The sewing of buttons on shoes and
on garments is no longer done by hand
in modern factories. There is a ma-
chine that sews 5,300 buttons on gar-
ments in nine hours—or more than
eight expert sewers could possibly do
in the same time. This machine re-
quires no expert operator. A boy or
a girl runs it.

Lucknow.
Mr. James Hood of this village met
with a terrible accident on Wednes-
day afternoon, in Walter Wilson's
bush on the 14th concession of West
Wawanosh, a few miles south of
Lucknow. .11e was drawing out small
logs with a horse and was evidently
leading the animal when the stick of
timber became fast. The sudden stop
appears to have thrown the animal
_from its feet, and in falling it struck
against Mr. Hoodbrushing him under-
neath ite body down into the deep
snow. He was working in the bush
alone at the time, and: just how the
• accident occurred will never be known
but when he was found some time
after the accident by Isaac Mormon,
who went to the bush for a load of
wood, the horse was still lying help-
lessly on its back in the snow with the
lifeless body of Mr. Hood crushed
beneath it. The body was not dis-
figured and it is supposed that death
was caused by suffocation. It is one
of the saddest accidents that has ever
occurred in the section and the deep-
est sympathy is extended to his
sister and brother in their sad and
sudden bereavement. Mr. Hood had
resided in Lucknow nearly all his life
and was a hardworking industrious
'young man, and his sad and untimely
death has cast a gloom of sorrow over
the whole community.—[Sentinel.
