The Opposition could not adopt a more effective means of driv- ing these people back to their party allegiance than by creating the im- pression that a vote against the Gov- ernment means a vote for high tariff. -Recent estimates of the world's gold production in modern times place the United States first, with a total output of $2,800,854,000. Next in line, and only one-third of a billion less, stands Australia, in which cotrutry gold was not discovered until 1850. Russia, including Siberia, ranks third, with an output of $1,484,579,000. In the year 1005, the world's gold output of $370,000,000 surpassed all previous records, showing an increase of nearly $30,000,000, The Mint Director of the United States estimates that during the next twenty years the world's gold production will average $400,000,000 per annum, and, that the gold supply is practically inexhaustible. «« --Dr. Pyne, Minister of Education, was interviewed recently by a delega- tion of booksellers, who were there, as they explained, to anticipate, and, if possible, prevent, the contemplated intention of the Administration with regard to the Governmental distribu- tion of text -books, While not clearly foreshadowing the policy which he and his colleagues may see fit to adopt, Dr, Pyne said that they would un- doubtedly do that which might be ex- pected to produce the largest good to the greatest number. He said that "something must be done to provide cheaper books for the people of On- tario." If, at the same time, an im- provement can be made in the books, and in the quality of paper, the people will appreciate the change. « « -In connection with the proposal of the Dominion Government to estab- lish a parcel post to compete with the express service of this country, it will be interesting to learn what is being done in Great Britain along this same line. In that country the Post -office carries parcels up to eleven pounds in weight, with a limitation of three feet six inches in length. Fruit, dairy and poultry produce are carried tinder these regulations. It is provided that in the case of soft fruit, suet" as straw- berries, the fruit must be packed so that the juice cannot get through, and the parcel must be labeled "fruit, with care." Eggs are to be narked as eggs, with the word "fragile" added. Meat and fish must be ntat'ked "perishable." If a parcel is undelivered, and the name of the sender is placed (neon it, a printed notice is sent to him, and he. has his choice of having it returned or re -directed somewhere else. On par• eels not exoeeding one pound, the rate is three ponce, and on parcels ten to eleven pounds, eleven pence, * -Ona of the most singular parka. mentary returns ever presented to the House was brought down its connec- tion with the North Atlantic Trading Company, Sines Marsh, 1000, the Albemarle A. As a successful Itnrnigration Agency the Salvation Army has come into great prominence, and during the past four years about twenty thousand people have been directed to this country through the agency of this world-wide organization. Sixty per cent. of these have been placed in On- tario, 30 per cent. in the Northwest, and the remainder in Quebec and the Maritime Provinces, Thirteen thousand persons came to Canada under the auspices of the Array last year, and were selected from a possible one hundred thousand applicants. These figures convince us of the fact that great discretion is used in the selection. During the coming season, 1907, it is estimated that fully 25,000 por•sons will avail themselves of the Army's Emigration facilities, and book passages to Cana- da.
