Mr. John Bentley, an old and re-
spected resident of Hest Wawanosla
died on Monday morning. Ile was in
his 17th year and had been ill for
three weeks. No farther particulars
have been ascertained.

Wedding,
On Tuesday of last week, at De
Cewsville, Miss Kate Freed was united
in marriage to Mr. Wilfred Piekell,
of Turnberry. Rev. W. J. Freed,
father of the bride, formerly of Wing -
ham, perfortned the ceremony. The
many friends of the young couple ten-
der their congratulations.
Tennis Matches.
On Friday last Wingham. Tennis
players visited Brussels and spent a
pleasant afternoon in competition
with Brussels players. The result
Was a victory for Brussels by four
events to two. The return match was
played in Wingham on Tuesday, Brus-
sels and Wingham each winning three
events.
It is reported that 22 barns were de-
stroyed by lightning in the storm of
Wednesday, July 27th, in Huron and
Wellington counties alone.

mirror in each of his shop windows.
Mr. Ritchie takes considerable -care in

The lightning on Sunday afternoon
destroyed the barn of Mr. Acheson,
on the farm adjoining Mr. Wellwood's,
West Wawanosh. The season's crop
of hay was burned.
Zetland Sunday School will hold a
lawn social on the lawn of Mr. Deyell,
Zetland, on Priday evening, August
19th; proceeds in aid of Sunday

deposited. At the conclusion of the
ceremony the Grand Warden address-
ed. the members with very appropri-
ate remarks and the Chaplain closed.

Mr. McNeill of East Wawanosh met
with a peculiar but painful accident
recently. While unloading hay, tsvo
of his fingers were caught in the clasp
of the hay fork, and he was drawn up
to the roof of the barn. The whole
weight Of his body hung by the two
fingers, which Were lacerated toe the

gone out. Dr. Towles., as Coroner,
was duly notified, but upon examina-
tion, finding that no blame could pos-
sibly be attached to anyone, and the
cause of death was purely accidental,

Winghant School Board met On
Tuesday evening ; members pres-
ent except Dr. Irwin, The following
accounts were presented and passed
for payment after examination by
Chairman and Secretary Arm-

teaming ashes, $3; J. D. Berns, coal,
etc., $112.28. The re -flooring of three
rooms in the School building was dis-
cussed, but so far the scarcity of floor-
ing lumber had prevented action; fur-
ther efforts will be made. Miss Hattie
Reid tendered her resignation as
teacher, expressing the pleasure she
had experienced in the service of the
Board ; resignation to take effect Sep-
tember 30th, The resignation was ac-
cepted. The application of Miss Lizzie
G, Wilson of Wingham for the posi-
tion to be vacated by Miss Reid was
accepted. Payment of salaries of
teachers and officers was authorized
and the Board adjourned.
