The heavily increased Dost of admin-
istering the liquor license laws of Ont-
ario under the present system of local
boards was emphasized by a detailed
analysis of the work of the 39 Boards
of License Commissioners, whose ap-
pointments were gazetted on Saturday.
The inroads of looai option have been
materially reducing the work of the
boards, and the fact that in many oases
the cost of administration under the
present system is greater than the re-
venue reoeived makes the likelihood of a
centralization of license authority more
probable. The omit of enforcing the appalled.

to the general prosperity. The public
debt is small compared to our national
assets, and money expended now for
public purposes should be made the sub-
ject of commendation rather than re-
buke. Men of little faith are not want-
ed in Canada; they are not useful citi-
zens, and willlbe no assistance in solving
theproblems of the present or the

more money in a year than the expendi-
ture of the Dominion of Canada. Can-

progressive Government, need not fear
the future.
A PLEA FOR BIG THINGS.
From the Brantford Expositor.
There are some men among the Op-
position at Ottawa who have no faith in
themselves, and, therefore, no faith in
the country. To those men the paltry
debt of Canada seems to be colossal,
They are so unequal to the task of Gov-
ernment, and have snoh a weak concep-
tion of Canada's greatness that they are
worst constituencies, from the Govern-
ment standpoint, were heard from first,
and Stewart Lyon, The Globe's special
correspondent, oabling on Monday even-
ing, said the result np to that time in-
dicated that when all the returns were
in, the Liberals and Labor men, who
are one, would have a majority of
thirty clear over the Conservatives and
Nationalists combined; and, since the
Nationalists are mach more likely to go
with the Liberals than with the Conser-
vatives, this means a safe viotory for the
Government.
CANADA'S RAILWAY GROWTH.
The New York Herald is much im-
pressed by the railway growth of the
Dominion, which, it declares, has now a
larger per capita mileage than any other
oonatry in the world. At the time of
Confederation Canada had but 2,278
miles, today there are about 25,000
miles. Canada has now double the
railway mileage of Italy, Australia or
Mexico, three times as much as Spain,
three quarters as much as France, two-
thirds
wothirds as much as Germany, more
than half as mobil as Russia, almost as
much as Austria and about the same as
Great Britain.
In Canada's railways there was in-
vested prior to last year $1,239,295,000,
or abont $56,095 per mile, whereas in
the United States the capitalization is
$67 396 per mile, in Great Britain $237,
437, Of course the federal and previa -
vial governments and municipalities
have liberally aided railway construe -
tion,, $181,298,412 in money and 40,000,-
000 sores of land having been given for
that purpose.
The latest published official returns
shoal that in 1908 more than 34,000,000
passengers and npwatda of 63,000,000
tons of freight were denied On the rail-
ways of Canada, entailing an outlay for
operating expenses of over $107,000,000.
Last year is expeoted to above a 20 per
cent. innrettee on these ilgureui.
Commenting on this unmistakable
evidence of Canada's progress the filer-
aid points out that there is certain to
be an enormous demand for railway
workers in the D.iminion, but it declares
we cannot get them from the United
States, as the demand there is now hi
excess of the supply.
Great as has been Canada's railway
{growth, the year upon which we have
just entered promisee 10 be the great.

Some of the cunningest little presi-

at through a microscope are now being
placed on exhibition by admiring
friends.
The original Bili Jones man is
abroad, and he rises to whoop 'er up
for his favorite, evidently under the
impression that the people are not the
least bit particular as to their presi-
dential candidates.
As it is three years now until the pa-
triotic voter will have to stay down
town nights to save the country the
average man isn't getting excited over
the nominations that are offered. Els
knows that most of the booms sprung
now will be planted tinder the daisies
and forgotten long before the critical
moment arrives. %se
