THE WINGHANI ADVANCE.
Daytona and Its Attractions.
The ittteeu City of Florida.
Written for the Advent*, By AI, W.
gory, of Detroit.
Daytona is situated upon the west
bank pf the Halifax Rtver at its
fairest expanse and midway between
Ito source at Bulow Bay and its outlet
fit Mosgaito Iulet. It is in latitude 29,
seventy-four miles from St. Augustine
and one mile from the Atlantio Ocean,
and ie acknowledged to be without a.
rival for beauty among the villages of
the South, Its site is upon what is
known as high hammock land that was
crowned by nature with a most royal er, w,hioh says that Wm. Smith, un
growth of majestic forest trees, and Ontario Courty farmer, lately sold four
among these trees is the town to -day,
with its beautiful cottages and well-
graded walks and stroets. The result is
that all along the wide avenues that
intersect the town are lordly live and
water pike Sud hickories, many of them
draped with graceful festoons of the
gray Spnniyh moss, that o'I:'trarch the
street and walks, And among
those are
interspersed trill tropical palmettos,
glossy -leaved maguolias, fragrant bays
and coral.berried holly, and many other
varieties, while in many planes the wild
grape, the trumpet vino and the am-
pelopsis climb and oliug among the
branches forming shady bowers and
adding grace and beauty.
rhe town lies parallel with the Hali-
fax River, and extends for nearly two
miles along the shore. This river is the
delight of the angler and the yachtsman
and forms one of the town's greatest
attractions.
The main avenues that run parallel
with or intersect the river are all 100
feet wide, except Beach street, which 18
about 65 feet, but has a half mile of
open, beautiful water abntting upon
its eastern side, where the salt waves
ebb and flow, and along and across
which comes the cooliug, invigorating
and health -giving breezes from off the
wide Atlantio, which temper and render
the Halifax climate one of the most per-
fect in the world. Daytona has many
miles of well -graded, marled and shell-
ed roads and streets, rendering it the
Wheolman's Paradise and added to
these, but a mile away, aro thirty
utiles of smooth, hard beach, that
affords an unrivalled course for long-
distance cycling and driving or automo-
bile racing. No town of equal size,
North or South, numbers so many
wheelmen, and cycling is a favorite
pastime with the tourists summer and
winter.
The beautif»I cottages that have been
erected during the. past years and are
being built are rendering Daytona as.
famous for its flue homes as ler its
beautiful river, trees and avenues, and
they aro adding yearly to its attractions.
Not the least of these attractions to
those securing homes in the south, and
ranking second only to healthfulness
and perfection of climate, is the fact
that its population is chiefly composed
of cultivated and intelligent people,
accustomed to the refinements of home
and social life. Added to these features
ore good churches, good public and
private schools, novelty works, hot and
cold baths, eto., and eveiything else can
be procured that is necessary to make
life comfortable.
People who have tried Northern and
Western summer resorts declare that
there are none so perfect in comfort
as Daytona Beach,
The beach has now a universal re-
putation as the greatest automobile race
course in the world. The Daytona -Or-
mond Beach is hard as macadam, and
an ideal stretch of thirty or more miles
witlioitt a break makes it the natural
racing ground of Amerioa. It is no
uncommon sight to see sail -rigged
bicycles spending with the velocity of
the wind before a stiff breeze along the
smooth beach, thus affording the most
exhilarating sport known to man. Be-
sides these, miles of hard -shelled, palm -
fringed boulevards bring the lovers of
the wheel and vehicles into direct touch
with the mainland over the broad
bridges which span the splendid Halifax
River.
The beach from the sandy bluffs to
the lowest point at ebbtide measures
about 500 feet, and the average depth of
the surf measures about two feet. A
continuous gentle swell rolls in from the
oceau from one to two feet in depth
under normal conditions,. making the
beach an attractive and absolutely safe
place for surf-hathing, Here the infant
as well as the grey-haired veteran of

-The truth is, flays the Breeders' Ga-
zette, that the silo is a fine aid to the
feeder of beef cattle, but is not the
whole thing. Silage makes a lot of ex-
cellent filling; it aids digestion, keeps
the steer in good health, helps him to
digest more concentrated food, puts the
juice in his body, but it must have solid
dry food added to make fat profitable,

—The Town Conuoil of Mitchell have
on their hands a problem in the shape
of a fancily from Switzerland, who pas-
sed through here on the Grand Truuk..
They were bound for Michel, B.O„ but
were sent to Mitchell by some one's
mistake. They can speak French only.
The party, which sailed from Havre,
France, a man, a woman and five
children. They arebeing cared for
by the citizens of Mitchell, who are not
allowing them to spend their small

—Mr. J. Ritohie, 20th Greenock, had
a life and death tussle with his bull on
Sunday afternoon. The animal knock-
ed him down, ferociously attempting to
trample and gore him to death. Mr.
Ritchie managed to get hold of the ring
in the bull's nose, and huug on with a
good tight grip, thus saving himself
from serious injury, until finally losing
his hold ou the ring the bull got his
horns under his victim's body and gave
him a lift in the air Mr. Ritchie landed
on top of a wire fence and tumbled
over on the other side completely 'ex-
hausted, The bull tried to break the
wires and get through, but Mr. Ritchie
kept moving along the fence and foiled
the brute's plans. Some of the neigh-
bors came along and pitohforked the
bull into the barn, and now he has been
sold for beef.—[Paisley Advocate.
—0. W. Currie, formerly of Parkhill
with two companions, Hugh Clark and
McCormick Boyes, had out down a
huge oak tree at Boligee, Ala., and
when knocking off the last score of the
butt end of the timber they noticed a
two-inch auger hole with a plug insert-
ed. The auger hole must have been
made many years ago, as the tree had
grown so that the plug was covered to
the depth of two inches. On taking out
the plug they found a roll of paper
wrapped up in a cloth. The paper
proved to be the last will and testament
of one Reuben Jones, conveying a large
tract of laud. The natives inform the
finders that they are in luck, as there
was a reward of $10,000 for finding or
presenting the will. They say Jones
was killed in the Southern war.
