply to butoher and export cattle
alike. A good many cattle have been
bought in the country of late at the re-
cent high prioes, for delivery in May.
It receipts are heavy for the rest of the
week there will probably be further eas•
ing off in prices,
Total receipts were 135 loads, with
3 004 head of cattle, 93 sheep and Iambs,
18 hogs, and 195 calves.
