Mather is doing a good busi- ness in the furniture line. We hear that he is to furnish a house near London,. -, -Miss Kate Hazelwood has returned to her home in the village, after spend- ing some months in Toronto, where she has been studying music, in con- nection with the Conservatory. The Dominion Day sports commit- tee are working hard at present, ar- ranging for some very special attrac- ti time. . It is e ex ect d that a balloon ascension will be one feature of the program. Jamestown, Len. Ruttan spent Sunday with his parents near Lakelet, Russel and Ed. King visited their aunt, Mrs. B. King, last Sunday. John Pollock of Listowel, visited his brother, A. Pollock, on Tuesday of last week. Mr. Ainley of 1 y Brussels, preached in the hall on Sunday night. Rev. Mr. West of Bluevale, will take charge next Sunday. Andrew Pollock is still confined to the house. Malaria fever is the trouble the doctor says. We trust that he will soon be around again. The farmers are having their pat- ience pretty well tried with the weath- er this spring. It is now a late spring no matter how soon the weather set- tles. The Women's Institute of this place held their annual meeting in the hall on Monday of this week. For the short time they have been formed, they are getting along well. A man from, Elora has been in this vicinity during the past week, buying a load of stock cattle which he took away on Monday, On" Saturday_ last Wm. Kennedy's barn was burned to the ground, The cause is unknown, but it is thought matches had something to do with it, On Monday last, while Mrs. Geo. Cottle was driving down Olow's side - road, her horse took fright at some- thing, and turning short around, threw Mrs, Cottle out and -ran back to Whitechurch, There was no damage done, During the thunderstorm on Thurs- day last, Mr, Dan, McIntosh, bis two sons and one daughter, were together out in the- el fi dft team of horses. w h a An electric bolt struck so close that it knocked all four people senseless and frightened the team which ran away, They all soon recovered consciousness and were not much the worse for their exciting experience. c g ape ante. While driving out from Wingham a few days ago, your correspondent was struck by the beauty of the scene along the bank of the river Maitland. The artistic blending of the heaps of coal ashes, tannery refuse, tanner's clippings and old tin cans, simply baf- fles des ri ti n Then the high and unprotected bank, along which the roadway is built, lends a bit of danger which will set your nerves tingling, especially if a C. P. R, locomotive on the other side0 f the street blows off steam about the time your horse is ,opposite it, and your horse jumps over on to the aforesaid artistic refuse heaps. We hope this beauty spot will be immortalized on picture post cards, for the benefit of future generations. Salem. We are sorry to report that Mrs. 3. A., attended the induction service of Rev, Mr, Mc- Lean at Ripley on Tuesday, The annual tneeting of the Women's Institute will be held at the residence of Mrs, Henry Diment on Thursday afternoon of this week ; a good pro- gram is expected. The Ladies Aid of Knox Church have arranged with the Young Men's Christian Association members of Wingham to have them give their popular play "Handy Andy" in the. Foresters' hall, on Friday evening, 14th inet, Grey. Mr. George McAllister of Guelph, spent Sunday with relatives here: Miss Martha Johnston has gone to Brussels to learn dressmaking with Miss Colvin. Mr. Jahn Pearson spent Sunday with his uncle, A. Il. Musgrove, M, P. P,, Wingham. Mr. Thos. Voddenhas a moved bis family to Ethel, where he has pur- chased the farm adjoining the village, and belonging to Noble Milne, Mr, Harvey Elliott, who has been in the hospital at Toronto, came home on Saturday evening. We are glad to state that he is much improved. The Sabbath School held in the boundary school house, was re -opened last Sunday with an attendance of forty. Mr. John McLennan is the Sup- erintendent. At a meeting of the committee it was decided to hold the annual Sun- day School circuit convention at Ethel on the 24th. A Iist of topics was ar- ranged and with special music a good time is being lookeet forward to. In the evening a song service will be led by the united choir, and an address will also be given. Armstrong & Co. shipped a ear load of hogs on Tuesday of this week, at $7.40 per cwt, Mrs. Tucker, of Derham, visited her mother, Mrs, Brydges, 3rd line of Morris, last week, John Owens left for bis home at Theesalon last Friday, after spending a couple of weeks with relatives here, Miss IL Stella Polley, of City Hos- pital, Geneva, N. Y., spent a few days this week with her sister, Mrs. (Rev.) Rivers. Robt. Campbell, G. T. R. assistant agent of Clinton, Sundayed at the home of his parents,MMr. and Mrs, Jno. Campbell. John L. Stewart and his mother at - tousled de the funerals of two brothers of the latter, Messrs, McKenzie, of Past Oxford, last week. Mrs. T. Il. Miller of Vancouver, B. C. is visiting .her brother, Mr. W. Wray,and h Er sister, t ,Mrs. Daley, and other elatives in this vicinity. , Chas. McClelland shipped a car load of cattle to Toronto last week, and a. car load on Tuesday this week, and Robt. Armstrong shipped a car load on Monday ; they report good markets. At a meeting of the Belgrave Meth- odist Quarterly Board, Harry Hopper was appointed to attend the Confer- ence at London, and Richard Irwin to attend the District Meeting this week at Gorrie. M The electric storm last week did con- siderable damage in East Wawanosb. Three or four barns were struck by lightning, but none of them were set on fire. Among them' were Wm. Johnston's and Cyrus Scott's, Belmore. Bella McLeod has been on the sick list for a few days. Geo. Finlater of Morden, Man., is staying with his father. Mrs, John Darling and daughter, Bertha, have been quite i11 but are on the mend. Thos. Inglis, Carrick, intends hav- ing the woodwork on the outside of his house painted this summer. Alex. Finlater, who went .to Fergus for medical treatment, returned home. He is still under Dr. Wilson's care, Mr, Miller, blacksmith, is improving his property by planting out a num- ber of trees and otherwise fixing up. May more follow suit. John Baker had a weak spell on Saturday evening at the barber shop, and had to be conveyed home. He was much better on Monday. MARRIED.— On Wednesday, April 21st, at the manse, Belmore, by Rev. J. Radford, Elsie Frances Teskey of Carrick, to David Omar Stokes of Turnberry. Donnybrook. Little Ida Thompson is slowly im- proving. Mr. Wm. Nixon is also able to be around again. We are glad to report that Miss Martha Wallace is improving, and is able to be up. Mrs. D. Lockhart has been staying with her mother for a few days help- ing to nurse her little sister. Quarterly Sacramental service was held here Sunday morning. There was not as large a congregation as. usual, but we had an inspiring and helpful service. We were sorry to see—that a mis- take had been made in last week's issue, an efficient teacher in the per- son of Mrs. Thos. Bamford, being left out of the staff of Sunday School teachers. The Laymen's Missionary meetings which were held in Lucknow last week were well attended. Gillies Haines attended his cousin's wedding at St, Marys a week ago ; he reports having' a good time.
